  • i dont think u can define catholicsm in a sentence. It involves 2000 years of history, tradition, and culture. It involves not only spiritual but also political, social, cultural, artistic history. To ask a concise definition of Catholicism is too broad for anyone to answer. to answer ur question, its one of the major religions out there. is the answer satisfactorY? hehe

i'd beg to differ, freakster. the word "catholic" can be defined, quite simply.

its' NOT only A RELIGION with such and such years of history and what-not behind it.

its a word, and therefore, it can be defined in a few words too. it is a 14th century word, with versions from Greek to Middle French to Late Latin.

it is a word first and foremost, with a particular, and concise meaning, and that meaning is, quite simply- "universal"- comprehensive, it applies to all. far removed from the context of the Roman Catholic faith, this pretty much holds constant.

Yep, it means universal and preceding it with Roman makes it less than universal. That's why learned Catholics simply refer to their brand of Christianity as merely Catholic and not Roman Catholic.
  • but what does it mean to be universal? Universality as ur definition suggests does not capture the essence of catholicism. Although it is the correct definition; it lacks the zest of what catholicism is to catholics.

Catholics are known only as Catholics since the time of the great schism (split between Catholics and Orthodox). In Apostles' Creed, it says, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints..... and not ...the Holy Roman Catholic Church..... The term Roman was coined only by the Protestants the same way that the term Protestant was also coined by the Catholics to these small groups that split from them.

i was defining the word per se, in the context of being a word. it was not an attempt to " capture the essence" of Catholicism.

i was defining "catholic" NOT "Catholic.";)

parang "god" saka "God." gets? :)

    Let's put it this way...

ROMAN CATHOLIC= the so-called religion started out by the vatican way before St. Inatius Loyola was born. It was created to implicitly brainwash people into thinking that all its doctrines and moral are good.
