GMA News TV: TITSER (Lovi Poe)

Kapuso Premier Drama Actress Lovi Poe topbills GMA News TV’s original series, TITSER

Following the critical and ratings success of its original series on good governance, BAYAN KO, GMA News TV launches a groundbreaking new series entitled TITSER, which discusses issues in Philippine education.

TITSER will be the first television project of character actress Lovi Poe upon signing a new, three-year exclusive contract with GMA. She plays the lead Michelle in the series, a high school valedictorian from a poor barrio school who dreams of becoming a teacher, but whose only option after graduation is to work as a housemaid. Her best friend Rosa is the class salutatorian who ends up a single mother. Fate, tragedy and the sheer dedication of Michelle and Rosa to finish their schooling lead to unexpected twists in this compelling series.

TITSER tells the stories of these girls as it tackles problems in education: lack of books and chairs and classrooms, corruption in the procurement process, the high dropout rate and the fact that majority of the Philippine population has only reached a high school level, or less, of education.

TITSER is written by Bayan Ko creator Nessa Valdellon and directed by Dr. Alvin Yapan, who also heads the Filipino Department at the Ateneo de Manila University. The series was inspired by Sandra Aguinaldo's I-Witness documentary Iskul Ko No. 1 about an award-winning elementary schoolteacher who put herself through college by working as a househelper.

GMA News TV is producing this series in the hope that viewers start to take a more serious look at our education problems and perhaps begin sending more impoverished children all the way through college.

The 10-part original drama series TITSER will air Sunday nights at 7:15 p.m. from August 4 to October 6, only on GMA News TV.

Lovi Poe, Agot Isidro and Mara Lopez lead the cast of GMA NEWS TV's 'TITSER'

Casting for GMA News TV's female-dominated series TITSER - topbilled by multi-awarded character actress Lovi Poe - is now complete. Lovi is joined by singer-actress Agot Isidro and by indie film darling Mara Lopez in the new series, which follows on the heels of GMA News TV's hugely successful Bayan Ko.

Lovi plays Michelle in TITSER: a poverty stricken high school girl who dreams of becoming a teacher, but whose only option after graduation is to work as a housemaid. Mara Lopez plays Rosa - Michelle's best friend and toughest competitor, who ends up a single mother. The two girls struggle against fate and financial limitations to reach their goal of finishing school. Their mentor and inspiration is Teacher Sandra, portrayed by Agot Isidro, who leads her own fight against a corrupt principal.

Actors Gardo Versoza, Irma Adlawan, Carl Guevarra and Rocco Nacino will also be starring in the series - which will be shot on location in Boso Boso, Antipolo starting this weekend.

TITSER is directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker and head of the Ateneo Filipino Department Alvin Yapan and written by Bayan Ko's creator Nessa Valdellon. It will be filmed on high definition and go through the color grading process.

TITSER begins airing Sunday, August 4 on GMA News TV Channel 11 - but already, production is in full swing.

“The truth is, this is the most difficult role I have ever portrayed.

    Titser preem on GMA

From left: Mara Lopez, Agot Isidro and Lovi Poe

MANILA, Philippines - GMA News TV hopes to be a vehicle of change through Titser, a heartwarming tale of hope and resilience amid the grit and grime of a handicapped society.

Led by Lovi Poe, Titser depicts the grave ills of the Philippine education system via the everyday stories of barrio teachers and students. Joining Lovi in the 10-part series are Mara Lopez, Agot Isidro, Irma Adlawan, Gardo Versoza, Arnel Ignacio and Rocco Nacino together with Kapuso stars Carl Guevarra and Mikael Daez.

Titser follows the stories of best friends, Michelle and Rosa. Michelle, portrayed by Lovi, is a high school valedictorian from a poor barrio school who dreams of becoming a teacher, but whose only option after graduation is to work as a housemaid. Her best friend Rosa, played by Mara, is the class salutatorian who ends up as a single mother. The two girls struggle against fate and financial limitations to reach their goal of finishing school. Their mentor and inspiration is Teacher Sandra, portrayed by Agot, who leads her own fight against a corrupt principal played by Irma.

Titser is penned by Bayan Ko creator Nessa Valdellon with direction by Dr. Alvin Yapan, who also heads the Filipino Department of the Ateneo de Manila University. The series was inspired by Sandra Aguinaldo’s I-Witness documentary Iskul Ko No. 1 which is about an award-winning elementary schoolteacher who put herself through college by working as a house helper.

The 10-part original drama series Titser airs Sunday nights at 7:15 beginning tomorrow.

    ‘Titser’ commands attention
    by Nestor U. Torre

POE. Proves that she doesn’t have to flit and flirt to keep viewers interested.

At the outset, we should admit that, in general, Lovi Poe’s characterizations to date haven’t impressed us enough to stop the presses and sing her praises. Especially when she plays it sophisticated and sexy, we’re left unmoved by her so-called genetic inheritance in performing, and wish that she stops contenting herself with appearances, and goes for the right stuff.

Well, we’re belatedly getting what we want in Lovi’s latest TV portrayal in “Titser,” telecast Sundays on the GMA News Channel, as a high-school girl who aspires to be a teacher despite her family’s lack of resources and encouragement.

The young actress doesn’t have to play it sophisticated and sensuous, so she does much better than in most of her previous characterizations. It’s about time!

The new series is a fitting follow up to the channel’s critical hit last year, a drama series on corruption in which Rocco Nacino finally came into his own as an actor. This time around, it’s Lovi who’s proving that she doesn’t have to flit and flirt to keep viewers interested.

    Good impression

Aside from Lovi’s natural and felt portrayal, “Titser” also benefits from Agot Isidro’s participation as the caring mentor who inspires her top student to want to become a good teacher like her.

Some of Lovi’s friends and classmates also come across as believable characters, and the teen actor who portrays the title character’s younger brother makes a particularly good impression, because he effectively vivifies the sad plight of younger siblings who have to stop studying because their parents can afford to send only one child to school.

In the case of Lovi’s character, her education is slated to end right after she graduates from high school, because her folks need her to make money right away by going to the big city to work as a maid, like her older sister.

This cruel abridgement of her dream to go to college hurts her to the depth of her being, so she strives hard to get a college scholarship. Naturally, that’s what her favorite mentor wants for her, as well.

But, they have to contend with the numerous “realities” that conspire to foil impoverished youth’s advancement — and the empathetic viewer roots for them all the way.

    Realities

On the debit side, “Titser” takes too much time establishing its dramatic premises. Once it gets the introductory stuff out of the way, however, it commands attention as it dramatizes different realities related to the country’s educational woes.

Teachers are shown making pin money off their helpless pupils, students cheat on government placement exams, parents resist teachers’ efforts to keep their best students in school, and some young pupils are even shown risking getting drowned just so they can attend their classes!

It’s a saddening and maddening state of affairs all round, so the viewer is kept on full empathy mode from one telecast to the next.

Even more horrors are about to assault Lovi and her classmates in subsequent telecasts, including (the series’ trailer warns) a principal without principles!

So, fret and suffer along with the show’s young protagonists, who have to resort to heroic means to get the education that so many other, better-off youths lazily take for granted.
