Irvine emerges unscathed from Belgium crash 02 Sep 2001
Eddie Irvine was not his talkative self after the horrific crash he had with former team mate Luciano Burti at Blanchimont on lap five of the Belgian GP. The Ulsterman was sent spinning off the track, after Burti's passing manoeuvre went wrong.
"I was taking my line out of Stavelot and into Blanchimont," he stated. "There wasn't anything unusual about my entry into the fast left hander but midway through the corner I felt an impact on the rear and after that I was a passenger. I knew Luciano was there, but I simply didn't expect him to have a go on the inside of that corner. He hit the wall very hard indeed and I'm glad he's OK.
"The head and neck restraint system played a key role in saving Luciano from serious injury today. I was the first on the scene and his head was literally pushed over to one side with the weight of the tyres. The head and neck restraint system obviously absorbed the impact of the tyres. There's nothing more I want to add at this stage. There's a Steward's Meeting after the race and only then will we have the facts as presented by both parties. I'm just thankful that Luciano is OK."
His team mate Pedro de la Rosa's race was over on lap one of the second race attempt, when he touched two cars immediately after the restart the restart. "What a terrible end to what could have been a points-scoring race for us," he lamented. "There really isn't too much to say.
"I got a relatively good start and as I was going into La Source, I noticed Heidfeld's Sauber coming-up on the inside. He obviously misjudged the situation and hit me. The impact forced my car over to the left of the track but there was somebody there and I felt another impact. I suffered a rear puncture and when I came into the pits for a new tyre the team also identified damage to the rear suspension. That was really all there was to it. Another racing incident, I know, but that's little consolation."
Accidents do happen and they cannot be really avoided... Its a good thing the safety features of the F1 car was really effective, it saved Burti's life... Irvine never intended Burti to crash straight into the tire wall and its a good thing he's ok.
hang on there, my friend.
that was purely a racing incident. there was no malice in eddie's moves.
he was even among the first few people to rush to burti's rescue. any other given sunday, he could have lunged a fist on the driver responsible for shoving him to the gravel. but in this occassion, he displayed the gentleman inside him.
all of the F1 driver's make those kinds of manouvres naman going into corners eh. More often than not, tires collide. It's just unfortunate that this time around, the tire collision caused more than two cars just veeering away from each other.
And yes, Eddie was one of the first on the scene trying to extricate Burti from underneath the tire wall. I'm sure he feels very sorry for what had happened. He nay even be blaming himself for what happened, but I definitely don't. It was an honest mistake. Accidents do happen. Burti suffered a concussion, no broken bones. Let's hope he gets back on the track soon.
btw, Kudos to the car chassis and the tire wall for saving Burti.![]()
