Rainbowfishes are gaining popularity because of their colors and activities. You can ty some and tey also go best in school. There are a lot of different species that can be found in different stores. Personally, I like the Dwarf Rainbow, Melanotaenia praecox. Corydoras are good scavengers. There are a lot different species to choose from, Bronze (the common and cheapest), Panda, Sterbae, Pepperred, etc.

any suggestions about my filtration? thanks Rage_within

The overhead filter (trickle filter) is ok. Get the one that has three layers. Galing nun sa biological filtration and ok pa sa oxygenation ng water.

for those into marine tanks, check this site. loads of info

Dude, if you've got cash, don't scrimp on your filtration. Hell, if you have the cash go for eheim or fluvals.

dude anong eheim and fluvals, ang nakuha kong filter is undergravel e na notice ko na its not that good in cleaning the water so im planning to purchase an additional overhead. mhen! what a mistake!!! and a watse of money!! im already quite frustrated

oops my bad. eheims and fluvals are brands of canister filters. undergravel filters (UGF) are not really great. if you have a substrate or gravel, try to vacuum it. you can buy gravel vacuums in most pet shops. overheads are ok too. easy to maintain and does a decent job.

as suggested by rage_within, do have some scavengers to help you clean your tank.

as for me, my arowana tank has no gravel. just plain glass bottom.

good luck and enjoy your hobby and don't be embarrased to ask questions. better to have lots of questions than lots of dead fish.

They're brands of aquarium stuff actually. Eheim is German. They have a reputation of being high-end (high quality, high price). They do everything from filters to CO2 injection systems. Very chic, stylish equipment-- if you like the euro-Alien/Matrix aesthetic.

Fluval is Hagen's line of internal and canister filters. I have a Fluval 4 internal filter. It works, but then again I have a heavily planted tank and don't need much filtration. If I were to set up a new 50+g tank, I would go for an Eheim or Fluval external canister filter as the Fluval internal is a b1tch to open.

There are other, cheaper filtration options. I have a 5g with a dual sponge filter driven by an airpump. It has about a pound of java moss and 3 mollies. I haven't fed or changed water for the tank in over a month, and the fish are doing ok. I even have a 2.5g with a single molly, assorted stem plants and a single Echinodorus sp., and NO filtration. I haven't fed that tank in a while, either. The fish subsist on algae and whatever little bugs fall into the water!

I avoid the overhead trickle filters because they're ugly and dissipate too much CO2, which I need for my plants. UGFs are difficult to maintain.

i lost my first arowana (australian gold - 12inches)when i didn't listen to my mom not to mix it with an overly aggresive 8inch oscar. nag-away nga as my mom knew and both died from injuries. too late to do any treatments. Sana last fish to lose but i doubt it. kaya alaga na yung mga natitirang isda ko

I'm planning to set up a 50 gal tank for some discus. Regarding the breed of discus, I'm planning to get the cheaper ones initially since this is the first time I'll try to raise/breed those fish.

    Anyway...

I'm an advocate of a very good filtration system in your aquarium. The problem is, I can't seem to find the best setup for discus since these fish don't like their water disturbed. So powerheads and airstones are out of the question.

I'm still going for an UGF but I need something else to supplement it. I'm not favorable to setting up a sump to handle my filtration needs since I don't have enough space for another tank. This goes the same for out-of-tank canisters. Trickle filters create too much turbulence when the water goes back into the tank.

    Any suggestions?

I think trickle filter will do. Remember, Amazon River is the home of Discus in the wild. IMO, Discus can handle the output of the Trickle filter. This is not as strong as powerheads and canister filters. Although it can be pretty ugly, it is the best filtration, biologically and mechanically. Option for canisters and powerheads is the rainbar unit.

Thanks, Red_Devil. I'll probably shop around for a "good looking" (aesthetically pleasing?) trickle filter. I'll probably do something to the output pipe too just to lessen the turbulence (add a perforated cap or something). I plan to keep the water in the tank as stagnant as possible, without sacrificing filtration and aeration. That's my personal challenge for the meantime.

Rainbar unit? I have no idea what it is. I'll ask for it when I get the chance. I'll probably look it up on the web too.

    Thanks again!

    Post question

  16. #56

    Post

kung di naman malakas aircon mo, there is no need for heater so long the temp is constant or there is no drastic changes.

regarding cleaning the gravel, if it is new and about to put it in the tank (first time setup), yes banlawan mo to clean off the dust but no need to dry out in the sun. if you're talking about gravel already in tank with the fish, you can get a gravel vacuum from most of the shops. it siphons the crud but not the gravel. it's still best to do preventive methods such as not overfeeding you fish (minimal leftovers) and having some bottom dwellers to eat the detritus such as loaches, plecos & crayfish (for freshwater) or cleaner shrimps (for marine)

Buy a 50-peso thermometer from the pet shop. Know the temperature range your fishes are comfortable with. Then decide if you need a heater or not.

As stated above, fish prefer constant temperature. And another thing, what particular species of fish are we talking about. If it is like Goldfish, Carp, White Cloud Mountain Minnow, then it's fine as they prefer lower temperatures. Just be sure it is constant. But most tropical fish requires 72-78F (some Amazon and Southeast Asian species can thrive up to 82F). A heater is definitely a must.
