  • just kinda reminds me of a person I know who, upon return (balikbayan) to Manila chose to queue at the "Tourists" in the immigration arrivals area at the NAIA instead of the "Balikbayan" queue saying " Ay hindi na ako "balikbayan" kundi tourist na ako ngayon (US passport holder na kasi siya). Mind you, matigas ang dilang bisaya siya.

'yung mga pinoy na "deprived" sa 'pinas ang usually nakaka-develop ng mga "akala mo na kung sino" attitude, hindi na makasalita ng tagalog as if foreign language na sa kanila 'yon. once kasi nakarating sila ng US, they can afford to buy luxuries lalo na kapag work to death sila (2nd or third job or OT ng OT...kaching!) kaya they become mahangin and "feeling rich". there's nothing wrong with people working hard, having countless jobs and buying what they want. they deserve it and it's nobody's business to meddle. pero kung ang point eh para may pambili lang ng iyayabang and rubbing it in na "i'm rich!" or "can afford na ako!", dun ako naiinis. they're so pretentious! marami akong kilala na mga pinoy na ganyan sa US...asus ginoo! :hopeless:
  • Just want to share...

Most of my relatives live in the States. Almost everyone's ok and managed to stay down-to-earth EXCEPT for some cousins of mine who were actually born there. They look more Filipino than I am (i'm mestiza while they're pure filipino) but criticize Filipinos and the Philippines more than anyone i know! A few months ago, i visited them in NY and SF and heard the following comments:

"oh, if you want to be famous, just go to the Philippines. they adore balikbayans and turn them into actors/singers, etc." (in a way, it's true but it's still a stereotype. and please, wala naman masyadong mga fans yan dito eh. they're not really making it big here. hello troy, kc?)

"if you go to the Philippines, wear ratty clothes so they won't kidnap you and everyone dresses funny anyway" HELLO! REALITY CHECK: HELLO!!! The next time they visit (they've been here once - a loong time ago pa), i'll take her to greenbelt or to any gimmick places so she'll know that we have more fashion sense than they do!

There are some balikbayans naman who really try hard to speak w/ an American accent. NAKAKATAWA. I also noticed that my brothers and I are more grammatically correct than my cousins who were born there! And don't get me started w/ spelling!

And please, wag ipagyabang ang mga clothes from Old Navy and Gap ha! It's like showing off your Marks and Spencer stuff which you got from London!
  • Just give them a warm welcome but don't overdo it. I just noticed why some we tend to pamper balikbayans much.

since i agree with what heymikey said, no point in answering your questions and repeating what was already said.

although i have yet to encounter this kind of balikbayan, one that would totally annoy me would be someone who would compare how life is abroad and here. let's face it, life abroad is comparably better but heck, no need to keep on repeating over and over again how bad the traffic is, how our roads are full of potholes, how our goverment is so corrupt, yadda yadda yadda. we already *know* that. no need to rub it in.

another trait that would irk me would be for a balikbayan to speak in english constantly and suddenly develop filipino language amnesia. let's face it, some pinoy balikbayan's are like this. they think that just because they know how to speak in english they're so much better than you are. my relatives in the US have lived there for over 3 decades and still speak filipino and kapampangan fluently. i don't see how a balikbayan who has only been in the US for a year can suddenly forget his mother tongue.

lastly, balikbayan's who'd flaunt their material wealth, like those who'd cover themselves from head to foot with designer items. puhleease.

i'm gonna be frank here and try to dispel some notions that some seem to have here about "balikbayans". i'm one of five kids with the oldest being born in the philippines and the rest of us born here in the US. the two oldest have visited there and this was there impression. mind you i'm stating these salary figures not to show off but for reference purposes only. my brother who is a regional manager for SBC, a big telecommunications company, makes around $200,000.00 a year which by going with a 50 peso exchange rate equals 10 million pesos a year and he compared himself to my uncle who works in tarlac for a government agency who makes around 500,000 pesos believes that my uncle lives a much more comfortable and stress free life. my uncle has a maid which doesn't seem to be a big deal in the philippines but only the very rich here would have. my uncle knows all his neighbors and are friendly with all of them. you don't have that sort of community here. life here is compartmentalized. we're lucky if we know more than a few of our neighbors and the few that i do know, i would rather forget. i only wish that i knew how to speak tagalog. i plan on visiting there soon and am kind of wary of speaking english in public for the exact same reasons that some seem to have here and that is one of being pretentious. please realize that there are filipinos that only know how to speak english but don't automatically assume that we think we are better than you because most of us don't. yeah sure we earn the almighty dollar *i'm being sarcastic here because realistically it's no big deal* but BELIEVE me when i say that it does not automatically equate to happiness. the balikbayans that do show off their "wealth" there in the philippines assuredly do the same here in the states. it seems to be a trait here for some filipino families to show off their flashy cars, houses, and clothes when in reality it makes them look stupid. so don't take offense when they do show their wealth to you because i'm almost sure that they behave that way here. that behavior is not exclusive to you guys. as far as balikbayans showing off old navy and gap clothes as commented here by someone else, i have nothing against those companies but here they are no big deal. i have friends that buy their stuff from thrift shops (used clothing stores) who are more stylish than alot of these clones that come out of (insert name brand store here) we're not all bad and we don't all think that we are better than you. give us a chance first and reserve your impressions after you really get to know a balikbayan.
Laki naman dito and dito naniniraan.

  • Be nice peeps, balikbayan folks are people too!

    :)
  • gotcha2gotcha2 PEx Influencer ⭐⭐⭐
^^ wag mo namang lahatin ang mga balikbayan. Hindi lahat ha.

When I go home sa Pinas, daig pa ako sa mga sumalubong sa akin. Akala mo sila ang taga ibang bansa. Ako naka shorts lang at tsenelas and ordinary T-shirts, sila head to toe akala mo kararating lang nila from abroad.

Kaya nga may taga bantay eh.

i'm just wondering exactly what you mean by that? i plan on visiting the philippines the first time in june and was wondering what exactly causes you to spot "them"?
  • hey. just want to apologise for my post above. i must've been sniffing something when i posted that. ha ha ha. didn't mean to say all balikbayans are like that. i'm sure there are nice ones too.

kameron4! i especially don't want to scare you away since i read that you're coming here in june. don't worry about speaking in english; the balikbayans i was ranting about are those who grew up in the phils then suddenly develop filipino-language amnesia after a few months in the us. but since you grew up there (and i assume your family doesn't use filipino to converse with one another) then it's okay if you speak in straight english, twang and all. :) just don't get unnerved if people look at you funny. they'll realize soon enough that you're a balikbayan.

usually the color of their hair - lotsa highlights, colored blond, etc. the girls are usually wear revealing clothes, even the, uhm, "heavier" ones.

me, i'm bad at spotting balikbayans until they start speaking. and in fairness to the ones i've seen, they aren't flashy at all. i even dress better than they do. ha ha ha. keeding.

no hard feelings. :kyle: believe me, the balikbayans that do show off there most certainly do the same thing here. as if. it's funny because my parents go home every year but every time i see the photos or video they've taken of their visit, my mom is usually the one that is dressed the worst. all of my relatives are usually dressed to the nines while my mom looks like a roadside vendor.
  • yeah you really can't generalize. i've met balikbayans that aren't so bad, nakakatuwa pa nga ung twang nila when speaking eh. what ticks me off is the fact that *some* balikbayans (especially those who are stepping foot here for the first time) expect everyone to speak english the way they do (yeah i've seen some who are like this) parang "hello, wala ka na sa states. this isn't your turf!" so i guess it depends on the person. some may think they are better than the others, just because they speak twang english, but it's still nice to know that not all balikbayans think that way. :)
  • I don't understand why they just can't be treated like any tourist from other nations. After all, that's what they are.

another way to spot them is through the balikbayan boxes! hehe, we had to use 2 vans to fetch my balikbayan relatives not because they were too many (in fact, two adults and two kids lang nga sila eh, hehe) but because they brought along 6 big boxes filled with pasalubong. :D
