MARIAN: “No choice siya! Kailangang sundin niya, gusto ko ito. No choice siya.”

MARIAN: "To be honest, hindi na.

    [video=youtube;qR3sZpvSL-E]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR3sZpvSL-E&feature=relmfu

JO-ANN: The thing, Marian, kasi, we’ve interviewed you sa YES!. And we all fell in love with you talaga, walang biro. Can you [explain]…?

“Parang lahat, 'Okay, this is me, ‘eto yung gusto n’yong makita.’

Sabi nga, I’m not a robot.”

    Her own Woman

Long-sleeve chiffon dress with sleeve opening by Karimadon

There seemed to be a strained hushed air pervading the studios for the Karimadon shoot. There was none of the mood music—neither the energetic beat nor the piped-in chill variety—heard during such production projects. People were rushing between work stations and the set for the next set of photos to be taken. I couldn’t help thinking that rumors of moody and diva-ish behavior must be true about local soap star and movie actress Marian Rivera, the sole endorser behind the 33-year-old clothing line. But that’s probably because I arrived in the set midway into the photo shoot.

As soon as Marian stepped out of the dressing room for the next layout’s shoot, the energy picked up and my initial impression quickly dissolved, making me realize how I must have fallen into a cliché scenario of hastily jumping into a conclusion.

What I initially perceived as a tense atmosphere was the team’s systematic and vigilant prepping for the lined-up shot lists, knowing how quickly Marian would take for each outfit change, so the usual long break between layouts didn’t apply to this production. What appeared as speaking in hushed tones were oohs and aahs and unanimous admiration for her beauty and professionalism. And the long, five-set production work at the studio I braced myself to wait through for my turn to interview the GMA star lasted a total of a little over an hour, with every member of the team happy with the results, including Marian, who seemed the least pleased for a while—it turned out to be the actress in her “focused mode.”

Makeup artist Krist Bansuelo, who has worked several times with the actress, shares, “She likes to work fast and does not waste any time. Even withmakeup and hair, she does not like it when she’s being made up too long.”

“Except sa shoot where I’m required to be serious, I’m usually makulit at masaya,” Marian explains after the shoot, now smiling, giving a clear idea why she has captured the admiration of a multitude of male and female fans that cross social and age levels. From the coy sophisticate required for the last set of photos, Marian transforms into an impish and charming young woman, almost as easily and quickly as she dressed down to her own outfit. That efficiency, according to stylist Sidney Yap, kept him on his toes the entire shoot. The actress would step into the dressing room unassisted and out dressed in no time.

Wearing a more casual dress, she sits comfortably, for Krist to tone down her makeup.Even with less enhancements on, one can see how striking her features are, and how very blessed at the right places her diminutive frame is. Josie Go, Karimadon owner shares why she had chosen Marian and decided to keep her on as their endorser, “She’s very pretty, I suppose that’s a given; but more than that we like how Marian is the epitome of the modern woman. She’s very transparent, what you see is what you get. She’s caring and kind but she fights for her rights. Karimadon celebrates this kind of woman—modern, confident, and smart.”

Josie recalls, “I first saw Marian Rivera on television, at that time she was still starting out. Her stylist approached us and asked if we can dress her up. We didn’t think twice about agreeing to dress her up even if she was new—we had a feeling she had it in her to make it big, and she did! True enough, we’ve had her as our endorser for five years now.”
The feeling turns out to be mutual. “Because I started out as a commercial and ramp model, I had clothes provided by Props, Particles, and then even before Marimar (the soap that launched her to star status), Karimadon,” says Marian. “They have always sponsored my outfits. I’m loyal to those who trusted me since before. Even off-cam, I like their clothes because the style suits my personality.”

Loyalty and humility are just two of the values she has learned to hold on to fiercely, no matter how far she has reached in her career. She’s still represented by Popoy Caritativo, the same manager she’s had since she was discovered by [EAT Bulaga producer and TV executive] Tony Tuviera, still drives herself around—rarely needing a chauffeur, and lives independently.

Marian (Gracia, not Rivera, in real life) shares how, although she was born in Spain, she’s lived with her mom since the marriage with her Spanish father ended when she was two. “I was raised by my grandmother, a Lola’s Girl. So siyempre, pampered ako,” she says with a smile. After graduating with a degree in Psychology, she asked to live independently. “I started everything in life at that point from scratch. So no allowance, no driver, no yaya, no assistant.”

“I enjoyed modeling. When I was given the break, I was game to try showbiz. At first, my goal was to take advantage of the opportunity to earn. After a while, I began to enjoy the work and now I’m still doing this because of my love for the craft,” Marian says. She’s been on television dramas and movies, she’s dabbled into co-hosting and dancing on variety shows (“I’ve always loved dancing!” she exclaims), and has had a couple of platinum CDs to her name. Right now, Marian’s work includes an adaptation of the Korean soap, Temptation of Wife and is working on the movies My Lady Boss and Kung Fu Divas. While she’s an exclusive GMA Network artist, she’s not limited to doing GMA Films.

“It’s been busy talaga. I work everyday and I’ve had no real rest for a year,” says Marian. And that makes one wonder less about how much she guards her off-cam time. She prefers to stay at home when possible, cooking (which she learned from her mother) and just recently, baking, which she discovered she could do it well. There’s also the time she spends with her boyfriend, actor Dingdong Dantes (with whom she starred in her first two teleseryes Marimar and Dyesebel), and her yearly visits to Madrid, Spain, to spend time with her father and the rest of her family. “It’s a happy place for me. In Madrid, I’m not a star. Once in a while, Filipinos would recognize me and approach me for a photo, but that’s it,” she shares. “I enjoy the bonding moments with my relatives, especially eating! They know I’m an actress, but apart from my stepmother, who follows my career on the ‘net, they have no idea about the celebrity life I have here.”

On the sets, she relishes relationships she’s formed with Temptation of Wife co-star Ayen Laurel (“One of the most caring friends I ever had”), and Darna co-stars Rita Avila (“She’s so sweet and supportive”) and Celia Rodriguez (“What a mentor!”). Outside of work, she remains close to the same barkada “since before showbiz.”

Like any other woman her age, Marian also loves shopping. However, knowing that its money hard earned, she shops wisely. “Overseas ako kung mag-shopping. Dito, pag may pagkakataon lang na may kailangan. I love bags and shoes, which I invest more into than in clothes. I am not an accessories lover but I do invest in real jewelry,” says Marian. “For beauty products—apart from Maxi Peel—100% beauty junkie ako. High school student pa lang ako, I knew na from Mama about the cleanser-toner-moisturizer regimen. After work, I remove my makeup right away. Actually, even before going home, sometimes while on the road, I already begin removing my makeup. I would rather invest in basic beauty products than in clothes and shoes. So I buy my own.”

This insistence on acquiring her own stuff is quickly attested by both Sidney and Krist, after Marian had left. “She asked about the cuff I provided for a spread. She happened to like it a lot. I told her, ‘Girl, sa’yo na yan. Keep it,” says Sidney. “She flatly refused, even sounding embarrassed. Later on I tried to give it through her assistant, but she had it returned.”

“That’s how she is,” Krist adds. “Marian always comes 15 minutes early, usually alone without an entourage, and brings her own stuff. She is not your typical showbiz star who greets or kisses everyone in the room. She’s actually shy, talking only to people she knows, hence being labeled a snob sometimes.”

So Marian’s found herself in this business, where stars are given the royal treatment. She revels in it but balks at anything that might spoil her being an independent woman. Ironic, but refreshing. While all set for a long day of shooting a new campaign, the Karimadon team is surprised but happy work is ending earlier than expected. “Our brand is best known for its fashion-forward, chic, and sophisticated clothes that provide value for money,” ends Josie. “While it is popular for its special occasions wear and cocktail dresses, it has now expanded to modern corporate work-to-play dresses—all designed for the modern Filipina.” They’ve obviously picked the right Filipina to represent them.

Sexy Talk with Marian Rivera by Ricky LO

    What is sexy to her?

“Ang sexy para sa akin, kahit anong klase ang isuot mo na wala kang ipinapakitang skin ay sexy ka.”

    With boyfriend Dingdong Dantes:

What do I find sexy in him? His eyes and his eyebrows!

    When does she feel sexy?

“When I’m in heels. You see, I’m fond of wearing flats, wala lang. But if I have to attend an event, I have to wear heels. I stand straight and that’s when I feel sexy.”

What part of her body does she consider the sexiest?

    “My butt, ayyyyy!!!”

And what part of a man’s body…Dingdong’s body…does she consider the sexiest?

“The shoulders. Iba ‘yung dating if a guy has broad shoulders. Macho ang dating para sa akin.”

    Sexiest book?

(Thinks hard) “Hindi ako mahilig magbasa ng books, eh.”

    Okay, sexiest magazine.

    “Siempre Cosmo. Everything is there.”

    Sexiest movie.

“Let me think.” (Thinks hard) “I can’t think of any. I rarely watch movies kasi, eh. If ever I do, I watch mostly cartoons.”

Marian Rivera Is The Only Kapuso Star In 2012 TRU Study Favorite Celebs Survey

According to “The Teen Research Unlimited (TRU) Study: 2012 Philippine Edition,” which was presented to the media on Wednesday, the 42-year-old Padilla is the favorite TV/movie star among Filipino teens, ages 12-19 years old.

Padilla is also tops among young Filipino adults, ages 20-24.

Abegail Barcelona, associate research director for the TRU study, noted that during the survey period of June-July 2011, Padilla was starring in the hit ABS-CBN primetime action series “Guns and Roses” with Bea Alonzo.

Award-winning actor Coco Martin, 30, debuted at No. 2 among both teens and young adults in the survey.

Barcelona attributed Martin’s high ranking to his hit ABS-CBN primetime drama series “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin.”

Kapamilya stars dominated the Top 5 favorite stars among Filipino teens and young adults.

Among teens, actress Kim Chiu and Angel Locsin tied for fourth place, while singer-actress Sarah Geronimo was at No. 5. Chiu didn’t place on the survey of young adults.

Actress Marian Rivera was the only non-ABS-CBN star on the list. Rivera was at No. 3 for both teens and young adults. (Source: ABS-CBN)
