Look back on the first few months of In the Zone!
APRIL 2002
On In The Zone's first day on air, their guest
was no less than legendary Chito Loyzaga -commissioner of
the now defunct MBA - to talk about his league and the Philippine
basketball scene in general. As we were in the thick of the
MBA playoffs at that time, TJ and Jude gave their fearless
forecasts as to who will advance to the next rounds. We also
had a poll about our listeners' favorite league, and much
to TJ's chagrin, Jude's UAAP garnered the most votes. On the
22nd, Binky Favis and Frankie Lim of the National Team's coaching
staff joined us on our second episode to talk about the developments
of our nationals and their scouting reports on our international
opponents. We also had a poll about who was most deserving
to be called the MVP of the NBA and there was a tie between
Tim Duncan and Jason Kidd. April 29th brought in F1 enthusiast
Nono Felipe to talk about Formula 1 racing, and the head coach
of the Adamson Falcons Coach Luigi Trillo. On our poll, we
found out that our listeners thought that either Ron Hale
or Derrick Brown should be considered the best imports of
the PBA Governor's Cup.
MAY 2002
May was a pretty busy month for us. On the 6th,
world class driver Angelo Barreto talked about how it feels
like to compete internationally and about his favorite racing
circuits. We also talked about our favorite sports quotes.
The Golden Boy Noy Castillo was chosen by our listeners to
be the best shooter in the PBA. May 13, Dominic Uy of the
ICTSI Archers joined us in the booth as we launched our Beat
the Pro contest where he and TJ were creamed by The Rock and
Xiaoyu of PinoyExchange. We also gave Coach Ryan Gregorio
of Purefoods a call to talk about his first head coaching
stint, and we were also joined by the people of White Rock
to talk about the Bikini Open. On the 20th, Nash Racela and
Ryan Gregorio, 2 of the top young coaches in the land today,
joined us in our discussion on the PBA finals. The series
between Alaska and Purefoods stood even at 2-2 and both coaches
shared their thoughts on the exciting matchup. In our last
show for the month of May, we called up Commissioner Butch
Ramirez for a chat about the Asian Games and the status of
Philippine sports in general.
JUNE 2002
Our first June show was pretty beefy to say the least.
We had Mike Cortez in the booth to talk about the then-upcoming
UAAP season and his plans on turning pro among other things.
Game 7 between the Lakers and the Kings was happening around
the same time so Jude and TJ did a play-by-play. On the 10
we had a lead of guests. The volleyball contingent was in
the Philippines for the first leg of their tournament so we
gave Domeka Garramendi a call. We also talked to a bunch of
hardcore football fans about the then-ongoing World Cup, and
we also talked to Dynamite Danny Seigle. We conducted a poll
wherein the listeners tried to predict whether the finals'
series will end in 4, 5, 6 or 7 games. The madam airings of
sports picked 4. June 17 we talked about the favorite sports
movies of Pexers and of our listeners. The PBL finals was
nearing it's exciting end, so we had a poll on whether Ateneo
or Blue would win with Ateneo winning by a landslide. We called
PBL coaches Ricky Dandan and Leo Isaac to talk about the exciting
series. On the 24, we aired TJ's interview with legendary
PBA pointguard Ronnie Magsanoc. We had a good time as UAAP
analyst Mico Halili went on board with us to verbally spar
with Jude and TJ. We had a hilarious conversation about the
look-alikes in sports from the predictable Noy Castillo-Edu
Manzano ones to the bizarre Mike Bibby-Vampire monster ones.
JULY 2002
July brought in more World Cup talk and we had
a poll about whether or not the listeners thought the Philippines
could one day send a team to participate in it, and most of
our listeners, bless their hearts, said yes. Simon Villalon
shared his thoughts with us on the cup, and aside from soccer,
we also talked about Wimbledon and the NBA draft. The week
after that, Jojo Villa and Ryan Gregorio were with us to talk
about the UAAP and who they think had the strongest chance
of bringing home the title. July 15 we talked to Freddie Jalasco
and had a very entertaining albeit controversial chat with
UP rookie JR Reyes. The next week we talked to Angelina Gruen
to talk about how the Filipinos were embracing volleyball,
and we also had Paolo Mendoza & Luigi Trillo to talk about
the UAAP. On the 29 we woke up Danny Seigle and we talked
about SMB, the PBA in general, and his recurring back spasms
injury.
AUGUST 2002
Former MBA Commissioner Chito Loyzaga graced
the show with his presence wherein we talked about the how
his league was folding up. Another hot topic of the day was
the up and coming collegiate and amateur players. TJ &
Jude debated as to who were the top 5 recruits for the PBA,
and this is where the infamous Cortez-Villanueva argument
stemmed from. The week after that marked the first meeting
of the De La Salle Green Archers and the Ateneo Blue Eagles
in the UAAP, and that game was discussed and nitpicked by
our resident basketball experts. We had a text poll about
who was the most popular PBA player, and according to the
text line, it is Dynamite Danny Seigle. The week after that,
we recieved a lot of comments (and violent reactions, may
I add) from the fans of Mark "The Spark" Caguioa
regarding the poll. We phoned Coach Joel Banal of the Blue
Eagles to talk about the UAAP campaign, and we also had a
chat with UP's Tessa Jasminez about FEU's controversial Arwind
Santos. A text poll showed that our listeners think that Mike
Cortez is the UAAP's best defensive player. On the 26th, we
discussed a very popular thread in PinoyExchange - The Best
and Worst Sportscaster thread, which is, of course, very close
to Jannelle, Jude, & TJ's heart.
SEPTEMBER 2002
We had quite a beefy show on the 2nd day of
September. We called up Coach Bill Bayno and talked to him
about the on-going finals between his Talk 'n Text Phonepals
and Coach Yeng Guiao's Batang Red Bull Thunder. We also got
to talk to DLSU's BJ Manalo about his career and how much
the Green Archers were dominating the UAAP. Coach Joel Banal
was once again on the show to talk about the very exciting
UAAP Season 65. September 9th we called up Coach Turo Valenzona
of the UE Red Warriors to talk about the spitting incident
between his Ronald Tubid and Mac Cardona of the Archers. We
also talked about the US Open, and the NCAA. On the 16th,
we had the Cool Cat Mike Cortez on the show for the second
time and we talked about how the Archers just missed the elusive
sweep as they were beaten by their archrivals, the Ateneo
Blue Eagles, in their last game of the regular season. We
also talked to Coach Yeng Guiao about the championship run
of the Batang Red Bull Thunder in the PBA. In anticipation
of the UAAP Finals, we talked to Gec Chia and Wes Gonzales
of the Ateneo on the 23rd. We gave Butch Ramirez a call as
well.
