GMA News TV: Bayan Ko (Starring Rocco Nacino, LJ Reyes, Pen Medina, Ping Medina)

Enter the fictional town of Lagros, where an idealistic new Mayor faces some very real problems.

Mayor Joseph Santiago, played by Rocco Nacino, discovers a bunch of wayward employees have turned the municipal hall into a boarding house and, worse, have been making under the table deals at every turn. His efforts to fight corruption – both petty and large scale - are blocked by a political dynasty led by Governor Antonio Rubio and Congressman Anton Rubio, played by father and son tandem Pen and Ping Medina.

Bayan Ko tackles serious matters with a touch of comedy -- and an unexpected romance -- but its primary goal is to bring political and social issues closer to the heart of regular viewers.

“We hope that through Bayan Ko, voters realize that good governance is not only possible but crucial to our progress and start to demand better performance from the officials they elect,” says News TV channel head and Bayan Ko creator Nessa Valdellon.

Bayan Ko, a groundbreaking television project and GMA News TV's 1st original series, is shot entirely on high definition and unlike most television dramas, goes through the color grading process. The six part series directed by Adolfo Alix Jr., airs Sundays at 6:30 PM starting March 10, only on Channel 11.

Significant series blows the lid off patronage politics
    by Nestor U. Torre

We’re SO happy that, with the elections fast approaching, some TV channels are giving viewer-voters pointers on how to choose the best and most deserving candidates.

All too often, however, the tips are perfunctory, cursory and shallow summaries of candidates’ “motherhood” promises, so they aren’t all that helpful.

Imagine our relief, therefore, when we watched the first telecast of the “political drama” series, “Bayan Ko,” on GMA News TV last week. Unlike other programs about politics that dispense mostly “motherhood” statements and advice, “Bayan Ko” has a well-researched script that is full of persuasive details about the realities of patronage politics and corruption, Pinoy-style.

    Emotions

We have watched other political dramas in the past, but most of them lose their edge and bite, and eventually focus on predictable melodrama and emotions for emotionalizing’s sake. Happily, it looks like “Bayan Ko” isn’t going to go down that desultory path.

Adolf Alix Jr.’s relevant and significant series blows the lid off local patronage politics by telling its story through the eyes of a principled young mayor (Rocco Nacino) who has to deal with all sorts of festering problems and anomalies on his first few months in office, but eventually succeeds in reforming the system.

He and his principled assistants have the toughest time contending with the province’s governor (Pen Medina), a past master at making a fortune while pretending to serve the people. Will the principled mayor be able to beat the corrupt system that “Gob” has put in place? We sure hope so!

More to the point, even if he does occasionally falter, his earnest odyssey will take him and the show’s viewers through the gamut of political excesses and malpractices that make reforms on the local scene so difficult to effect.

Aside from the series’ eminently believable scripting and direction, “Bayan Ko” boasts of memorable and committed portrayals by Nacino, Medina, LJ Reyes and other gifted players.

They don’t do star turns but play their characters with acute believability, so viewers empathize fully with them.

    Scenes

Indeed, when we were watching their scenes at home, we would sometimes ask, “How would these scenes play out if so-and-so (a popular star) did them?” — And, most of the time, we concluded that they would have come off as hokey and ickily melodramatic.

So, the fact that “Bayan Ko” has no big stars isn’t a liability, it can even be an advantage, because it gives us, not self-consciously “stellar” performances, but acutely believable portrayals that make the series — the best TV drama in town!

In fact, “Bayan Ko” is so good that we urge GMA to also telecast it on GMA 7, so many more viewer-voters can benefit from its insightful and convincing depiction of elections and politics, Philippine-style!

GMA News TV: Bayan Ko (Starring Rocco Nacino)

Bayan Ko (My Country) is a Filipino political drama created by Nessa Valdellon and produced by Eliza Zamora Solis for GMA News and Public Affairs intended for 2013 National Election. The six-part series premiered on March 10, 2013, airs every Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. on GMA News TV. It is written by Rodolfo Vera and directed by Adolfo Alix, Jr.

Bayan Ko second episode, 'Corruption,' airs on March 17

    Bayan Ko
    Episode 2: Corruption
    Airing date: March 17, 2013

Governor Antonio Rubio, the face of corruption in GMA News TV’s political drama Bayan Ko.

What lies behind Mayor Joseph Santiago’s passion for public service?

In the sophomore episode of Bayan Ko, we discover that the Mayor, played by Rocco Nacino, saw his father murdered on the streets of Lagros. The father was a journalist and newspaper publisher who exposed wrongdoings in the province.

The episode also digs deeper into the psyche of Governor Antonio Rubio, powerfully brought to life by actor Pen Medina, who has found creative ways to earn from every local government project – whether road and bridge construction or furniture supplies in the capitol.

This episode of Bayan Ko features veteran actor Bembol Roco as Joseph’s slain father. Also guesting in the episode is Phil. Center for Investigative Journalism multi-media desk Ed Lingao.

Bayan Ko launched last week to excellent reviews and praise throughout social media. Commended for its film-like quality, Bayan Ko was shot on high definition Canon cameras and is the first GMA News TV program to go through the color grading process.

Bayan Ko was directed by multi-awarded independent film director Adolfo Alix Jr. and color graded by Outpost Inc.

Catch the corruption episode this Sunday at 6:30 PM only on GMA News TV Channel 11.

Hope this gets high ratings kasi very well acted, may magandang script and socially relevant ito. This early, I can say na I think this is the best series in the Philippines for years if not ever.

    congrats to Direk Adolf Alix
congrats to the whole cast and crew
and of course to the writers of this amazing mini series

sana gumawa rin ng soap si Direk Adolf sa GMA
