Psychology of the PEX

Anyone notice when you get into a heated debate on the PEX, your emotions can swing from exultation and giddiness [at a 'killer' post you put up] to intense anger or disgust at something you read and 'know' or think is absolute BS? [esp.politically related stuff].

I mean arent you amazed that faceless, total strangers you've never seen or met can have such an effect on you at times? I've participated in other forums but havent seen this to the degree Ive seen it on the PEX.

Then we seem to go through a 'PEX fatigue' ... we withdraw from any 'provocatory' threads and play it safe for a few weeks.. until we either get into that confrontational itch again or see something we consider absolute drivel that piques us into a devilish response.

Havent you noticed that moving from different sections/forums within the PEX is like moving to a new town with different people and attitudes? 'Local and Foreign issues' is like a wild-west town with mean gunslingers lurking around. 'Technology Today' is like a nice 'Disneyworld' type of town with smiling Mickey Mouses all around ready to help with any inquiry you may have. Realm of Thought? I guess this is a melting pot of all sorts. Any thoughts?

    i've been around....and one thing i've noticed is that in ROT....nobody seems to win. And I kinda like that because different ideas come out from nowhere to disprove another.
  • actually, its quite nice, since you get to see how far your arguments will stand against all the others' :D

    PEx, like every other high traffic forum in the net is a microcosm of the real world. You get nice people, shrewed people, sheeps, wolves, *****$es, know-it-alls, wannabes, etc. - the whole gamut of personalities in short, if not representative of the real world in terms of proportion.

    Hehehe.

    Well if half the arguments here really happened in real life, imagine the number of brawls and fisticuffs that would ensue. :rolleyes:

    If PEx is a microcosm of the real world, what can you say about the popularity of Small Talk, Relationships, etc?

    ::wiggles eyebrows::

    Urm what I meant as microcosm of the real world is in terms of the types of people here, not in terms of how they act. Of course there is the big difference of anonymity here in PEx which allows folks to hide behind nicknames (and God knows how many alternicks) so they can be more argumentative and combative than they really are. Remove the priviledge to be anonymous and we'll see a whole lot more better behaved people here.

    Well now, those are precisely the topics that most people want to talk about even in real life no? :D

    Nice un, Yuri_Prime. :D

    I think your quote is misapplied. If you interpreted it as meaning finding fault with people, as I'm sure the good Admiral meant, then you completely misinterpreted my post. The basic intent of my post was to dwell on the vagaries of human nature, how people react when confronted with opposing ideas, values and interpretations of the many issues discussed in an open forum, and how their temperaments seem to vary thru the various sub-forums [hence the title 'Psychology of the Pex]. No one was singled out, no one insulted [unless you took my reference to 'mean gunslingers' personally or negatively rather than the light-hearted metaphorical context it was intended].

    However, its hard not to see the appearance of intent on your part to offend me by infering that I belong to the 'small minds' referred to in the Admirals quote. Well, whatever... if you took pleasure out of that slick quote, at least it wasnt wasted.

    No! That one was not meant to offend you. Why should I offend you?

    But that quote reflects diversity of people in this board.

    Thanks for your clarification.. but you can see the ease in how it can be misconstrued.
