Hank Cheyne
It was a great day for Hank Cheyne when he received word that he had landed the role of Ricardo Torres, the newly promoted police detective on "Sunset Beach." That same morning, he was notified that Theater L.A. had just nominated him for an Ovation Award for Best Featured Actor for his role in The Tomcat Theater Company's critically acclaimed production of "A Kind Man and a Good Lover."
But if you had told Cheyne years earlier that he would one day be earning such accolades, he would have shaken his head in disbelief. Born and raised in Santa Maria, Calif., Cheyne entered the University of Santa Clara as a business major. While playing on the school's baseball team, however, he tinkered with the idea of a career in professional ball, but opted instead to enter UCLA's School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree.
Shortly thereafter, while trying to decide what direction he would like his future to take, Cheyne was introduced to an acting coach through a friend and "got bit by the bug" on his first theatrical venture. "Being on stage was like the feeling I got from baseball," he recalls. "It really got my adrenaline going and it was rewarding. If you don't know that feeling, then you don't know what you're missing. But if you have experienced that feeling, then you know that you never want to let it go."
Cheyne went on to capture theatrical roles in such productions as "Mad Woman of Chaillot," "American Life," "The Awful Truth," "The Roof" and "Accommodating Nona." He also co-founded The Tomcat Theater Company in Los Angeles with several actor friends.
Cheyne has also accumulated several feature-film credits, including "Bad Blood" with Lorenzo Lamas and "Killing Obsession" with John Savage. His television credits include a recurring role on "One West Waikiki," as well as guest-starring roles in such prime-time series as "ER" and "Dark Justice." Daytime viewers may best know him for his two-year stint as Scott Love/LaSalle on NBC's "Another World," for which he received a People's Choice nomination for Best New Actor in a Daytime Series.
Cheyne lives with his wife, Missy, in Santa Monica, Calif. They share their home with their "kids": two malamute/chow/wolf-mix dogs, Cody and Pozo. Cheyne's birthday is August 13.
