i think there are a lot of good quality filipino movies... but unfortunately, they were all decades old. so some of us might not have a chance of watching them.

You know, I haven't seen a really good Filipino movie yet. I haven't seen Rizal, Oro Plata Mata, Bata Bata, Sakay, and all those supposedly good ones.

    Ada,

I've seen "Orapronobis" and I don't think it's good. It just created hype/controversy in Europe because of the "brain-eating" scene done by the vigilantes, which was the subject of the film. I think Brocka has other better films than that.

Personally I like Oro, Plata, Mata, Himala and Kisapmata.

I am not into Filipino movies too. But, I would say that the following movies I saw are worth mentioning:

Oro, Plata, Mata - I saw this like 3 times, and the film is really worth-watching. There were nudity, gross language and pumping scenes, but done in the real contextual essence. The film higlighted the egregious Filipino psyche amidst the Japanese occupation. If I may add, the most haunting scene for me was the scene where Puccini's Humming Chorus is played as score. I am not going to mention the exact scene since I believe that you ought to find it yourself.

Kisapmata - I believe, is one of the best Filipino films ever made. I liked the introduction scene where Charito Solis, Vic Silayan, and Charo Santos were seated and were like forming a triangular blocking on your screen, a precursor to their relationship dilemma as father-mother, incestuous father-daughter, and disturbing mother-daughter.

Kakabakaba Ka Ba? - This is one of the best Filipino comedy films I have seen. Its mirth and sheer satirical cakewalk are still unparalleled until now.

Sister Stella L - An account of a nun's peregrination towards self-scrutiny and political illumination. For me, is one of Mike de Leon's best films.

Broken Marriage - The topsy-turviness of modern day relationship was told here in a gashing manner. One of the best Filipino films on such themes.

Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon? - One of Eddie Romero's estimable masterpieces which explored the end-of-century coming forth of Filipino nationhood. This film deserves all the accolades it still can get.

Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag - Yet another one of Lino Brocka's film statements on politics and the complex Filipino psyche. Personally, the best Lino Brocka film.

Himala - The biting religious hipocrisy was best presented in this Ishmael Bernal film. Way to go, Ate Guy.

Although considered one of Brocka's best films, I wasn't that impressed with Orapronobis. Just like what dudung said, that was all about it - the gross brain-eating scene, nothing else. And I am really scratching my head till now because of the title. It should be Ora pro nobis. As far as I know, it should be 3 words if you are going to consider its latin etymology.

Other Filipino films worth-watching (I will not discuss these films here anymore, but you bet, you owe yourself some popcorn and you have to watch these films!):

    Tinimbang Ka Nguni't Kulang
    Jaguar
    Bona
    Insiang
    Nunal Sa Tubig

My rant: ENOUGH OF RIZAL FILMS!!!

Tagal ko na napanood yung magaganda at award-winning Filipino films:

    Oro Plata Mata
    Ora Pro Nobis
    Minsan May Isang Gamugamu
    Sakay

I haven't watched that much Filipino films lately but when I was a kid I loved Filipino films. My favorites:

    1. Captain Barbell
-I watched this when I was a kid and I really loved it! Its funny and after watching it again recently I couldn't stop laughing. Minsan corny sya but the corny-ness of the gags is what made it funny.

    2. Ora Prono Bis
-I personally thought this was a good movie. But I got weirded out by the killings, but then, I guess the Ora Prono Bis are really that way. I don't understand why the English title of the movie was "Fight For Us", though.

    3. Ang Dalawang Buhay ni Plaridel
-Ok, I know this is out of topic, but I just want to give credit to the first ever Filipino play I have watched in my life. Great script, amazing actors, perfect setting and well-made production, this play is perfect. I didn't waste my 200 bucks at all. I wish I could watch it again, though.

It wasnt a good movie but it will always have a place in my memories - BAGETS!

Really good movies are rare and hardly make any money... most of them by Carlos Siguion-Reyna and lately, Olive Lamasan and Marilou Diaz-Abaya.

If you havent checked our local flicks but want to I suggest: "Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit" (a take on Wuthering Heights), "Abot Kamay ang Pangarap (Maricel Soriano), "Madrasta" (Sharon Cuneta) and there's this one with Aiko Melendez & Chin Chin where they have a custody battle over this kid... forgot the title but its not half bad.

  14. #34
You know, this isn't probably not even CLOSE to the best, but it was one of the first Filipino flicks I've seen.

"Maging Sino Kaman", starring Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla.

Ok, ok! So it's NOT that good! lol... :P I have limited resources, you know. I'd like to see "Rizal", though. I've heard pretty good reviews about it.

  15. #35
sad to say that i haven't watch *** mga pinagsasabi niyo like Oro Plata Mata (masyadong bata pa ako nun), pero i've watch Sakay, ok sya. I also like Madrasta.
on Muro-ami, well, it really deserves the awards on which they won on Metro Manila Filmfest puro pang-technical.
Rizal, honestly hindi ko pa napapanood, pero maganda daw siya kesa sa muro-ami.
