Rey Nambatac is ready to defend the Letran Knights crown

BEFORE the Letran Knights won the men’s basketball title in Season 91 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), nobody believed in the team—including its players.

“My teammates and I laughed when our coach told us we would be champions this season,” recalled Knights point guard Rey Nambatac. A low off-season ranking explained why he was not expecting the team to do well... http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/219527...-knights-crown

LETRAN’S Kevin Racal and Far Eastern University’s Roger Pogoy will be feted by the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps in the Collegiate Basketball Awards on Jan. 26 at the Saisaki-Kamayan in Greenhills.

The members of the champion Knights and Tamaraws will receive the Pivotal Player awards from the group of scribes from national dailies and online portals covering the collegiate basketball beat.

Racal led the Knights to the NCAA title and Pogoy the Tamaraws to the UAAP crown, helping their schools end 10-year title droughts.

Racal averaged 20 points in the thrilling finals win by Letran over San Beda in his final stint in the NCAA before being signed by Alaska in the PBA.

The Knight erupted for 28 points in Game One before scoring 23 in the 85-82 overtime victory in the Game Three, helping Letran claim its 17th NCAA crown.

Pogoy, meanwhile, was one of FEU’s most consistent performers in the UAAP finals against University of Santo Tomas, averaging 14.7 points.

The Tamaraws won the school’s 20th UAAP basketball title.

The Pivotal Player award is given to players who made significant impact for their teams in the championship series.

Past winners of the honor include Garvo Lanete, Ryan Buenafe, Dave Marcelo, Kirk Long, Art dela Cruz, Alfred Aroga and Anthony Semerad.

Also receiving awards are FEU coach Nash Racela and Aldin Ayo, the former Letran mentor now with La Salle.

The UAAP-NCAA Press Corps will also recognize other top performers, including the Smart Player of the Year and the Collegiate Mythical Five.

    here's another rumour

Randy Alcantara set to take over from Ayo as Letran Knights coach, says source

RANDY Alcantara is set to assume the head-coaching job at Letran, sources told Spin.ph.

The Mapua juniors head coach and an assistant of Atoy Co in the seniors team, Alcantara, according to the source, is set to accept the Letran job, months after the position was left vacant by Aldin Ayo.

Pressed for comment by Spin.ph, Letran athletic director Fr. Vic Calvo neither confirmed nor denied Alcantara’s hiring, saying he has yet to receive information related to the head-coaching post.

However, sources said the former Mapua Cardinal is the choice of the Letran selection panel.

Alcantara, a former standout in the PBL and MBA who was picked by Shell in the third round of the talent-laden 1998 PBA rookie draft, will take over a Letran program fresh from winning the Season 91 men's basketball crown against San Beda, ending a decade-long title drought.

However, the Knights found themselves without a coach months after winning the title when Ayo accepted an offer to coach De La Salle in the UAAP.

Under Alcantara, rhe Red Robins became one of the premier high school programs in the country. Alcantara led the Red Robins to a finals appearance in Season 90, losing to San Beda in the finals.

The next head coach will take over a Letran squad that will no longer have Mark Cruz and Kevin Racal, the two pillars of the Knights side that became the Cinderella team of last season.

NU Bullpups head coach leads pack in Letran hunt
Written by: Matthew Li2016/01/26 11:44 AM

After a rollercoaster off-season, the defending NCAA Seniors Basketball champions may have finally found their guy to lead them in the NCAA Season 91 campaign.

According to a reliable source, National University Bullpups head coach Jeff Napa is the leading candidate to take the coveted job of coaching the 395 year old institution’s seniors basketball team.

With former Letran head coach Aldin Ayo taking lead assistant coach Glenn Capacio with him to Taft, Letran has interviewed various coaches to find the coach that could run the school’s basketball program in the long term.

Tiebreaker Times source said that Napa was not in attendance in the NU MBT’s practice session Monday morning to accommodate an interview with Letran officials. The source added that the meeting ended on a high note and the school’s officials were impressed with what Napa brings to the table for the Letran basketball program.

However, the source also added that Letran officials has set an interview with Monch Gavieres anytime today. Currently part of the Alaska Aces staff, Gavieres is a wildcard in the race since he is an alumnus of Letran. As of publishing though Napa is still the leading candidate for the job.

Napa is credited for leading the resurgence of National University’s juniors basketball program. Prior to the 73rd season of the UAAP, the Bullpups have been the cellar-dwellers of the tournament. With Napa at the helm, he led NU’s JBT to two second place finishes (UAAP Season 75 and 77) and two championships (UAAP Season 74 and 76). Currently, the Bullpups are plowing through the competition in the UAAP Season 78 Juniors Basketball Tournament with a perfect 11-0 slate. Moreover, his system has produced a number of blue-chip recruits that includes Ateneo’s Hubert Cani, La Salle’s Mark Dyke, UE’s Philip Manalang and current Bullpups Justin Baltazar and John Lloyd Clemente

The National University alumnus is also part of the coaching staff of Eric Altamirano in the school’s men’s basketball team.

mukhang si Jeff Napa na nga..

    not a bad choice.

I prefer Napa kaysa kay Capacio.

Welcome to Letran coach Jeff Napa!

I originally wanted a head coach that is also an alumnus but looking on Napa's achievements and credentials, he's not a bad choice either.
