Golla is a huge negative to the team. Everytime he is in they are outscored. There was one play where he fumbled a very good drop pass.

Other than a few bad decisions, Ryan played a very good game. Most of the threes he took were really bad, and most of them had Tiongson wide open and asking for the ball.

FEU lost because they were (understandably) counting on Ateneo's bench to be it's usual self. Boy did Juami Tiongson, JP Erram, and Ryan Buenafe throw a wrench on that plan.

Also I now dub Buenafe and Erram FEU's contrapelos.

Buenafe, Erram, and Tiongson always play well against FEU. Erram had a good Finals series against FEU in 2010 and was good in one game in last year's Finals. Tiongson also had his moments in last year I think. And we all know Ryan's heroics back in 2010.

But I think Buenafe's 2010 Finals heroic three pointer got into his head. He was shooting three pointers in this game more than he usually does. And there were instances when Tiongson was open when Buenafe attempted his shots.

Sad to see Salva struggle though after seeing him destroy FEU in last year's Finals.

Kiefer should work on his shooting. His midrange game was money last season but it has been missing this season. Likewise on Gonzaga's shooting. What happened to Tonino? He was a steady shooter in the past few seasons. But now, I think I haven't seen him make a three point shot. Even those which are very wide open.

And why does Norman Black insist on playing Golla? What can he do that Erram can't? Sure he can play defense but so can Erram. Erram is a better shotblocker, a better offensive player, and a better rebounder. He's just better than Golla at everything and he's much taller as well at about 6'7''-9''. He doesn't fumble the ball. Golla always does. It's just so annoying that Golla can fumble the ball on wide open passes from teammates or during split second openings. Nabibigyan tuloy ng oras and depensa para makarecover. Tsk.

Unfortunate loss for FEU but great game for them nonetheless. This game again proved that they still have the best PGs this year. They had a good game plan to put Slaughter in foul trouble by driving hard to the basket more and challenging his defense most notably by Anthony Hargrove. Coincidentally, Greg seems to have relaxed his defense in the first half, allowing FEU players like A.Bringas and Hargrove to easily score inside. Maybe it was by design to reserve his personal fouls. ADMU countered the attack by putting twin towers in the paint by adding Erram. FEU struggled to adjust.

With this game, again proves that ADMU lives and dies with Slaughter. Sensing the game on the line, they always put the ball down low to Greg that either allows him to score or pass(like the baseline drive and layup of Ravena). Moreover, ADMU struggled to create fastbreaks, a key strength of the Eagles in padding those leads which Ravena's also gets the bulk of his output. FEU forced or even reduced ADMU to do half court offense more which the latter is struggling this year.

Other teams will definitely learn from this game when they face the defending champions in the second round.

Five ways to appreciate the Ateneo win over FEU

by rick olivares pic by brosi

The battle between Greg Slaughter and Anthony Hargrove was like Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. haha

You have to wonder what RR Garcia is thinking. No Eric Salamat. No Emman Monfort. No Kirk Long. Yet his FEU Tamaraws still cannot get over the hump against Ateneo.

The La Salle-NU game that preceded the main event had as much theater and drama too. But this one literally rocked the Big Dome to its foundations. And besides, it was packed unlike the sparsely attended first game.

    Wow! Hirap.

Walking alongside Norman Black to the media room, coach uttered two words: “Wow. Hirap.”

    Let’s flip the postulate.

No Al Ramos. No Pippou Noundou. No Ping Exciminiano. And these Tamaraws are still a tough bunch to beat. The Blue Eagles had to buck dubious calls in the first quarter, a double digit FEU lead, and Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia going inside like the shaded lane was a McDonald’s drive through to pull out a workmanlike win.

In the first half, Ateneo could not adjust to the wing play of FEU where their perimeter players would move around a lot thanks to a bunch of screens to free them. The Blue Eagles got so overly concerned with Romeo and Garcia losing their guards that they forgot players like Arvie Bringas, Roger Pogoy, and Anthony Hargrove who took advantage of the confusion to drive in for a lay up, and-one, or even a monstrous throwdown.

For a FEU team that has steadily lost its low post players over the years (see box) they sure took it to Ateneo early on.

After the first half of play, FEU had 20 points from inside the lane, 6 points from the free throw line, and 11 points from the perimeter.

During FEU’s earlier four-game win streak that saw them win by the skin of their teeth (usually in the final play of the game), head coach Bert Flores described the method to their madness. “Hinahayaan ko si Terrence o si RR mag-create.”

The adjustment was to stay in front of Romeo and Garcia and to improve the perimeter defense. When that was accomplished (and with Greg Slaughter swatting five shots), FEU was forced to beat Ateneo with the longball. The Tams nailed three treys at the end of the game but one of which was inconsequential.

And besides, we countered and matched them with our best three-ball effort this season (we were 5-13 while they were 5-18).

We had to sweat it out and work for it. The Tams tested us and brought out some great clutch play.

To borrow a line from the championship t-shirt of the 1988 Ateneo UAAP champion team: “Great champions die hard”.

I was really nervous the first half of the game yesterday, humahataw ang FEU. But then, I knew ADMU would win!

When the score was 68-60 and a minute left on the 4th quarter, my friends from FEU sat down and became silent knowing that they would lose this game.

I'm so happy that I get to see Kiefer and have a photo opt with him after the game! LOL

Buenafe is getting his groove back. Just the kind of game he needed. Great play was him driving to the basket, drawing two bigs, while twisting in the air, he was able to drop pass to an open Slaughter for the all important slam and the lead in the 4th quarter. Simply "orgasmic"!

    Go Ateneo! One Big Fight!

BBB drums played the Dark Knight Rises Chant whenever FEU would take free throws. I think it worked since FEU missed a few free throws. They could not rise to the situation.

akala ko yong loss to UST was the start of the 'revelation', learning, "How to Beat Ateneo 101" course all the other 5 needed to do against ADMU? Last I checked, ADMU went 5-0 since? Boy, the rest didn't learn, did they?

You didn't re-quote the move by NB to field in JP-Greg at the same time, which Rick coined as Baclao-Rabeh ver 2.0. Just brilliant!

And yeah, to someone who posted it (am too lazy to search and quote), FEU's problem is fast becoming like ADU and UST's (in order of gravity) --- mental. ADU had its championship when it broke the teen-age old jinx, and Pido's days of "luhaan" (his word not mine) might have been over with that 1st round win vs ADMU. It was like, finally! Now FEU needs to hurdle that mental hump.

Grats to ADMU. Better luck next time FEU (sorry to say for the umpteenth time since 2009, when UE usurped their supposedly reserved final spot). But there's still the second round. On with the drive!

Napansin ko choker si Romeo against Ateneo. He choked against them in the past two Final series. And now, he choked in this game. I used to think that he only struggles against Ateneo because he was always defended by Kirk Long (whose defense, frankly, always makes every opposing players struggle). Kiefer is no slouch on defense as well seeing as how he improved his man to man defense by leaps and bounds. But he is still not a Kirk Long in that department. Is the Ateneo monkey still on the back of Terrence Romeo?

And did Ryan Buenafe speed up a little? He was running, driving, and spinning like he lost 30 lbs. He might have lost weight during the typhoon breaks. Baka nastranded sa bahay na walang pagkain.

Glad to see Ateneo's twin towers in action. I'd like to see more of this line up. NB should make Erram his pseudo sixth man and give all of Golla's minutes to him and a fraction of Chua's as well. Ano ba talaga height ni Erram? He's listed at 6'7'' but I see him closer to 6'9''. Ateneo has a history of understating the height of their shotblocking big men (Baclao was about 6'6'' or 6'7'' but was listed at a measly 6'4''. Japeth was closer to 6'10'' but was listed at 6'7'').

Blue Eagles Claw Tamaraws to Take Solo Lead

The Ateneo Blue Eagles started slow and ended with a vengeance to win 74-71 over the FEU Tamaraws, taking the top spot at the rankings in an action-packed game in UAAP Season 75.

Big man Greg Slaughter gave an impressive performance with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 assists to lead the Blue Eagles, who were trailing behind the FEU Tamaraws for 3 quarters. Ryan Buenafe added 8 points, JP Erram added 6 and Kiefer Ravena chipped in 12 points for the Blue Eagle effort.

On the FEU side, RR Garcia gave 21 points, Anthony Hargrove gave 12 points while Terrence Romeo struggled with 10 points in a losing effort for the Tamaraws.

The Blue Eagles were off to a sluggish start in the game with the Tamaraws happy to take advantage, leading at the end of the first half at 37-27. The Blue Eagles got their act together during the 3rd quarter, with Ryan Buenafe leading his teammates to an 13-4 rally and with a 3-pointer courtesy of Nico Elorde to close the Tamaraw lead to 1 with 45-46. Not to be outdone, the Tamaraws were able to preserve their lead with 53-49 at the start of the 4th quarter. ADMU then continued to surge in the 4th Quarter with a 9-0 rally courtesy of Slaughter, Ravena and Erram to give the Blue Eagles the lead with 69-60 with just a minute remaining. FEU continued to give ADMU scares and problems after back-to-back treys by RR Garcia and Arthur Bringas to reduce the Blue Eagle lead to 4 at 70-66 with just 40 seconds remaining. FEU then committed a very costly turnover and the Blue Eagles got their turn at the free throw line, cementing their victory.

    Scores:

    Ateneo 74 – Slaughter 17, Tiongson 12, Ravena 12, Buenafe 10, Salva 6, Erram 6, Elorde 6, Sumalinog 3, Chua 2, Gonzaga 0, Golla 0

    FEU 71 – Garcia 21, Hargrove 12, Romeo 10, A. Bringas 10, M. Bringas 7, Belo 6, Tolomia 3, Pogoy 2, Sentcheu 0, Mendoza 0, Cruz 0
