Kahit ano man ang end result ng game, sana both teams would dish out a good match for all of us. I'm sure hindi naman din papayag si Jen Reyes and Cai Nepomuceno to finish their last playing year without a good fight. And siyempre, malakas din ang willpower ni Dindin Santiago. So I think it will be a good match tomorrow. And siyempre, Araneta yan, so excited sila lahat maglaro.

    DLSU (1) vs. NU (4)

Now looking at this pairing, many people will immediately say it should be a cakewalk for the Lady Spikers. They have, after all, defeated the Lady Bulldogs in their two meetings this season and have won thirteen consecutive matches. It should even be an exhibition of carnage for the team I recently coined the “New Legion of Doom.” Well, it may not be that easy to write-off the Francis Vicente charges after not only prevailing over UST in a playoff for the final berth, but also making its debut in Final Four for the very first time in school history. In fact, its best showing was a fifth place finish in Season 73, primarily due to the exploits of spiking sensation Vec Mangui. NU is coming off a forgettable Season 74 when it could only churn out two victories—both at the expense of the hapless University of the Philippines. So their 8-6 card this season marks one of the biggest turnarounds in league history, and with it comes the Lady Bulldogs’ first-ever semi-final appearance. In short, NU is on a high and are extremely pumped. Will it somehow catapult them to upset the reigning title-holders?

NU Advantages: Pound for pound, NU can contend against DLSU. Nepomuceno has the arsenal to cancel out the offense of MVP Abigail Maraño. Developing Myla Pablo can also cancel out the production of Michele Gumabao. The same thing can almost be said about Siemen Dadang and Ara Galang. Mika Esperanza and Ivy Perez have practically the same experience points. Both coaches are tough perfectionists. This now leaves the two positions where the Lady Bulldogs have a decisive edge: Center and Libero. Santiago is not only the league’s second best scorer but is also one of the few centers out there who is taller and clearly more experienced than DLSU’s net patroller Mika Reyes. Jen Reyes and Melissa Gohing have the same number of playing years under their belt—both Liberos have no more eligibility after this season—but Jen is clearly the more celebrated of the two; in terms of numbers and in terms of magnitude. If the NU offense can make use of Din-Din’s edge over Yeye in the frontline and can utilize the reception prowess of Jen to the hilt, the Lady Spikers may just have their hands full like last January 19th when NU almost handed DLSU its second loss of the season.

DLSU Advantages: Here’s the first one: just show up. These ladies from Taft are not the defending champions for nothing. Yes, NU gave them a major scare in the second round, but DLSU learned so much from that near disaster that after that, nothing has even been close—including a straight sets shellacking of Ateneo. The New Legion of Doom strikes fear in the opposition by merely showing up. They’ve earned it. Second one: play DLSU volleyball. With Galang the only member of the squad among the league’s scoring leaders, obviously the Lady Spikers have been getting their victories via innovative means. Defense has been the true key. Mika Reyes, Gumabao and Wensh Tiu have shared the frontline in the DLSU alignment so many times that their timing has been almost flawless. Maraño and Galang have also improved on their floor defense immensely this season and Gohing—although not usually compared to Jen Reyes—has actually been quite a force. Esperanza—because of her length—has also registered a few block points of her own. I’m not even bringing up DLSU’s superior bench. On paper, it seems like NU can match DLSU pound for pound, but the great Ron Jacobs once said: “…games are not won on paper.” I said this before and I’ll say it again: La Salle will never lose anymore this season. The New Legion of Doom is built to destroy.

    Forecast: DLSU in straight sets

Lady Spikers vs Lady Bulldogs Final Four Primer

By: Ivan Angelo L. de Lara

Championship experience vs. Firepower. Upholding glory vs. writing history.

All these come into play as the defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers and the National University Lady Bulldogs dispute one of the Finals seats in UAAP Women’s Volleyball tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.

Fresh from a 25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 victory to oust traditional powerhouse University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, the Lady Bulldogs get entangled with another school rich in winning history.

“La Salle is a powerful team, but NU is powerful too,” said NU mentor Francis Vicente.

The Lady Spikers, meanwhile, have steamrolled over the competition to notch the first seed after the eliminations and a twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four.

In their first round encounter, the Taft-based squad proved to be too tough for their counterparts from Bustillos whom they beat handily, 25-12, 25-17, 25-19. Michele Gumabao paced the Lady Spikers with her 10 points, while Dindin Santiago scored game-high 12 markers for the Lady Bulldogs albeit for a losing cause.

The second round meeting, however, proved to be a more challenging outing for the Lady Spikers. Staring at a 1-2 set deficit, they had to dig deep into their championship experience to carve out a 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-8 victory.

The Lady Bulldogs kept up with the Lady Spikers on all scoring fronts in that game, but gave away 41 free points on their errors. The Lady Spikers, on the other hand, only had 27.

“Problema talaga namin ‘yung errors,” Vicente said. “Kailangan matuto sila (Lady Bulldogs) na magcompensate sa kakulangan nila.

The Lady Spikers are looking to score a three-peat in women’s volleyball it last achieved in Season 68. Coach Ramil de Jesus is expected to bank on reigning MVP Abi Maraño, Ara Galang, Mika Reyes, Gumabao, and a solid bench to carry the torch for DLSU.

The Lady Spikers are the league’s leaders in blocking, serving, digging, and setting. Maraño and Reyes are the top two best blockers, while Galang is the seventh best scorer in the tournament.

“We are still working to be ready for another championship,” Maraño said. “We cannot be complacent. We work day by day.”

The Lady Bulldogs, on the other hand, is riding on the historic feat of reaching the Final Four for the first time—the culmination of the years of building up a team which has languished in the cellar of the standings in seasons past.

Vicente is expected to turn to Santiago, Cai Nepomuceno, Myla Pablo, and rookie Aiko Urdas to help NU have a crack at the title it last won in 1957. His wards are the tournament’s best spiking and receiving squad. Pablo is the tournament’s most efficient attacker, while Jen Reyes has been the most effective libero.

They need all the support they can get!

Kung yung ADU-ADMU, battle of superb floor defense. Eto, battle of superb spiking/blocking. Can't wait for a great volleyball tomorrow.

How sure ka naman na admu and adu fans will root for NU and not la salle?

It depends din sa players. La salle is tough, physically and mentally

I don't think so. Mas marami ang Ateneo crowd nung DLSU-ADMU Rd1 and ADMU got the first 2 sets. Sobrang lakas ng sigawan ng ADMU crowd and DLSU crowd was silenced after the 2nd set but DLSU came back and eventually won the game.

DLSU has tougher mindset compared to ANY other teams.

the la salle girls are battle-tested. they're not gonna easily succumb to a crowd cheering against them. unless, of course, the opposing crowd storms them. talagang ibang usapan na yon. i'd be shït scared too!!!

LOL. Grow a brain or two. I like her and will always like her. Deal with it. You're intelligence level will not fathom the logic that goes behind why I don't like NU's recruitment process.

DLSU's got it player by player. Play by play. Composure when push comes to shove. That's all that there's to it.

Sorry, unlike you, my life does not revolve around UAAP. I watch and follow it but I have other things to do as well. Kayo?

    DLSU in 5 hard-fought sets!

    POG: Galang.

    ANIMO
