Is this a serious question? If we had one we should be hearing some news about it since the Games are coming soon because it would be a big deal - to us at least - since we're a tropical country.

I don't know, but if we go through hell in order to come up with a contingent for the Summer Olympics, I hardly noticed a whimper in purgatory in preparation for this year's Winter Olympics.

The Philippines has already participated in the Winter Olympics. We were represented in the (I'm not sure but I think it was the) 1988 Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada by a Filipino (I forgot his name) residing in the United States in the Men's Individual Luge. That's the event where one goes through the course lying down on a board called a luge. Our kababayan finished almost dead last in a field of over 40 entires in the event won by Jens Mueller of East Germany in 3:05.548. I think he only finished better than the bet of the Netherlands Antilles and maybe the bet from Puerto Rico.

For the upcoming 2002 Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, we might be represented by Michael Novales, one of the top young ice skaters from the SM Megamall Skating Club. Novales has been training in the United States for the past months and is reportedly being offered American citizenship to represent the USA. I hope he stays a Filipino.

hmm, that's interesting. If he is offered citizenship to represent the United States, I think it would be wise for him not to turn it down. The US has better training facilities, better coaches, and let's face it, more experience in winter sports. He would stand a better chance of winning a medal if he represented the US.

for a country with just what? 4 skating rinks? we've produced some pretty good skaters, if i remember correctly a couple years back nanalo pa tayo over Japan... with a little more training, maybe we'll be able to send a contingent to the Winter Olympics... saka, IMHO, baka mas may chance pa tayo makakuha ng gold in the Winters...

i saw this skater (pairs) who played in Millionaire's special ed, her name's Tai Babilonia, and Pinoy sya. she represented the US in the 70s and i think she got a medal... the great thing is, she's proud of her Filipino roots
