  • yepp, it'll be on June 7 - 23, there would be P20 entrance fee tho'...still cheap :D go to www.alliance.ph for more info
  • thanks for the info!
    :)
how about the sked of screening and film titles?
  • hey, for anybody who might be interested. June 6 is the start of film screening. List of films is not yet available.
  • wow! this is fantastic news for cineastes! the one i am eagerly awaiting is 8 FEMMES as directed by francois ozon. it features a veritable carnival of france's leading ladies of screen: isabelle huppert, catherine deneuve, emmanuelle beart, et al.

in the recent cinemanila, the one film that pulled at my emotional heartstrings was ozon's UNDER THE SAND with the fantastic charlotte rampling. his authentic dissection of grief and coming to terms with death was so accurate (for me at least who experienced similarly) and real for me, i must have wept copiously in the darkened theater.

and of course, AMELIE OF MONTMARTE and THE WIDOW OF ST. PIERRE are must-sees for cinephiles. i am not too keen watching AMELIE as a local distributor already snagged the deal to release the said film in manila soon.
  • I think Review Night of Cinema One is doing a review of the opening film - Amelie, tomorrow. Check it out.
  • I checked the site. Wala nga! My friend was invited to the opening of French Spring. I think they showed Amelie there. But for the next couple of days and from the schedule i saw at alliance, i don't think they'll be showing it again. :(

    Sana ipalabas!!!

I enjoyed Le Zebre most. Its a romantic comedy-tragedy. Based on the Shangrila sked. the last showing was last sunday. i hope it will be shown again. many will enjoy it.

I also look forwrd to 8 FEMMES and Le Fabuleux Destine de Amelie populai or something........

Amelie yon. Kaso censored yung print nila.
  • dalawa na napanuod ko, yung No Scandal and The Bait. medyo constipated yung No Scandal, so i didn't like it that much, although my boyfriend did, which made me get into an argument with him, dahil sabi ko, pretentious sha. but that's beside the point (sorry, just letting off some steam). The Bait was ok, but not brilliant. mas gusto ko yung Requiem for a Dream, which had striking parallelisms.

a friend told me that a juliette binoche film replaced the slot Amelie was supposed to have yesterday (sunday). sayang, i adore juliette binoche pa naman. may nakapanuod ba sa inyo? can anyone tell me the film's title? will it be shown again? :wondering:

basta kung sinoman kayo, see you later mamaya. shall be trooping there after work. i hope the film's i catch are better this time.

    :turncat:
  • I was only able to watch three films: LE ZEBRE, METISSE, and LE VEUVE DE ST. PIERRE.

I like METISSE a lot because of its unique premise. Its like THE WEDDING BANQUET minus the homosexual angle. Its very clever and very me-to-you. A French colleague at the university told me that it caused quite a stir when it was released in France because of the frenetic camera work and the topic which veers dangerously towards what Le Pen was most against -- multiculturalism. The film even took potshots at pop culture figures like Le Pen, Spike Lee, Malcolm X. Felix, the character played by the film's director looked like a cross between Elvis Costello and Steven Soderbergh while Jamal looked like the GUESS WHOS' COMING TO DINNER-era Sidney Poitier. Although the film resolved the story conventionally, the story-telling was anything but. There were so many funny parts that were probably not intended to be.

LE ZEBRE was admittedly funnier in terms of dialogue and the hyper performances of the two leads (whose names I forget but who resembles American actor Anthony La Paglia and Bulgarian mezzo soprano Olga Borodina). The fear of the dissolution of a marriage was never tackled so hilariously since Glenda Jackson's A TOUCH OF CLASS and Billy Crystal's FORGET PARIS. The main actor's very flexible face was able to convey the hilarity, pathos and ultimate longing he felt for his wife. The film reminds me of a lot of other films, notably A PORNOGRAPHIC AFFAIR and UNDER THE SAND, but LE ZEBRE had several sight gags that sometimes gag. The all-too ambiguous ending may waylay viewers a bit at first but will make everyone realize in the end how he wouldn't want to be seen by his family as anything but vibrant.

But THE WIDOW OF ST. PIERRE has a near-operatic grandeur that comes from movies with the right intentions and all heart. The premise is very intriguing: a criminal was sentenced to guillotine but Newfoundland, Canada doesn't have one, nor an executioner. After requesting one from France, the latter sent one from Martinique. But the town grew to accept the criminal due to the grace and kindness of the soldier's wife (Binoche). So, will the people accept that their society's criminal-turned beloved member be executed? No spoilers for me here, but let me comment on the heartbreaking performances of Daniel Auteoil and Juliette Binoche. They were incredibly good at showing the conflicting emotions of two people who grew to love the criminal in their midst. Auteoil in particular was really good (as good as in LES VOLEURS) and his willowy and dark looks were so inch-perfect you think he is really the captain in the military detachment. Binoche's quiet moments were also the loudest in terms of emotional impacts. Very highly recommended. The best so far for me (probably the best in the festival?).

I seem to notice that Juliette Binoche gives very convincing and natural performances in non-English films (notably in this film, and also in CODE INCONNU and BLEU) than in English-language films. Although I like her work in THE ENGLISH PATIENT, DAMAGE and CHOCOLAT, for me, her performances sometimes appear (too) cool and calculated.

Eagerly awaiting MARTHA, MARTHA and 8 FEMMES.
  • i was also hoping to catch amelie last sunday, but the juliet binoche film, the widow of st. pierre was okay.

    sayang, i missed le zebre.

i also liked metisse, cafe au lait. i didn't know that the guy who played felix was actually the director? the film reminded me of not of the wedding banquet, but splendour by gregg araki. probly because of the threesome angle. but i liked this one better than splendour. i get the feeling that neither of the two guys are actually the father of the baby. must be the guy from that other vacation.

i'm also looking forward to 8 femmes. virginie ledoyen!
  • According to the sched i saw, Amelie won't be shown anymore :( but a friend told me yesterday that Amelie Poulain was shown "twice" on TV5 already
  • i've seen Trois-Huit (Night Shift) last night. it was really good! a gay film with a heart...

Carlitos Sigion-Reyna, who was sittting next to us, seemed struck with fascination while watching the film.

i think, they'll be having a regular film screening of Amelie in Shangri-la..if you noticed their billboard, it says, it's "coming soon".

Olivier Assayas' Les Destinees is three hours long and an incoherent mess. That said, there are good things in it--Emmanuel Beart, mostly, some good acting from the one playing her husband, and good pottery. Lovely cinematography by someone named Gautier.

Le zebre is the best pero sayang at di na ipapalabas. sana ulitin by request.
I am disappointed with MarthaMartha. i saw it yesterday and i believe everyone would have been too.
nag umpisa sa gitna ang movie then after awhile nagumpisa sa start then inulit ang first scene. the movie itself is not that GREAT (my opinion)
