'Weakest Link' contestant dies of weak heart
June 20, 2002 Posted: 4:37 PM HKT (0837 GMT)
MANILA, Philippines -- A contestant on the Philippine version of the popular TV game show "The Weakest Link" suffered a heart attack and died moments before appearing on the show, the Philippine Star daily reported on Tuesday.
Gary Gonzaga, a 33-year old real estate broker, had breathing difficulties and complained of chest problems before the start of the show's taping.
A paramedic rescue unit rushed Gonzaga to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead 45 minutes later.
The cause of the death has yet to be determined but initial reports reveal Gonzaga succumbed due to heart failure, after being overwhelmed by pre-show nerves the report said.
Gonzaga's widow Terry, told the Philippine Star that her husband had no history of heart disease, but said he was very excited about making it into the show.
Reports said the show's producer in the Philippines, Viva-TV, covered Gonzaga's medical expenses.
"The Weakest Link" is a ruthless and psychological game show that has taken the world by storm.
The game tests eight contestants against each other in a trivia contest.
At the end of each round, one player is subjected to humiliating remarks by the show's caustic host after being eliminated by team mates as the 'weakest link.'
