I don't like undergravel filters. They're difficult to clean and become ineffective after a while, after which you will have to tear down the tank and start from scratch. It's also difficult to grow plants with undergravel filters. Better to get an internal or external power filter.

Overhead trickle filters are ok, but not if you are trying to grow plants. You want to minimize surface turbulence to preserve the CO2 that plants need, and trickle filters lose too much CO2.

Be careful about using just any kind of wood wood, because it can rot or release toxins into the water. Use only aged and dried driftwood. Or just use the ugly fake wood from the pet shop. Personally, I prefer rocks.

First, get rid of your undergravel filter then get a substrate that doesn't affect your water chemistry. Plants need light, and the more the better. Start with 2-4 watts of flourescent light per gallon of aquarium. For example, if you have a 20G aquarium, you can start with 2x20watt tubes. Full spectrum "daylight" tubes are better than "white" tubes. Plant growing tubes are good, but they have a pinkish color you might not like. If you have colorful fishes, the daylight tubes will show off their color best.

Start with fast-growing stem plants like cabomba, bacopa or water sprite. When they're established, you can start to add more difficult-to-grow plants like crypts or Echinodorus sp.

You should have done your research on aquatic plants BEFORE setting up your aquarium.

The driftwood you got is "taning". Im not sure about the spelling or the term but it will continue to do this for a period of time. I have 4 pcs of driftwood in my 100g and it is still taning up to now. I dont know if it will stop but the wood is almost 3 years old in my aquarium.

Also if you plan to keep cichlids then be careful with the plans you get since these types of fishes will eat your plants away.

woofers: I will try to check out that shop. Its too far away but I'll see if I can call them up to check if they have it in stock. I am really fascinated by the moss and it looks like a nice addition to my tank.

Drift woods release tanins that affect water chemistry and coloration. If you want to have live plants, either you plants them in pots them place them in the tank or straight to the substrate. But the second option will require you to remove your undergravel filter.

As for fish, you will also be limited to some South American and Southeast Asian species.

are there any turtle keepers here?

i have a7-inch red eared slider.. which i kept in a batya on feeding times.. tapos madalas dry lang sya.. palakad lakad..

anyway.. i've finally decided to buy her a tank.. 50 - 60 g to provide her lots of swimming space and be able to accomodate her pagka full-grown na sya..

where could i buy an affordable tank?

what filters should i use? mas malakas daw magdumi ang turtles, according to my research.. ano ang pinka cost-effective? (since my parents won't support me on this..)

other tips are welcome.. thanks in advance!

use an overhead filter - cheap and easy to maintain.

check this local pinoy site www.palhs.com/forum for tips on pets. it's mostly for fish but has stuff on reptiles as well

Turtles poop and pee a lot, so go for a power filter and change/clean the media frequently. Change the water frequently too. Also, try growing some fast-growing plants such as water sprite, bacopa, cabomba, etc. in the tank to help metabolize the waste products (ammonia, nitrates, etc.). I had a turtle before and plants really do help lessen the stink.

I think 1.7k is about right. How long is it, by the way? If it's at least 4 feet long, you'll be able to use the 4-foot long flourescent lighting fixtures nicely.

    thanks!

    urgent question

i plan to modify my present aquarium setup,
    QUESTIONS:

    1. KAILANGAN PA BANG TANGGALIN KO
    ANG UNDERGRAVEL FILTER? bakit?

    2. ANU-ANO PA BA ANG MGA DAPAT ICONSIDER like yung fertilizer etc?

    3. mahirap bang alagaan yun o imaintain yung ganitong setup?

SALAMAT, sana may nakakaalam nito at magreply

Maybe you're using air pump with your undergravel filter. Try using Powerhead together with undergravel filter. We use that (UGF) with 2 powerheads (left and right). One a year lang kami maglinis ng aquarium!

i have a heavily planted tank for about a month now... i'm still observing and studying the tank... my background plants are so healthy but my foregrounds are not so healthy that they show some brown spots... i think light does not reach the bottom of my tank...

to your question, i can share my limited knowledge...
using ugf for planted aquariums are not advisable but i've heard some people using it with good results... i'm currently using those very common overhead/trickle filters... medyo okay naman siya basta ilagay mo yung output tube na nakalubog sa tubig para minimal yung surface agitation... the lesser the surface agitation the better for planted aquariums kasi nakakabilis ng release ng carbon dioxide ito... if you have lots of money then go for canister filters...

planted aquariums need good amount of light, i've read that you should have at least 2watts/gallon... as of the moment, i only have 1.5W/G because i'm testing if it will work in my set-up...

i use fertilizers because i think it will be a major factor for my plants to thrive... without going to details, it has those macro and micronutrients needed by plants... pwede kahit in liquid or tablet form...

water changes are also important... i think the amount of water change and how often depends on the type on inhabitants you have...

choice of substrate is also important...
i'll try one day the use of CO2 systems...

if you have any questions i'll try to answer..
