i don't think it matters how those imports got to their respective schools now. as long as everything was done according to the board's guidelines it should be a no issue. ok so some of them only have basketball, and not college education in their minds, but so do local players. marami din naman jan ang hindi nag aaral.

No one is convincing you to buy the stories they know. If you think the walk-in shebang is untrue then so be it. Call it a day.

This will be tough because Ateneo has the championship experience as an advantage. UST will rely on the heart and mental toughness that led them to several comeback wins this season and make no mistake about it, they are hungry.

    Manalo, matalo, Go USTe!

So the conflicting battle cries are "Hunger" vs "Vengeance"

Which is weightier? I think Vengeance.

People have been killed because of hunger. Wars have been fought on account of vengeance.

So in effect, you are saying, Kirk was made in the Philippines using imported raw materials.

Kung sa subject matter ng African recruits, eh kung bakit si Mbah pa ang nakuha ng UP..... sa subject matter naman ng home-grown foreigners like Kirk Long, eh bakit si Gingerich pa ang nakuha ng UP?

may the BETTER team wins tomorrow.. sana kung sino mang manalo, in convincing fashion na.. but really, it will be intense.

both teams are good, but im expecting one team will define what Unbreakable means.. the true champion team will impose its might against the other.

    God Bless Ateneo-UST..

You both deserve to be at this stage., Pero sabi nga nila, sa salpukang ito, someone's got to give!!!

I'm not instigating anything here. I'm merely saying that Kirk Long is American but he is also almost Filipino because he basically grew up in the Philippines. He may have went to an American-style school but Faith Academy (his high school) is, nonetheless, set here in the Philippines.

I think the UAAP should make a clause with regards to players like Kirk Long who basically lived most of his life in the Philippines. For me, foreigners who have been citizens of the Philippines for more than 10 years already should not be considered foreign players.

Imagine, what if a UAAP team managed to recruit a lot of good American players from Faith Academy. They'd have to suffer the consequences of only fielding them one at a time.

    Katipunan Empire or España Alliance?

    Katipunan Empire or España Alliance?
The UAAP Season 75 Men’s Basketball Finals
    by: Ike Sulat

The last time a UAAP team won five straight championships in the Men’s Basketball Tournament was more than forty years ago, during UE’s record run of seven straight titles. The Ateneo Blue Eagles, already with four consecutive, are gunning for their fifth when the finals start tomorrow.

The UST Growling Tigers are in the way of the Katipunan Empire, with Coach Pido Jarencio (the Jedi Master, if you will) hoping to lead another team of overachieving rebels against a formidable foe. Jarencio was a rookie coach when he led a middling UST squad (with a record of 6-6 in the regular season) against the heavily-favored Ateneo (10-2 in the eliminations) in the 2006 finals, winning in three games, 2-1.

The Blue Eagles already dished retribution for that setback, eliminating UST in the first round of the Final Four three times during the past five seasons (2007, 2009, 2011), but revenge will be much sweeter in the biggest stage of college basketball.

Ateneo finished the eliminations with a league-leading 12-2 record, losing games only to UST and UE. Ateneo is favored to get another title this year, with Coach Norman Black directing a tight and disciplined team consisting mostly of veterans. They defeated the La Salle Green Archers in their Final Four matchup last Saturday, 66-63, to move to the finals.

UST, on the other hand, has a 10-4 record, good for second place overall. After losing their season opener to FEU, the Tigers got everyone’s attention when they went on to win the rest of their first round assignments, including a comeback victory against the Blue Eagles. UST won against the NU Bulldogs in the Final Four, 63-57, to arrange another finals contest with Ateneo.

The Growling Tigers are slight underdogs in the finals, but they’re not lacking in allies, as DLSU usually roots for Ateneo’s opponents. It’s not a stretch that fans of UE and FEU, two of the three teams (the third is DLSU) that the Blue Eagles defeated during their current title run, will also be praying that UST gets the 2012 title.

    The Split

Ateneo and UST split their regular season games, with UST scoring an upset win in the first round via Aljon Mariano’s brilliance, and Ateneo getting back at UST in the second round with Ryan Buenafe’s endgame guile.

Here are the top scorers for those games:

    First round - UST 71, Ateneo 70
    UST: Mariano 21, Teng 16, Abdul 14, Fortuna 11
    Ateneo: Ravena 19, Salva 17, Slaughter 9, Tiongson 8

    September 16, 2012 – Ateneo 68, UST 66
    Ateneo: Ravena 18, Tiongson 13, Buenafe 11, Slaughter 10, Sumalinog 7, Salva 6
    UST: Abdul 22, Teng 12, Mariano 9, Fortuna 8, Ferrer 8, Bautista 7

    Empire or Alliance?

The series could go either way, as their elimination games have shown, but here are some reasons why Ateneo or UST will win the UAAP Season 75 Finals:

    Ateneo Blue Eagles

    Reason #1 – Kiefer Ravena
‘The Phenom’ has repeatedly confounded UST’s defense this season, en route to averaging 18.5 points per game against the Tigers. He is the key to Ateneo’s championship title.

Ravena carried Ateneo in their Final Four match against DLSU, dominating the Green Archers with 16 points in the fourth quarter, and a total of 28 points in the game.

    Reason #2 – Greg Slaughter
Height is might in basketball, and no one in the UAAP is taller than Slaughter, who is seven feet tall. Although he has struggled versus UST this season, he is a constant double-double threat.

    Reason #3 - Experience
Never underestimate the heart of a champion. Ateneo has seen it all year after year, and has cranked out titles regularly. They have the poise and the experience to rise over almost any adversity.

Nico Salva, Justin Chua and Greg Slaughter are in their final years of playing for the Blue Eagles, and they will go all out for a win. Master tactician Norman Black will also move out after this season to coach Talk N’ Text in the PBA.

    UST Growling Tigers

    Reason #1 -Karim Abdul
MVP runner-up Abdul leads the Tigers in offense and defense, with averages of 16.9 ppg, 12.2 rpg, 1.5 spg, and 2 bpg. UST runs a lot of their scoring plays through Abdul, while his long arms breaks up a lot of opposing sets.

    Reason #2 – A Deep Bench
The Tigers initially go to Jeric Teng and Karim Abdul in the early minutes of the game, and, depending on Jarencio’s game plan, will have Clark Bautista and Aljon Mariano or Kevin Ferrer coming off the bench. Bautista, Mariano and Ferrer can all shoot threes and each have topscored for the Tigers on three separate games this season.

Mariano and Ferrer conspired to limit MVP Bobby Ray Parks to 12 points in their Final Four matchup, more than eight points below his league-leading 20.7 points per game.

    Reason#3 – Attitude
Jarencio was a part of the never-say-die Ginebra teams in the PBA, and this has infected his squad in the UAAP. If the Tigers find themselves in a bind, they will usually make defensive stops to get their offense rolling.

UST has frequently frustrated their opponents all season long by winning games in the last few minutes of the game, coming back from seeming losses against NU, Adamson and DLSU. Their comeback from a 19-point deficit against Ateneo made them a Final Four favorite early in the season.

So who do you think will win the championship? Are you hoping for Ateneo dominance or a UST resurgence? Empire or alliance?

Coaches weigh in on UAAP Finals http://ph.sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaa...ap-finals.html

    Experience vs. hunger.

This, in a nutshell, was how majority of the coaches see the UAAP Season 75 men’s basketball best-of-three finals showdown between four-time defending champion Ateneo and pumped-up University of Santo Tomas that unfolds this Saturday at the MOA Arena.

if you ask the six other coaches, the top-seeded Blue Eagles, who finished the preliminaries with a 12-2 card and gave archrival La Salle the big boot 66-63, will have their hands full against the Growling Tigers, the second-ranked team with a 10-4 eliminations record and ousted host National University 63-57 in the other semis pairing last Saturday.

Both teams split their head-to-head match-ups this season, with UST completing a 71-70 shocker last July 19 and Ateneo settling for a close 68-66 decision last Sept. 15, and the other coaches expect another grueling battle with two placing their bets on Ateneo, one on UST, and three saying it could go either way.

In a poll conducted by Yahoo! Sports Philippines, here’s their take:

Leo Austria, Adamson: Best game ng Ateneo against sa best game ng UST, I think Ateneo will still prevail. (He’s) very intelligent and has a very high basketball IQ.

Eric Altamirano, National University: I think it’s Ateneo but a close one.

Boycie Zamar, University of the East: Realistic lang ako, sino ba ang four-time defending champion? It’s all about heart.

Gee Abanilla, La Salle: Close call, anybody’s ball game. Great match-up talent-wise for both teams but it will boil down to experience vs. hunger. I guess, mas may lamang ang experience but you can’t discount the hunger.

Bert Flores, Far Eastern University: Magandang laban.

Ricky Dandan, University of the Philippines: It’s too close to call. They’re evenly matched. It’s up to the team that will exploit its strengths. I think it’ll reach Game 3. Ateneo’s strength is their finals experience while UST simply has the best import (Karim Abdul) in the league.
