IMHO, our heart is either 100% giving (=0% taking; like Jesus Christ's heart) or 100% taking (=0% giving). Does God look at the tithing or the giving?

CAN WE - AT LAST - FACE UP TO THE TRUTH ABOUT TITHING?

The Bible is clear about tithing. However, the links above is not about what the Bible says but about what the BLOG artist leads you to think, which adds to the confusion.

Jesus gave a tenth of his TIME, 3 years of public ministry out of 33 years of his life. As far as Christianity is concerned, the issue of tithing is one of inward expression of faith.

Using the example of the widow who gave a coin to the temple from the meager resources that she had, Jesus was clear that it is not in the amount that you give but in the spirit that a "sacrifice was offered". Tithing therefore cannot be forced on a person at all. It is a voluntary act, and no one should be forced to contribute. If men believe and practice their faith then charity and giving alms would be done from one's heart rather than imposed by Pharisees.

Let us all be reminded that it was the Pharisees who loved money and turned the temple into a marketplace that made Jesus furious. It is the only time in the gospels that he got really angry. It was Jesus' collision with the wrong ways of the Pharisees that led to his death by a most cruel penalty imposed by the religious.

The religious who forces tithing is not following the way of Jesus, but the ways of the Pharisees and the merchants who sold their wares in the God's temple.

1. The Apostle Paul never once appealed to tithing even though he obviously often suffered financial difficulties. However, he wrote rather a lot about FREELY giving financial support where one is able.

2. The early Church - prior to Constantine - DID NOT uphold tithing.

3. Tithing was a widespread practise in the ancient world - not something peculiar to Israel.

In our day, strongly tithing congregations often become very wealthy congregations with much to spend on various projects and with the minister enjoying an affluent lifestyle, even while many within that congregation might live in a financially very precarious world. Is this not at odds with the examples within the Book of Acts which show Christians within a congregation SHARING their substance so that none should suffer lack? Why do we ignore this clear NEW TESTAMENT example, while being quick to seize an Old Testament example which finds no New Testament support?

5. 2 Corinthians 9:7 effectively bars tithing for the New Testament Church of God since it plainly states that Christians should not give (and the whole context is of financial giving) "under compulsion."

Tithing shows our dependence on God and takes away our dependence on money, our job, savings and most of all on ourselves!

If one depends on God for his or her salvation then why can't they depend on Him for their daily needs?

on to MEM's thread revival and going on-topic, tithing was a commandment in the old testament. it's Christian era. when we offer, we give what our hearts dictate. 10% or not for as long as you give it voluntarily and with all your heart. well, it is my faith.
