A Friend

A friend is understanding,
a person who is caring;
accepts you for who you are,
didn’t judge you for what you are.

A friend is always helpful,
that makes one person hopeful.
A person who keep secrets,
and also tell her secrets.

A friend is always around,
that can make one’s life go round.
A person who’ll support you,
in anything that you’ll do.

Friend is a loving person,
that goes with you in prison.
A friend will always be a friend,
no matter what happened.

Galit. Poot. Kalungkutan.
Kibit-balikat akong kunwaring walang nararamdaman.

I submitted this poem for my freshman English lit class which I immediately wrote after finding out that the classmate I was jonesing on had a boyfriend. The painful part is that I only learned about this “secret” on the night of her debut, at the time when I was about to fess up and promise her the world. Reading it now, it pains me to admit that I had it in me to create something terribly silly and mushy.

We were required to read our literary creations in front of the class, and so, when my turn came, I read mine with a slight crack in my voice (which elicited laughter from the class). It was only after my dear classmate walked out misty-eyed that all of them realized the poem was as personal as it got.





Starless Night

From under the shadows on your eighteenth night
I watched you groove against the moon's pale light
Your brown hair flowing, your long dress white
Your smile like candy, on that starless night

In my mind's eye I saw you and me
Caught up in a bliss so wild, so free
We touched each other, my hands to thee
As we gazed at tomorrow, over a recurring sea

But when dreams end, reality always appears
When happiness does cease, pain slowly peers
A concealed knowledge about you I did overhear
And everything crumbled to a silent stream of tears

And there I stood alone with no one beside
The music and noise of emotions have died
The darkness kissed me and dragged me into its tide
And hugged my soul gently, on that starless night

Marami rito dapat magpasa ng libro on poetry writing. Sinabi nang lahat ang message. Wala nang itinago. Mga tula na gumagana lang sa literal level. Masyadong nagpapalalim kaya wala nang naisulat na konkretong imahe at sitwasyon. Mga prosa na isinulat lang sa stanza form. Cliche. Nagpilit magtugma. Mga mukhang napatambay nang matagal sa Hallmark greeting card section ng National Bookstore.

Look for LITTLE WORKSHOPS, LITTLE CRITIQUES by Leoncio P. Deriada, Palanca Hall of Famer. It is a very helpful book for aspiring poets. Marami kayo matututunan. Grounded on theory and practice.

Guys, my name is James Leyte. I am an amateur singer/songwriter and I'm glad to let you know that I'm one of the 14 finalists to our country's first-ever Philippine Popular Music Festival. I am posting this to formally request your support for my song as well as to bring back the power of OPM(Original Pinoy Music).

"How many great Filipino songwriters does an everyday Filipino know?

Chances are they only know a few. We are a culture enamored by glitz, glitter and glamour of the center stage. Thus, the performers often get the full glory of the spotlight. Cast to the shadows is the artistry of the songwriters and composers. The performers have been up there for quite a while. It’s about time we bring back the limelight to the songwriters and composers.

“The First Philippine Popular Music Festival” is a songwriting competition open to all amateur and professional composers who are Filipinos or of Filipino descent residing in the Philippines. The competition not only aims to celebrate the talent of Filipino songwriting, but to glorify the contributions of songwriters and composers to the Filipino music industry.

Orchestrating the competition is no other than Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, the country’s prominent songwriter, musician, academic, and the Festival’s Executive Director. Co-presented by the country’s top companies like Maynilad, Meralco, SMART, Sun, PLDT, TV5 and PICC, “Mr. C” plans to bring together the Filipino talents into one grand event.

Asymptote

When leaves have fallen to the ground,
in heavy crowds I walk around.
A once sturdy, mighty wood.
Have aged and died for as it should.
Amid the walk I sat alone,
while different people pass along.
Some opt to stay or just walk by,
and left behind the reasons why.
Beneath the scorching afternoon,
I wait for waning of the moon.
And all the while, it’s worth the wait,
for love have changed a former hate.

The dusk have turned the day to night.
And from the dark, a blinding light.
I walk a straight path ‘long the curve,
In search for what I do deserve.
I walk ahead, despite the doom.
Accepting things do turn to gloom.
Like an asymptote, it goes to loom;
The ache at last have gone to soon.

Feelings and my Cracked Skull


With your warm and tender hands, you pound my head using your hammer and chisel.
I took each blow with loving eyes. Cracks appear and well, you just go on.
Another whack, another crack.
Just a few more and cold metal will stab me.
Then with strength and persistence it drew the final blow.
Open hole inside my skull, stars, planes and furniture,
Even the very hands with the hammer and chisel,
All went deep inside. Flowed in me, consumed by my head... vacuity followed.

The pain, the agony I felt. But I still look at you the same.
It must be true though, the connection between the heart and mind.
And I can do nothing more but shed those tears I kept.
