Post What's the Filipino word for "Hello"?

It can't be Hoy, 'cause Hoy is equivalent to Hey. That made me wonder.

    Mabuhay?

Language in many ways is diagnostic of cultural dimensions of communities. Hello is a positive greeting that acknowledges the presence of the other party. Our culture does not have a DIRECT translation because our culture is more personalistic.

Observe. Our greeting is "Kamusta ka?" - How are you? The greeting transcends acknowledgement and requires interaction. Ever wonder why "Saan ka pupunta?" is oftentimes used as a greeting? Our culture requires "chika" in lieu of a simple greeting.

As a parting shot, what is the DIRECT equivalent of the word HONESTY in Pilipino? You will be surprised with the answer.

The root word "Tapat" is normally associated with LOYALTY. (i.e Tapat sa kanyang tungkulin).

"Matapat" on the other hand is directly asociated with TRUTHFULNESS.

"Katapatan" can be a substitute for HONESTY (i.e buong katapatan) but its root word was not really conceived as a direct match for it.

Katapatan probably evolved from the original virtue of LOYALTY. This might imply that we had a concept of loyalty BEFORE we had a concept of HONESTY.

    What do you think?

Here are some interesting definitions from http://www.foreignword.com/cgi-bin/e...atan&B1=Search

katapatan = n. cordiality; fidelity; loyalty
tapat = adj. candid; adv. constant; n. front; honest; just; steady; true; truthful

Honest as an ADJECTIVE has this meaning = tapat; di-sinungaling; matapat; di-nagdaraya

Honesty as a NOUN has no DIRECT translation. Some Pilipino anthopologist say this is significant because while we use "tapat" to describe an honest individual, our NOUN for it (Katapatan) means LOYALTY.

The signifance according to them is that this partly explains why nepotism and utang ng loob plays a big part in our culture.

    Sorry.. back to HELLO

I believe there is no DIRECT translation of this word in (formal) Pilipino. Closest "evolved" word is helo as drakesnake pointed out.
