Post roy jones jr...the second coming of Ali??

they're both skilled and lightning quick and they both have a tendency to talk a lot. though ALi is the greatest, do you think Roy jr. is the new version of him???

pound for pound, i've never seen anyone as formidable as roy jones jr. you won't want to blink when you watch him or you might miss a punch or possibly a haymaker. you can hear the wind as his fists swing into the air and the crashing sound when it comes in contact into someone's sorry mug or body. his footwork is simply amazing when he glides around the ring. he has quick reflexes and impenetrable defense.

pound for pound, roy jones has the edge against muhammad ali.

but he's criticized for being too good. almost all his fights were lopsided and that's why he doesn't get the attention that he thinks he deserves. even if he beat bernard hopkins again, promoters will still shy away from promoting him. he has nothing left to prove in his weight class.

though Roy jr. has awesome punching power, Ali has something that makes him the greatest.....his ability to think and psyche out his opponents.

Roy Jones Jr. is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, and he is the best thing to emerge in boxing NEXT to Muhammad Ali. He is in a league of his own, and I agree with Hot Pants that he has nothing left to prove in his weight class, so I think he should move up to the heavyweight class and beat the hell out of everybody there. When he becomes heavyweight champion, I think he will finally get the respect and recognition that he deserves as the best boxer there is.

    Thumbs down

Hell no. There will never be another Ali. Roy Jones, Jr. is great in his own way, but his refusal to go up in weight class after dominating it for so long still bugs The Rock. It's like he fears the possibility of a challenger that may be waiting in that next level.

roy jones may not be an ali, but surely, he is the hands down greatest pound for pound fighter in the 90's and early 2000 before he retires. he can't step up in weight class anymore... he is a natural 168 pounder... he started as a middleweight... step up all the way to heavyweight??? it's a dumb move, that's why he is stayin' at light heavy... it's a shame because his skills are light skills away from anybody, so no one could test him the way ali had frazier and george foreman. if somebody comes up, then we all could see jones' legacy and greatness.... no one, not even that polish born clown champ of wbo, can fight a good fight with roy. maybe hopkins will make him look bad, but he'll whip that azz anyway...

It's quite a stretch to draw parallelisms between the careers of Roy Jones, Jr. and Muhammad Ali. For one, Roy's career is confined mainly in the sports arena, while Ali's legacy transcended his field to become one of America's leading symbols for civil rights in the 60s and 70s.

As a boxer, Roy Jones may have better tools and techniques (not to mention packing the heavier punching power), but Muhammad Ali has the unmatched audacity and the street intelligence to stand down the warmongering, fascistic tendencies of Robert MacNamara and his military-industrial complex.

Well, arguably, Roy Jones Jr. is the better boxer. He's got the talent, the speed and the power to dominate the ring. But there's one thing that Roy can't hold a candle to Ali, and that's charisma.

Roy can never touch Ali's level. Not even close.

Ali has lost fights. But who's counting? The one thing that separates the likes of Ali, Robinson, Louis, Leonard, Haggler, Duran, or even contemporaries like Chavez, Whitaker, Hopkins, or dare I say---even Trinidad, is that these fighters dare to be great.

That's what the essence of the sport is all about. Roy is probably the most gifted boxer ever to grace the ring. He's insanely talented. But that's all there is to his legacy. Nothing more.

Oh yeah, Roy is thinking of fighting Vassily Jirov sometime this year. Jirov is an undefeated cruiserweight champion, an olympian and a knockout specialist whos's got one of the highest KO percentages in the boxing ranks today.

Roy will win, again. By a mile. He'll take Jirov so seriously that it'll probably be a bloodletting. Okay, the Russian is strong. But he's too slow, too flacid, too bulky and too undertalented to compete with Roy. It will be Jones via KO or a stoppage in the later rounds.

But Jones will fight anyone who'll make him look good. That includes all the Kelley's, Griffins and Hardings of the boxing world. And he won't take the risk of being in a fight wherein victory is not assured. Many think the reason he'll take this match is because he thinks he'll being able to silence all his critics with minimum risk involved. Personally, Jones will forever be in a no-win situation---off the ring. Pitiful really.

Roy is one of the good guys. Probably moreso than Ali. But in the context of what is being talked about, there's no comparison.
