    tama.

but then again, baka baliktad ang mangyar, maging positibo ito kay maricel at maging negatibo kay gerald.

    daming kasinungalingan nilang pinalabas.

Is truth really lost in the power of the capital?

Two official statements coming from the same camps. Both camps on the same side. Both statements are evidently slanted and skewed towards a favored talent: an investment, a product manufactured by its assembly line, from its breeding ground to its packaging and up to its marketing arms. The product’s name is Gerald Anderson, a cherished possession of Star Magic, the talent management arm of the ABS-CBN, the developer, caretaker and caregiver of a stable of stars from which the ABS-CBN’s movie outfit Star Cinema gets its steady supply for casting in its movies, probably the only consistent profitable venture it has that could rake in millions for the giant conglomerate all these years.

Anderson is so important a commodity that even an industry institution, a veteran in the field, a respected and multi-awarded actress like Maricel Soriano should take all the flaks in the media for what allegedly transpired on that fateful dawn of January 15, 2012, in those wee hours of the morning. It didn’t matter what happened before and after that incident. What seems important now is how the truth shall be framed to protect a prime commodity and disregard the stellar position of one who has earned her place in the industry through sheer talent and hard work, one who has contributed so much to the business and art of both the film and television industries, even to ABS-CBN itself. Indeed, everything boils down to Economics, to the power of the capital and the lure of profits.

Probably for ABS-CBN, Soriano is no longer as profitable a product as she was when it re-opened after EDSA Revolution in 1986 when Maricel’s career was at its peak and became one of its pioneering contract talents who had brought it not just profits but prestige as well. But all these were part of the history now. Today, she became a dispensable product and Anderson a prime commodity. As of yet, all press statements describe Mr. Anderson as “an epitome of excellence in acting, an exemplar of professionalism, and a symbol of impeccable character” implying that Soriano’s behavior is uncalled for and unjustified and needed to be reconfigured through anger management.

The issue was trending in Yahoo Philippines with Maricel Soriano’s name ranking second. People were curious, people were asking, people were questioning. And understandably so because as far as this issue is concerned, we’ve read and heard everything except the TRUTH. The truth verified and thoroughly validated by and from both camps on what really transpired between Maricel Soriano and Gerald Anderson on the first taping day of what ABS-CBN claimed to be as the actor’s television drama series. Not Soriano’s.

What were circulated in the media are these two official statements from ABS-CBN:

    Star Magic’s official statement reads:

“Star Magic has the utmost confidence not only in Gerald Anderson’s exceptional ability as an actor, but also in his unassailable personal character and professional behavior. The incidents that led to the removal of Maricel from Gerald’s latest telenovela were not provoked or instigated by Gerald in any manner.”

ABS-CBN’s Corporate Communications’ official statement reads:

“Due to the unfortunate incident between Gerald Anderson and Maricel Soriano that transpired on the first taping day of“Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,” the ABS-CBN management and the management of Maricel Soriano have agreed that Maricel will no longer be part of the cast. The teleserye starring Gerald Anderson will proceed as scheduled."

We need not be an expert in public relations to know that the above statements are skewed and expectedly so because they were issued by one camp, depicting one as the aggressor and the other the aggrieved. One statement says that Anderson has nothing to do with Soriano’s behavior effectively implying that the latter’s alleged actions are not merited. With this statement and based on earlier unverified accounts of what happened, it would appear that Soriano is the uncontrollable ***** who couldn’t be pacified by the humble and apologetic Anderson. For the untrained who are not skilled with how public relations work, it would appear so. And this is how the public opinion is formed regardless of whether both sides are fairly presented or covered.

As of this writing, unverified reports claim that Dawn Zulueta declined the offer to replace Maricel in the drama series while Dina Bonnevie, one of the members of the cast of the controversial television series, allegedly also berated Anderson. And in a tweet by reporter and radio anchor, Jobert Sucaldito, no less than the Superstar, Ms. Nora Aunor called Soriano to comfort her. These experienced actresses may not be vocal about their opinions on what happened but their simple gestures speak volumes.

Until now, we have yet to hear Soriano’s side. And we doubt, we ever will. The actress is known to have always preferred to nurse her wounds in private. She would rather suffer in silence and bear the agony of false accusations than set the records straight. She would never resort to answering her bashers however they may hurt her. For four decades, she has fought her own battles in this industry this way and has never needed the protection of an establishment.

And probably not even now. Not even when the media frame the news with her being booted out of Anderson’s teleserye, even if it’s clearly a mutual decision. Not even if it seems that ABS-CBN preferred Anderson than her. Not even if she’s being portrayed as “a has-been who has to know her place” in the industry today. Not even when the industry she has loved and grew up and spent most of her life in suddenly became ungrateful and cruel.

We may never hear it from Soriano or her talent managers who have kept mum in the midst of this controversy because Viva’s hands may be tied as well due to its existing production partnerships with ABS-CBN while it also has other talents under contract with the giant network. Or from Anderson himself because he need not have to defend himself as his camps are actively and aggressively doing their job very well.

But we appeal to the voices of truth in the entertainment media. We’d like to believe that there is still journalistic ethics in the entertainment industry. That there are still those who adhere to the integrity of the truth. That the truth is still out there and so is the pursuit of justice and fairness for all.

Or those were lost too in the power of the capital? And so is the truth behind the Soriano-Anderson controversy?

    Hopefully not.

Message for Ms. Shirley Kwan: )

The global fans of Ms. Maricel Soriano are very grateful for your effort, care and concern for the Diamond Star. We know that you have been instrumental in Maricel's renewed interest in her showbiz career. As what Maricel said in her "Rated K" interview, you were one of those who kept on believing in her that's why she is raring to work again.

Now that Maricel is embroiled in another controversy, we hope that you, Boss Vic del Rosario and Ms. Malou Choa-Fagar will be by her side and give her all your love and support, just as we, the global Maricelians, are always here to defend her and support her all the way.

We just feel very disheartened by how ABS-CBN fabricates stories and issues statements that malign and degrade the Diamond Star. WE CAN'T TAKE THIS SITTING DOWN ANYMORE. Maricel has been a "veteran" of sorts of all kinds of trials by publicity, and now, we feel it is time for her camp to clarify matters for the sake of truth and justice. We are so affected by the lies and exaggerations in the stories that ABS-CBN has webbed just to protect Gerald Anderson. We have nothing personal against him, but the people should know that the real reason of Maricel's anger (which was called for) was his INADEQUACIES AS AN ACTOR.

Everyone knows how Marya loves her craft and values professionalism. So working with a lead actor who comes to the set unprepared and lacking of focus is indeed a cause of delay. Maricel's intention was for Gerald to shape up and perhaps, she was also speaking in behalf of the "small people" - the production crew - who had been working beyond what is expected of them because of the unnecessary delays caused by an incompetent actor.

Let the people know the TRUTH and the REAL REASONS why Maricel lost her patience and composure. This is what we ask of you and the others in Maricel's management team.

On our part, we have been tweeting, sending emails and posting our sentiments and two cents' worth in various social networking sites for people to know that MAricel has intelligent supporters who can't be blinded by tabloid stuff. We somehow sacrifice our work and time with our family by being glued in social networking sites defending and showing full support for Maricel.

This controversy isn't as devastating as the maids issue, but tarnishing the truth at the expense of Maricel is something we cannot fathom. Please help us set the facts straight. We know that Maricel is not too keen on facing the cameras and keep on blabbing. It has been her nature to value silence, so we really hope someone in her management team will openly come to her defense.

Thank you once again, Ms. Shirley, and please send our most loving regards to Maricel. God bless us all.

i think its about time that maricel speak up and let everyone know what really happened. enough with the katahimikan na naging habit nya everytime nasasangkot sya sa controversy! sana din hindi maapektuhan ang relationship between inay and abs-cbn! i would love inay to still pursue her comeback with abs cbn! sana wag syang i-pull out ng viva sa dos! im sure the truth will come out soon and i hope this time it will be coming from the diamond star herself! i just cant understand what could have happened kung bakit sa first shooting day pa ni inay naganap ang lahat, at talagang agad agad syang nawala, umalis or tinanggal sa cast! why why why???

Another one from a person named Robbie na parang "insider" sa taping.

me too! me too daw o? naguluhan ako.

at the end of the day... (the end of the day daw o?

I said ahhh may "chemistry".

The possibilities are endless.

I've worked with ABS CBN before I migrated here in US and Yes we love (managament and staff) Maricel Soriano.. kaya nga ako naging fan niya kasi she is soooo different. She really shines like a diamond.

It was a mutual agreement between Dos and Viva Management Kaya no further comments na sila because they respect and love Ms Maricel.

Inside source, Ms Maricel was really really upset when Gerald can't deliver. At first Gerald didn't take it seriously daw the sermon dahil at young age and his upbringing is different nga naman. It wasn't the first time so sa paulit ulit na pangyayari, nagalit na talaga si Ms Maricel however when Ms Maricel is ready, OPEN PA DAW ang role for her esp walang gustong tumanggap ng role.

honestly, naguguluhan ako sa mga iba't ibang side of stories... gosh sometimes I want to think this is just a BIG GIMIK which obviously hindi BUY ni Ms Maricel.. sorry please don't bash me , this is just my personal opinion

Marya is not for the fainthearted
24 January 2013 23:00 Written by ARNEL RAMOS

    MALAYA NEWSPAPER

You won’t find sugarcoated truths in this corner. If you were expecting them, then you certainly have wandered into the wrong place.

While we may have our little biases and pet peeves, we set out always to look at showbiz occurrences and traditions from a broader viewpoint.

This should have long been done. The time is now.

    ***

It was perhaps why Carmen Rosales did it in the early ‘60s or after her, Lolita Rodriguez in the late ‘70s. Those two remarkable ladies of the silver screen knew better than to prolong their stay even when much of the applause and mania has died down.

This comes to mind on the heels of the big Maricel Soriano, seasoned star and Gerald Anderson, homegrown Kapamilya prized property altercation. What really transpired on the set of “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,” the soap that was to be the ABS-CBN comeback of its former drama queen Maricel Soriano and a showcase for one of its favored finds Gerald Anderson is open to different interpretations, depending on whose camp you are on.

The aftermath of the real-life confrontation between Soriano and Anderson who play mother and son in the said soap is even more interesting to examine. In a matter of a day after the news leaked to media, a decision was reached, with Soriano eased out of the series and Anderson retained.

Was Maricel adamant not to work with Gerald again? Or was it Gerald who asked to be taken out of the series if Maricel were to stay around? We could only second-guess.

There are, however, summations that crystallize out of the whole brouhaha. Had this been the ‘90s when Marya – as admirers and colleagues call the decidedly mercurial actress – was raking in the money for the Lopez-owned media conglomerate, it is foregone conclusion that Anderson would have been shown the way out.

But this is the here and now, and in the eyes of ABS-CBN, Marya is yesterday’s star without whom a “serye” with a lamely-acted lead part would still bring in the ads and the ratings.

Yes, we fully concede that Soriano should have exercised more sobriety in dealing with a perpetual non-actor whose mother studio’s drumbeaters have made him believe that he can actually act and that he will one day join the ranks of the truly great thespians in the industry. But then again, reality is staring Maricel Soriano right in the face. As an editor-friend intones: “Showbiz worships on the altar of youth.”

The incident can only be best described as “unfortunate” but there are underlying implications that need to be addressed. For instance, a showbiz scribe who goes un-credited in the “Seen Scene” section of a tab pointed out that Maricel Soriano’s followers are no different from Nora Aunor’s supporters because these groups of fans choose to turn a blind eye to the fact that the stars they venerate have chronic attitude problem.

Now, we would totally understand someone like Soriano who is as much famous for her scintillating gifts before the cameras as she is notorious for her temperamental and tempestuous nature to value the time and labor of lowly underpaid workers in the industry (read: TV crews and staff) and so she sees to it that she comes to the set prepared, focused, at times possessed with a maniacal insistence at perfection.

Artists are a quirky lot. And we are spelling that out for the sake of those who are light years away from ever being named “an artist” in their line of work.

“She behaved (in this particular incident) as she is known for,” says someone who has worked with Soriano in previous projects. “True-to-form. Hindi ba nasabihan din niya si Diet (Diether Ocampo) dati when they did the movie ‘Soltera’? O si Roxanne Guinoo when they did Maricel’s last TV project with ABS-CBN na ‘Florinda’? Ang ending naging ninang pa ni Roxanne sa kasal si Marya. Pero bakit sina Diether at Roxanne took it good-naturedly? Hindi nila pinersonal. At nagtanda na sila after that.”

Our source then drops the bomb: “She really cannot stand lousy actors.” Indeed, Anderson should have known better. Or should have been told what to expect in the company of an acting legend. If this were Hollywood, he would have gotten worse from say, Katharine Hepburn.

Being current fair-haired boy of the studio (these titles flit from one recipient to the next) does not in any way give you license to be lax. Acting is not for those who treat it as a source of amusement and financial gains. You have got to give back as much as you are able to get.

We can personally vouch for Anderson’s lack of focus and attentiveness, and in this case, as an interviewee. Two years ago, we were interviewing him for a story and from the get-go, his eyes were wandering off at different directions, giving us nothing but stock answers.

A veteran director swears by the reality show discovery’s “cockiness.” “May kaartehan talaga iyang batang ‘yan.”

What we aim to arrive at is the chance to put this whole mess in proper perspective. That things be presented to the public with a sense of fairness. We can never expect Soriano to defend herself even in the eye of a maelstrom. She would characteristically keep mum. She has made her point and that’s that. Those holier and more righteous than her can do all the nitpicking they want to their heart’s content.

But then, it does not at all surprise us, the subtle maneuverings from Anderson’s camp to draw sympathy towards him. With the vast ABS-CBN resources to back him up, that feat is as easy to accomplish as solving the simplest mathematical equation. But is it in any way just?

We would like to quote, at this point, a post on an online forum from someone who goes by the user name isabel_felix: “It’s hard but Maricel has to accept that she no longer works in an environment where the craft and the art is still truly appreciated and held high.

“She should understand that this is the AGE OF MEDIOCRITY. I could imagine how sad and frustrating this has been to her, growing up in an industry where professionalism was valued and upheld.

“It doesn’t matter whether Gerald was protected by ABS-CBN. He needs that more than Maricel. Kung tutuusin, lopsided ang laban e. An institution by herself versus an overstaying upstart. Maricel has survived it all. And she will continue to do so, because she has nothing but TALENT, a rarity in this industry today filled with mediocrity.

“This is a blessing in disguise. Better assignments are up ahead or perhaps retirement. Either way, I would be very happy for Maricel. She deserves peace. She’s given me four decades of excellence and true passion for her craft.”

And indeed, times may have changed, the changing-of-the-guards inevitable but then the likes of Maricel Soriano and yes, fellow perceived enfant terrible La Aunor serve as reminders of an era when the greatest of performers were the hardest to comprehend.Soriano, so not unlike one of her idols, the late drama great Charito Solis, would never hesitate to cut someone down to size when needed and provoked. That flimsy account from an ABS-CBN source who says that it was really Soriano who flubbed her lines at the taping is very telling of the kind of damage control that Gerald’s employers would undertake even at the expense of a star whose legacy will outlast a million Gerald Andersons.

Mga kapatid, this is nice to know na nagkakalapit tayo sa panahong may unos sa buhay ng ating Inay, I can feel the love that everyone for Marya, the best thing we can do is to pray for her, if this project is for her then it's hers, pero kung hindi para sa kanya,ay hindi talaga mangyayari yun.

In fact , I'd rather see Marya in movies , rather than doing predictable and recycled- themed teleserye, I do feel that Marya will never get any fulfillment as an A1 actress, kung may nawawala na namang anak, may nagkapalit ng anak, may kontrabidang hindi namamatay matay, may kidnapan sa huli, honestly happy ako dahil wala na syang ka cheapang teleserye especially with Cristine Reyes and Gerald.

If Marya should have a teleserye I'd rather see her as the kontrabida na minamanipulate nya ang mga characters ng istorya, ala Judi Dench lang ang peg sa pelikulang Notes On A Scandal.

hay naku hindi kaya si mama mary ang nababaliw? artista ka dapat umarte ka lang. hayaan mong yung director ang magpatakbo ng shooting. remember nung mag walk out siya sa isang anthology niya sa tv5. hay naku ganyan nalang yan ng ganyan. oh di ba first and last project niya yon sa tv5.

tapos meron pa siyang gagawing movie with vice and gabby. sana lang di niya pagsisigawan si vice. alam niyo naman very awkward pa ang acting ni vice.
