Peace group asks for ceasefire between AFP, BIFM

A group of peace advocates has called for a ceasefire in Maguindanao to allow internally-displaced families to return home.

The Mindanao Peoples’ Peace Movement (MPPM) urged both the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM) to uphold civilian supremacy and human rights in times of conflict.

The MPPM called for the immediate pull-out of both government troops and rebels from the affected civilian communities, and urged the BIFM to hold their ranks and to communicate their political demands in an open manner that involves dialogue to avoid bloodshed and violence.

NDRRMC: 8 killed, 25,650 affected in fighting between govt soldiers, BIFM members

At least eight have been killed while 25,650 people have been affected by fighting between government forces and a splinter group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front since Sunday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Thursday.

In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said the fatalities in the clash included four soldiers and four Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM) members.

BIFM is a splinter group of the MILF, which is conducting peace negotiations with the government.

The four fatalities from the government side were identified as:

- Sgt. Sonny Estabillo (38th Infantry Battalion)
- Pfc. Arsenio Nunescan (1 Mechanized Brigade)
- Pfc. Henry Caunga (68th Infantry Battalion)
- Pvt. Duniel Aragon (68th Infantry Battalion)
