This is turning out to be a wonderful gay lit thread.

Eponine0907: Youbare so lucky! I would LOVE to take up gay Lit, especially if it would be Neil who would be teaching.

Here are the gay books I have and have read:

West Coast Gay and Lesbian Fiction
Danton Remoto's X-Factor: Tales Outside the Closet
Neil Garcia's Slip/Pages, Closet Queeries, Phil. Gay Culture
    Ladlad 1 and 2
    Between Us: Lesbian Love Letters

I don't have that much yet, pero I read stories and plays from other books, and articles, etc.
You see, sometimes it doesn't matter if you own the books, as long as you do sme research and extra readings.

But of course, it would be lovely to start a collection of your own.

A Different Bookstore has two books there I would love to buy: A World In Us, which is an anthology of gay writings (fiction and poems yata), and Love Speaks In Different Names yata... di ko sure yung title. This is poetry naman. They're both quite expensive, I think, if I remember correctly.

neil doesn't teach na ba? i remember feeling a bit weird at the start of the semester when i enrolled in his class, but i wound up enjoying the whole course!

i especially liked our discussions on the short stories he assigned us. it gives me a whole new perspective on certain things that i never knew before.

have you watched "priscilla, queen of the desert"? i got a copy of the script in australia, and neil was delighted -- we even had a sort of reading session in class!

Hehe... I know... enrolling in a gay lit class would REALLY feel weird at the start.

i wonder if you still have your syllabus for that course? can you pls. give me a copy? i'd really appreciate that. i'd just do the research by myself.

as for the movie... no, not yet. i'd love to look for it, though.

yeah, unfortunately Neil doesn't teach anymore. he teaches MA. pero he's still active in other things... madalas siyang nasa UST creative writing center. also, kaka-launch lang ng book niyang "Kaluluwa." it was a book-signing, poetry reading thing that night. cool. andun sila D.M. Reyes, Ronald Baytan, Jing Hidalgo, etc.

    He's really nice.

You can also get a copy of Cubao sa dekada 80. It narrates gay activities in that era.

    hi there!
if you wanna read gay novels, i suggest the author Jeanette Winterson. fabulous style, highly creative plots, superb structure. too much praise, you think? well, her work is every bit deserving. some titles:

The Powerbook (my favorite book to date - most of the quotes are OUCH!)

Written on the Body (a lover, whose gender is unknown -- and believe me, it keeps you guessing -- talks about the loved one who is a married woman)

Gut Symmetries (the mistress and the wife fall in love)

Art Objects (non-fiction, essay, commentary on art)

all the books are great because they're intelligent but emotional. so realistic in terms of showing that love is painful any which context of gender you put it. errotic, yes, and very well written. catches you off guard!

vaccine : I'm still trying to look for it. Mahirap maghanap kasi dito sa Baguio.

Sa mga nag-recommend naman: Latest authors ba ang mga yun?
    e.i. Susie Bright
    EM Forster
    Oscar Wilde
    Jaime An Lim
    Virginia Wolf?
I mean, ngayon lang ba sila nakilala? So I can somehow lessen my search.

    Thanks

ito ba yung librong Cubao 1980 ni Tony Perez? maganda nga ito. pero hindi naman lahat ng gay activities sa 80s ay tinatalakay dito. sa isang partikular na kaso lamang.

Those you mentioned above aren't really "contemporary." Except for Jaime An Lim, though. Medyo bago lang siya, compared sa iba. Yung iba, they're classics. In short, they're dead. They have but their works which outlived them. Lumang-luma na 'yan. By the way, those you mentioned are mostly British and American writers.

Yesterday, I got my package containing the latest addition to my slowly growing gay lit books:

Queer as Folk: The Scripts by Russel Davies

At least, even if I don't get to watch the show, I can read the original scripts.

Can't wait to read it. I've read great reviews about it.

I want to post an image of the book cover but I dunno how to.

yes, most definitely. CRY TO HEAVEN is also my favorite. I'm blown away with how Rice blurred the lines of homosexuality / transexuals, heterosexuals and political power play in Venice.... A very lush reading--it's like taking an art history tour of Renaissance Venice with several drag queens...
