Eat more, exercise less and still get your dream body

Don’t max out on pain: “‘No pain, no gain’ is the type of belief that can really go
against your goal,” says sports science specialist and Sexy Solutions
fitness consultant Edward Mendez. Photos by fernan nebres

We have always been warned that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. But this one, however unbelievable it may seem, is backed up by actual science –– you can eat more, exercise less and still get the body that you’ve always wanted. Whatever it is that you wish you had or didn’t have, you can get or get rid of it by simply understanding and giving exactly what your body needs to create it.

“Don’t get obsessed with the diet and workout. Get obsessed with the science,” says sports science specialist and Sexy Solutions fitness consultant Edward Mendez. If he were an app, he’d be the Instamotivator, because throughout our chat he just kept churning out gems like this –– words that deserve to be plastered on top of a good photo and regrammed 1,000 times for the fitness-, exercise- and diet-obsessed to see.

Edward is also a model and an actor, but his passion is nutrition and fitness. He has worked with various celebrities in achieving their fitness goals, including Vicki Belo and Cristalle Henares, Atom Henares, Lui Villaruz, Lorenzo Mara, Tim Yap and Raymond Gutierrez. What makes him a good motivator is that he is as passionate about talking about fitness as he is living it. You can ask him anything about diet and exercise and he will have a perfectly quotable response that he would always, later on, back up with science. It’s a gift that he makes good use of through his Twitter account, where he posts tips and trivia on fitness, as well as in his upcoming book, Your Dream Body Come True, which will be out later this year. His experience in training athletes and helping them recover from injuries while he was still in the States, as well as working with his father, has given him all the material he needs. Here, he works with patients undergoing treatment at Sexy Solutions and helps them achieve their goals through proper nutrition and exercise, on top of writing and taping his launching movie, which will also be out by the end of the year.

“The book is going to be released a month after my movie is released, hopefully this coming December. It’s my launching movie so might as well come out with a launching book. I had to get in shape for that movie, too. I found out last January that we had to start filming –– right after the holidays! Ninety-percent of the movie I don’t have a shirt on, so I had to do my own mini-transformation. I had only a month to prepare,” said Edward. “But I already have the understanding of the science, and the muscle memory that I had created from my past transformations made it very easy. The great thing is this can apply to everyone,” he added.

Fitness has been Edward’s passion since he was 14, when he first picked up the dumbbells. “My shallow motivation then was to impress the girls, I was being bullied because I was very skinny, I was always the weakest one in the gym. But when I discovered that it was really what I loved to do, I decided to take it more seriously,” he said. “When I was younger, I thought it was more about putting a lot of hours in the gym and eating less –– I didn’t have the knowledge. I had to unlearn everyone I’ve absorbed from magazines and I did have a lot of failures.” It is through these failures, a continuous process of trial and error, that he gained enough practical knowledge and experience to write Your Dream Body Come True. He said his first transformation was when he saw his abs for the first time: “I thought I would never see them, ever!” Since then fitness has been both a passion and obsession for Edward. Here he shares some of the myths, facts and tips that he’s encountered in his journey to his ideal physique –– some of them are explained in detail in his upcoming book. For now, he dishes out some food for thought –– non-fattening and easy-to-digest, just for you.

TAKE IT TAKE IT Ni Lolit Solis (Pilipino Star Ngayon) | Updated June 19, 2013

Martin bumati kina Regine at Ogie kahit katapat ang show

At katulad taun-taon, ang proceeds ng festival ay mapupunta sa ilang beneficiaries ng movie industry – The Movie Workers Welfare Fund (MOWELFUND), Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP), Motion Picture Anti-Piracy Council, Optical Media Board (OMB) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

“There is no doubt that Filipino imagination is boundless. It is unhindered and it flourishes through the good and through adversities. This is why a major cause for celebration is the addition of the MMFF New Wave Animation Category. We have a large pool of animators in the Philippines, both budding and world class.

“Sobrang challenging para sa akin ang first MMK episode ko and at the same time, it was a very exciting break for me. I’m thankful that my co-stars were very helpful”, sabi ni Julia.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT Ni Master Showman Kuya Germs (Pilipino Star Ngayon) | Updated June 19, 2013

Kaya naman pati love life niya maganda at masaya.

Be Careful With My Heart.

    Juday at Sam, nakakakilig!

    JUNE 19, 2013 WEDNESDAY

Wala siyang Jessica Soho joke at lalong walang rape joke.

    ***

    He should know his limitations.

Matalik palang magkaibigan sina Sam at John Prats, na alam nating boyfriend for a time ni Shaina.

For a time rin, nagkaroon ng hinala ang lahat na baka sina John at Shaina na ang magkatuluyan.

Bagama’t mga bata pa noon, they looked an ideal pair.

In fact, naging close as can be na si Shaina sa family ni John and vice-versa.

Obviously, that made John heartbroken and his family, disappointed.

Habang nanatiling loveless si Sam, si Anne, tulad ng alam natin, ay currently in love with the brother of actress-model Solenn Heussaff.

Mawawala muna ng Pilipinas si Ruffa Gutierrez for one month. Posibleng the entire month of July.

Once she comes home, which will be in August, she will start work on her movie with Star Cinema, that will co-star her with Maja Salvador and Angeline Quinto.

For a while, she concentrated on TV work. Huli siyang napanood as a contract talent ng TV5 sa Paparazzi.

Of her one-month absence in the country, Ruffa earlier announced na she passed the exams at the London’s King College where she will take up a crash course on International Politics.

Nanghihinayang siyang ’di ito i-take advantage.

Does this mean she will turn politician in time?

“That you have to see,” nakangiti niyang sagot.

Willing siya to get a private tutor. Too bad lang that her heavy schedule right now will not allow her to.

Bagama’t June 26 na ang playdate ng Four Sisters and a Wedding nila nina Bea Alonzo, Toni Gonzaga, Shaina Magdayao at Enchong Dee, they are still dubbing for their respective characters.

Four Sisters and a Wedding is a Star Cinema’s initial offering for its 20th anniversary.

Kris Aquino to James Yap’s camp: “Honestly, huwag naman akong gawing kontrabida”
    by Demai G. Sunio-Granali posted on June 18, 2013

“No, they didn’t grant him visitation rights,” wika ni Kris.

“Mali ang kanyang expectations. No, honestly, kasi it’s their joy na mag-ingay so ayokong ibigay iyong joy nila, so hindi ko papatulan.

Ipinagpatuloy ng kinikilalang Queen of All Media ang kanyang statement, “As far as ano... I will always do what is best for my son.

“And whatever it is that my son will request of me, I will give to him… as long as tama.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BIMBY.

“You know, I won’t lie to you kasi I can’t speak for my son.

Depensa naman ni Kris, “Alam mo, it’s not about me, it’s about my son and about what is best for him and kung anong gusto niya.

“I think videos can’t lie, kasi nga ina-allow ko iyong show ko to shoot us na… iyon raw, iyon talagang what’s happening.

“So, nakikita niyo, naririnig niyo, nakikita niyo kung anong klaseng magulang ako, kung anong relationship namin.”

FATHER’S DAY.

Kuwento ni Kris, “I texted eight in the morning the lawyers and I said na, ‘How is it best to contact [James]?’

“I didn’t get a reply ‘til 4:45 PM, at sinabi sa akin na, ‘Sorry.’

“So, honestly, huwag naman akong gawing kontrabida. I did my share… at eight in the morning!

Gano’n iyong wording.”

Which one will direk Joyce give up?

Director Joyce Bernal was happy to learn that her two new film projects are among the eight official entries in the forthcoming 39th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), but she might have to give up one.

Direk Joyce confirmed to The STAR that she was informed last Tuesday, the day when MMDA chair Francis Tolentino announced the full line-up, that there’s an MMFF ruling that no director can have two entries. A screening committee source said that the lady director would have to choose which film she will do for this year’s MMFF, although there’s no official word from the execom yet.

The two movies, which have listed her as the director, include Robin Padilla’s 10,000 Hours with Michael de Mesa and Bela Padilla as co-stars. The action-drama under Philippine Film Studio, Inc. is inspired by events that transpired when Sen. Panfilo Lacson went into hiding and became a fugitive in 2010, direk Joyce told The STAR.

The other one is the dramedy Torky and My Little Bossing under OctoArts Films, M-Zet TV Productions, APT Entertainment, Inc. and Kris Aquino Productions.

It’s a Vic Sotto and Kris Aquino starrer, but Kris will appear intermittently in the film. The movie also serves as the launching movie of Kris’ son Bimby with new GMA 7 child sensation Ryzza Mae Dizon.

Direk Joyce said that the film tells the story of a mother and a child (Kris and Bimby) whose lives are in danger. Mother temporarily leaves young son in the care of Vic’s character for safety. Ryzza, meanwhile, will play Vic’s granddaughter. “Ang cute and ang ganda ng story,” Joyce said.

While direk Joyce sees no problem finishing the two in time for the filmfest, as she will wrap up shooting 10,000 Hours in August and begins filming Torky and My Little Bossing in September, still “if it’s the ruling, I will accept it.”

“I don’t know what to do personally,” said Joyce, but if really made to choose, she’ll have to go with 10,000 Hours because the project was offered to her first early this year and she started shooting it a few days ago.

Another MMFF entry is the third Kimmy Dora film. Joyce directed the previous ones but the MMFF entry will be directed by Chris Martinez. “It’s the prequel and I’m still part of it as one of the producers” under Spring Films.

Meanwhile, a religious biopic is another standout in this year’s MMFF roster. San Pedro Calungsod Batang Martir is a film on the second Filipino saint, Pedro Calungsod, who was canonized in Vatican last year.

When asked how the religious-historical drama will attract mainstream viewers, director Francis Villacorta said, “I hope the Filipino youth is ready for this kind of material since this is an alternative viewing for them since Pedro Calungsod is supposed to be an example of the youth and for migrant workers. For two years, I have researched for this material heavily. I have begun my own devotion for San Pedro Calungsod because of this film. It became my own quest to tell this story.”

He added, “More than a year since we announced this project with JM de Guzman (in the title role) so many happened in the life of JM but he didn’t waver in the project. Giving up on this project was not an option. If we didn’t make it to the MMFF, we have another plan.”

    Korina’s Tsinelas campaign goes on
    Updated June 20, 2013

Korina Sanchez (photo) continues her advocacy to change the lives of millions of Filipino children one pair of slippers at a time as she recently launched her Isang Milyong Tsinelas campaign early this year.

Korina’s Tsinelas Campaign originally started as a public service segment on her top-rating News Magazine Sunday show Rated K in 2004 when she launched a project that aimed to provide the schoolchildren of Samar, Leyte brand-new slippers. Korina learned that most, if not all, of the schoolchildren of Samar, Leyte had to either walk barefoot or wear tattered slippers to school. Korina immediately identified rubber slippers or tsinelas as a basic need for the poor, especially that of children.

Since then, Korina has given away over a million pairs of slippers to children in most provinces and cities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao through her show Rated K. Korina’s latest project Isang Milyong Tsinelas aims to solicit one million pairs of slippers which will be given away to poor children nationwide.

The campaign’s central message is hope begins with the first step. “The campaign firmly aspires to inspire Filipino kids all over the country in achieving their goals and dreams with the hope that none of them will never attend school barefooted,” says Korina. “It is our dream that every child in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will be empowered with a decent pair of slippers which they can use every day as they attend school and play with each other.”

Today, Korina’s countdown to one million slippers is in full swing as she is partnering with several groups and corporations that share her vision of ensuring that no Filipino child will walk barefoot ever again.

“The campaign is very much open to donations through Rated K and ABS-CBN Foundation,” says the award-winning broadcast journalist. “It’s such a great challenge to collect and give away one million pairs of slippers but the look on every child’s face as it lightens up with the sight of brand-new slippers is worth the all effort.”

Korina explains why the campaign is very special to her, “While many already give food, clothes, education, medicine and shelter to the poor, we have identified slippers for children as a basic need we fail to acknowledge before. With a decent pair of slippers we don’t only ensure safety and health to these kids. We restore dignity and revive hope. Hope begins with the first step.”

    Indie-pendence Day

Gawad Urian’s big winners (from left) Alessandra de Rossi,
Nora Aunor, Adolf Alix Jr. and Jericho Rosales

The Gawad Urian Film Awards Night was held Tuesday night at the NBC Tent, and will be telecast on Cinema One starting this Saturday, June 22. If you want to witness the handing of the mantle of the future of Philippine Cinema, this would be a good place to start. For on that night, we saw the list of nominees for all categories monopolized by our indie film movement.

Similar in concept to the NY Film Critics Awards in the US, the Gawad’s award-giving body (the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino) is composed of film critics, professors of film studies and members of the academe, whose lives are devoted to the study and appreciation of Filipino movies. Their resounding verdict was that if one looked for quality films in 2012, one need not look further than the various independently-produced films that made such an impact as they left our shores, and were heralded abroad as the new wave of Philippine cinema.

And one was struck by the sense of community that was prevalent during the course of the night. While some mainstream actors and actresses have seen the indie film movement as a means to do something for art’s sake, and to remind themselves of why they entered the profession; by and large, the slew of films up for honors showcased how, commercial considerations aside, there is a richness and diversity that propels these indie films to continuously strive and reach new heights — and this is populated by professionals who wonderfully have film-making coursing through their veins.

Sidebar highlights included moments such as sisters vying for the Best Actress plum, as you had both Assunta and Alessandra de Rossi nominated for Baybayin; and in the Best Actor category, you had a father and son competing, courtesy of Bembol Roco for Brillante Mendoza’s Thy Womb and Dominic Roco for Ang Nawawala. While Alessandra copped the Best Supporting Actress nod for Sta. Niña, the ever-popular Nora Aunor walked away with another Best Actress trophy (for Brillante’s Thy Womb). Jericho Rosales won Best Actor for his work in Alagwa, while Art Acuña in Posas took home Best Supporting Actor. For Best Film, out of the blue, Ang Paglalakbay ng Mga Bituin sa Gabing Madilim took the coveted prize. The Best Director award went to Adolf Alix Jr. for the violent family saga, Mater Dolorosa.

Taking on host duties throughout the Awards Night were Cherie Gil, Iza Calzado, Richard Gomez and Xian Lim. The presenters were showbiz celebrities always accompanied by a Manunuri. One touching moment came when an In Memoriam segment had us remembering how the likes of Dolphy, Bella Flores, Eddie Romero, Mario O’Hara, Marilou Diaz-Abaya and Luis Gonzalez have all gone, making our showbiz celestial lights that much dimmer. Mila del Sol, a spry 90 year old, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the montage prepared to introduce her was a great slice of Philippine cinema history.

A running joke throughout the night was whether the Manunuri would have to defend their nominees, why they had centered all their choices from within the indie film arena. I can clearly see, however, why they made such choices; and more to the point, was my wondering how many Filipinos have actually seen the films honored, why it has to be that these films garner more accolades and audience appreciation abroad, and why our mainstream cinema-goers have still not caught on, and have trooped to watch the celluloid magic that’s being performed right in front of their eyes. Kudos to the Manunuri, and to Cinema One’s channel head Ronald Arguelles for having banded together to make the event an amplified reality.

The 36th Gawad Urian will be aired on Cinema One on June 22 at 3 and 11 p.m. It also airs on June 23 at 10 p.m.

It Takes a Man and a Woman.

TAKE IT TAKE IT Ni Lolit Solis (Pilipino Star Ngayon) | Updated June 20, 2013

Hearing nina AiAi at Jed inilihim

Real-life?
