^harbour centre applied to join the PBA years back if i remember correctly. i forgot the reason bakit na reject yung application nila. harbor is owned by mikee romero.
^ they are not shutting their pba doors pero at this moment, busy pa sila sa abl via the philippine patriots. i know they have the money pero i don't know if they have the money to stay in the long run.
kahit sino pwede mag-PBA. basta't may pera. ayaw naman siguro natin ng isa pang Air21 di ba?![]()
12 to 14 teams
at the economic condition of the country parang sobrang konti ng kayang mag-PBA. parang wala akong faith kina mikee romero and phoenix petroleum. kung SM sana pero they'll stick it out with NU. (for some reason i'd reckon it'll be easier to win in the PBA vs UAAP, primarily to drafts, trades, and no eligibility rules except for citizenship.)
interesting nga kung mag-expand up to 12-14 teams. madami na nga ang more than 10. compare natin sa japanese baseball na may 12 teams, chinese football na may 16 teams, S.League with 13, malaysian football with 14, etc. those are economic powerhouses (SG and MY are smaller but is better managed than PH.)
so ideally, the PBA is good at 10 teams, just kill off one or both of the lina franchises, sell one of the SMC and/or MVP teams to a company that can spend, then think about expansion.
why would SM join the PBA only to be cheated by SMC?
If the PBA expands, the league should prioritize new and fully independent teams. Not a new team under one giant company.
Phoenix Petroleum would have been a nice addition but SMC blocked its entry.![]()
Cebuana-Lhuillier, long overdue na dapat ma consider nila playing in the pro league.
Mikee Romero tried to buy Burger King but negotiations between him and the Linas collapsed.
Mikee also tried to buy Barako Bull but he found the team's quality of players to be very poor. I remember, he got Harbour to sponsor the Energy and even placed the Harbour logo on the back of the players' jerseys.
i don't think mikee romero can run a PBA team for good. ewan ko nga kung yung gaya ng ROS kaya eh. kahit sina lhuilier & phoenix. or baka mataas lang ang standards ko![]()
Agree with DEE. While there's no denying Mikee Romero's wealth, he won't be able to run a full-time basketball team needing a P100M annual budget. He was able to run Harbour Center in the PBL because the cost wasn't that significant. He is running the Philippine Patriots but the one spending for this is Air Asia. When he tried joining the PBA a couple of years ago, he tried to tie up with MVP and Bert Lina at Burger King but this didn't last.
At Harbour Center, MVP wanted to buy out Romero's shares in the company but the latter balked. MVP, whose preference is to have complete control over his companies, decided to back out from this arrangement. Had a tieup emerged, MVP and Romero would have worked hand in hand in bringing Harbour Center to the PBA.
Jay, too bad. Mikee Romero had always wanted to form a PBA team but the PBA is a different thing compared to the other leagues Romero has joined.
Bad and good actually. Mikee Romero would have been the local version of Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks in the PBA, if ever. A very vocal and opinionated manager who is hands-on when handling his team. Two perspectives would have been presented - it can either be good or bad for the league.
SMC became HC's partner in the MNH project. MR knows that he doesnt have the liquidty to maintain a PBA team. Php 100 Million per year means Php 1 Billion for 10 years...
ICT is now sa far away than HC...
kaya nga dapat yung maraming pera ng company ang madagdag, hindi yung kung sino sino lang basta't masabi lang na nag-expand. parang magiging air21/barako din yan wala din.
ICTSI would be a nice option but I don't think Enrique Razon is interested. Of course, here's another potential company with FG interest but then, which company didn't flourish during the GMA Administration where FG didn't have a stake in?
Razon seems more bent on supporting other sports, particularly golf. There's a major tournament in the Philippines sponsored by ICTSI, and I believe they also supported the likes of golfers Frankie Minoza and Juvic Pagunsan.
And since ICTSI isn't exactly a consumber-based company, advertising mileage derived from the PBA may not be as relevant to them compared to other possible marketing endeavors.
