NU whips Ateneo; UST scores in Shakey’s V-L

TENACIOUS on attack and solid on defense, National U moved closer to a semifinal berth with a 25-15, 25-12, 26-24 thrashing of powerhouse Ateneo yesterday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 First Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Bulldogs turned what was expected to be a tight duel between the tournament’s two unbeaten teams into a rout with Dindin Santiago and Myla Pablo sparkling on both ends of the floor.

University of Santo Tomas also closed in on a semifinal spot after a 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 15-7 triumph over Adamson.

Maika Ortiz starred in the fifth set with back-to-back power hits that enabled the Tigresses to pull away and improve to 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

With the victories, the Lady Bulldogs and Tigresses also shut the semifinal door on San Sebastian and Arellano U, which dropped two games each in the quarterfinal round.

Ateneo and Adamson finished the quarterfinals with 2-1 records, but remain in a good position to reach the Final Four.

Santiago wound up with only nine points, but her towering presence on the net gave the Lady Eagles all sorts of problems. By the time the Lady Eagles found their groove, the Lady Bulldogs were ahead by two sets.

NU looked in trouble of losing the third set after Bekimon Daqus powered home back-to-back hits to put Ateneo at set point. But Santiago responded with a couple of smashes, before Aika Rudas sealed the victory with a booming service ace.

Pablo led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points, including two off blocks, while Urdas matched Santiago’s output with nine.

What made the win more remarkable for the Lady Bulldogs was the way they neutralized the Lady Eagles’ attack. Despite the presence of Alyssa Valdez, the Lady Eagles were held to just 18 attack points out of 90 attempts.

The Tigresses nearly squandered a two-set advantage before steadying themselves in the fifth set, behind Ortiz’s heroics. Ortiz finished with 17 points.

“We lost our focus, but it’s a good thing we were able to recover in the fifth,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.

    NU dominates Ateneo in V-League

MANILA, Philippines — National University blanked Ateneo, 25-15, 25-12, 26-24, Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 First Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Bulldogs hardly broke a sweat in snapping the Lady Eagles’ six-game winning streak thanks to their strong start.

Myla Pablo led the way for NU with 13 points while Aiko Urdas tallied 10 points.

Defense set the tone for the Lady Bulldogs as they limited the Lady Eagles’ top scorers Alyssa Valdez and Bekimon Daqus to just eight points apiece.

MANILA, Philippines -- Myla Pablo sizzed as the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 25-15, 25-12, 26-24 win over Ateneo de Manila University before more than 7, 000 roaring fans in the 10th Shakey's V-League First Conference quarterfinals Sunday at The Arena.

UAAP Best Attacker Pablo led the Lady Bulldogs’ onslaught, tallying 13 points while UAAP Rookie of the Year Aiko Urdas added 10.

NU, which drew 9 markers apiece from the towering duo of sisters Dindin and Jaja Santiago, was solid with their floor defense to take the fight out from the Lady Eagles early on.

“We’re happy because this is a big win. We beat Ateneo and I told the girls to just enjoy the game and let’s give our best,” quipped new NU coach Edjet Mabbayad, who took over from the coaching reins from coach Francis Vicente.

Behind guest player Rachel Ann Daquis, Ateneo zoomed to a 10-6 lead in the third set but a series of errors from Alyssa Valdez, Mae Tajima and Marge Tejada cost them the game.

Daquis pushed the Lady Eagles to set point in the third, 24-23 before Pablo, Santiago and Urdas took turns in closing the match with three consecutive points that ultimately broke the hearts of the legions of Ateneo fans.

“Rubie (De Leon), our setter did a good job in setting her teammates and our service was pretty good,” added Mabbayad, a former FEU spiker.

No Ateneo volleybelle was able to score in double-digits as Daquis paced the team with her 8 points.

Valdez, meanwhile, was held to a sordid 8-point performance for the Lady Eagles who slid to a 2-1 record. - Rappler.com

Sorry, di ko na mapigilan *** sarili ko to post some clarifications here about the BOO-ING scenario...
First, the ateneo crowd first booed because of the wrong call of the lineman na pinaboran ng referee.
Second, yes, the ateneo crowd booed the NU players na nagse-serve after nung wrong call, however, it is not fair din na sabihin na *** ateneo crowd lang ang nang-boo ng players because NU crowd did the same sa Ateneo players na nagse-serve. (I, as a crowd did not like it na pati players eh nadamay)

(OT) At the end of the game, Aly, Jaja, and Dindin hugged, teased, and talked to each other. It only shows na friends sila kahit ano pang result nung game kaya sana wag na natin idamay *** friendship ng mga players.

Issue pa ba pag-boo? Hindi na kayo nasanay eh gawain na talaga nila yan

A bit late but I would like to congratulate NU, UST, Adamson and Ateneo for such successful games yesterday. It's safe to say that any of these 4 UAAP teams will be paired in the Finals (and the battle for 3rd). With what I saw yesterday, I am sure a lot of other first time spectators of the game will really love to support volleyball... It's what's important here in Vleague - that supporters and fans keep on supporting the teams and new followers will be captured due to the quality of games that the players showed.

Btw, I guess in sports, you cannot dictate the crowd of how they should respond. People are different, and their passion are of varying intensities. You sure wouldn't want to watch a volleyball or basketball game/s with an indifferent crowd. Or if you don't want to hear boo-ing or noisy reactions, better go to a religious convention or go to a spiritual retreat. But this is sports.

Again a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the Shakey's V-league. I'm looking forward for more successful games ahead. Congratulations also to the supporters of V-league, alam ko nanalo o natalo man ang team na sinuportahan natin - ang mahalaga eh nag-enjoy tayo na nakita sila maglaro at hindi nila pinagdadamot ang talento nila satin

Actually nagbang-bang pa din siya pero once ko lang nakita throughout the game and it was during the 2nd set...

Anyway, let's not make this a big issue as I've said pareho lang naman na ginawa yun nung fans of both teams and FOR ME as an spectator, I think mas nakadagdag ng excitement yun pero sana kapag may bad calls na lang at wag na mga players...

BTW, congrats sa mga nanalong team at sa natalo na din kasi they gave the crowd very entertaining games... (Hoping for more 5-setter games)

Wow, pati Booing ginagawang issue?? Andyan na yang booing kahit noong hindi pa kayo ipinapanganak, sa basketball, boxing o kahit anong sports. Part lang yan ng laro at ibig sabihin people are really into the game.

It couLd have been acceptabLe if si BuaLee na ang GP ng ateneo from the start pero hindi eh.

The current Line-up can survive without BuaLee. Kung mataLo man, accept naLang na the opposing prepared better.
