    Red face [MERGED] Hyperthyroidism

Hi! I've got goiter since 2nd year high school. I'm just wondering if some of you have or experience the same symptoms that I have. I'm not sure kasi if all that I have are real symptoms of somebody with a goiter.

    Here's a list of what I have:

    1. nervousness & anxiety - even if there's no need to be nervous, like calling / talking to somebody, explaining a report to your boss (I've worked with him for more than a year now), etc.

    2. Falling hair - I've got long hair, but I'm not sure if it's normal para manlagas hair ko just by combing it. Siguro mga 2 to 3 strands when I comb & 5 or more after a bath

    3. soft voice - kaya if I want to shout or speak out loud in a crowd, di effective, kelangan ko pa ng microphone. Sometimes kasi irritating lalo na if you have to always repeat everything you said

    4. Have difficulty breathing - Di naman to lagi. Pero minsan weird kasi nakaupo lang naman ako

    5. Palpitations - same thing as #4, I sometimes have palpitations as if ang layo ng tinakbo or inakyat ko

    6. Mood swings - I know this may be normal for women having their period, pero sakin, kahit wala akong period, bigla-bigla akong nagtatampo for petty reasons, or minsan parang I'm so sad that I just want to burst into tears. Madalas din akong ma-depress.

Well, those are the symptoms I can think of right now. If you can, pls. share naman your experiences in having goiter. It would help if I know I'm not the only one.

    Question

Does your doctor know about these symptoms?
Are you getting treatment for these symptoms?
Has your doctor checked your thyroid hormone levels and is he monitoring these?

The last time I had a check-up was in 1998, ata.

    Please see your doctor.

Your symptoms, particularly anxiety and palpitations, though not specific, are concerning for functional/toxic goiter. This means that your thyroid gland may be producing too much thyroid hormones and causing a state of hyperthyroidism.

TNX Doc. Nga pala, goiter symptom rin ba ang having headaches?

    Post

Headaches are not typically associated with hyperthyroidism but headaches are non-specific symptoms and could be caused by a myriad of factors.

A neck mass may be due to a variety of reasons, but the most common is a thyroid problem. A thyroid problem may be hyperthyroid (too much thyroid hormone levels in the body), hypothyroid (too little thyroid hormone levels) or euthyroid ("normal" thyroid hormone levels).

Each problem has a different treatment plan. So it's still best to see a doctor, preferably an endocrinologist, so that the specific treatment can be tailored for the patient.

    Hyperthyroidism

doc, pano po pag may loss of hair? ano po bang medical explanation nito? and how long does it take na mag loss of hair even if your under medication na? thanks Po!

Hair loss in hyperthyroidism is due to hormonal changes.

If you're experiencing hair loss and are just starting treatment for a hyperthyroid or hypothyroid condition, it's likely that for most of you, the loss will slow down, and eventually stop, once hormone levels are stabilized and in the normal range.

    Goiter

Hi Doc, Is it true that goiter affects the fertility of a woman?

  15. #15
Yes, it is true that thyroid problems can affect the woman's chances to get -- or stay -- pregnant, IF it remains uncontrolled. With proper management and the right medications, pregnancy can be uneventful.

    tks, doc...

before po kasi im taking medicine for my goiter pero lumiit na po yun hanggang inihinto ko na po ang gamot. I got married last December and trying to conceive, is its possible po ba na goiter ko pa rin ang problem kaya hirap pa rin akong mabuntis?

  17. #17
Have you been following up with your endocrinologist? If your goiter has been controlled already, there should not be any problem conceiving. Maybe you should ask your endocrinologist nga, maybe he/she would do some tests to check if you are truly "controlled".

  18. #18
mula po ng hininto ko ang gamot two years ago, di ko na uli nakapunta sa doctor ko.. kalangan ko na nga bumalik para makasigurado, tks doc!

I just reread your earlier post. Do visit your endocrinologist so that you can be checked.

Just to let you know, our definition of infertility requires that you not get pregnant after 1 YEAR of unprotected sex. If you just got married last December, maybe it's just not time yet. But, if you haven't seen your endocrinologist for 2 years, it's also a good idea to have a long due follow up.
