    Goodbye to Haagen Dazs

To the followers of imported ice cream Haagen Dazs, and other sweet stuff like Pillsbury and Sara Lee, did you know that the last one you ate may be your last? The firm that imports these goods is already leaving the country. Over the past weeks, they have been selling the stuff on sale to get rid of stocks.

But the bigger story than the sale is why they left.

It was not because the food did not taste good. It was because they could not tolerate a corrupt Bureau of Customs official they had to deal with when importing the goods. Our sources said that instead of haggling over tariffs to pay in order for them to get their stocks past Customs, they decided to simply forget the Philippine market.

An importer who admitted to paying bribe money for the importation (of other goods) said the situation at the BoC has actually gotten worse under the current administration because grafters no longer state the price they wanted… but importers have to make sure they pay a high rate for the Customs officials to “mind the goods” and bring them in.

Guess the “matuwid na daan” thrust skipped some Customs officials.

    Ping Lacson for Customs Chief
(The Philippine Star) Updated August 06, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (9)

MANILA, Philippines - P-Noy can proclaim loudly until he is hoarse and blue in the face how determined he is to go by the Daang Matuwid and a good part of our population will just roll their eyes. At best, some will give him the benefit of the doubt. But even that has an expiry date and that date is fast approaching. As he goes on to his third year on the job, results will start to matter.

If we are talking Daang Matuwid, Customs is the place where P-Noy can show he means business. Last week, Sen. Panfilo Lacson revealed that it is more or less business as usual at Customs with a Friday distribution of forbidden fruits going on as if they have not heard of Daang Matuwid.

Senator Ping was careful to say that the current Customs chief is clean but he also wondered if Ruffy Biazon is being hoodwinked by his people specially because he is new to Customs operations. I was with the CEO of the local Shell subsidiary late last week and he confirmed that oil smuggling is still rampant, as much as 30-40 percent of all imports. This failure of P-Noy’s men to curb smuggling is a factor Shell will consider in making a final decision on future investments here.

Then, there is that brazen attempt to smuggle half a billion pesos worth of Indian rice at Subic. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile was fuming when some of the officials tried to use Subic’s being a free port as reason for the Indian rice being unloaded there.

Wala eto... nalugi lang yan dahil sa malakas na benta ng Magnum, at wala naman talagang bumibili nyan dahil super mahal naman talaga ng Haagen Daaz

not a hagen daz fan (and wont bother correct my spelling).. my brother and my boss solidified these customs issue, basing it on first hand accounts. my boss even had her business shut down dahil sobra na maningil ng bribe ang customs sa pagpasok ng administrasyong Aquino... hindi lang hagen daz ang apektado.. ang buong industriya na may kaugnayan sa importation ang apektado!

the Bureau of Customs needs to be exposed now! not by any local politician, but by a foreign entity!

Nah, it just took them years to realize that selling ice cream at P150/scoop in a country where most earn P450/day is just plain stupid.

There's a reason why it's called "dirty" ice cream.

Oh well, it's your tummy that's gonna bear with the germs anyway.

Actually sobrang malala daw talaga ang customs ngayon. For example, yung Institute of Internal Auditors, hindi na makapagbenta ng reviewers from the US kasi hindi daw sila makakuha ng permit to import books. Kaya hindi na lang sila nagbenta.

Dapat kasi single tax rate na lang para wala nang imbento ng kung anu-anong charges.

Kailangan talaga ng diktadurya sa Pilipinas.

"Dirty" ice cream does not necessarily mean that it's full of germs. In fact, if the formula used to make ice cream is contaminated with germs, it'll down people really bad, because the ingredients make bacterial growth favorable.

If you keep it below freezing temperature with the help of a saline solution, bacteria growth will freeze as well.

There's what we call a target market. Obviously, if you earn 450 bucks a day, then you might not be able to afford 150 bucks a scoop.

It's not like the ordinary masses buy Froyo and Milk Tea on a regular basis.
