    Gaining muscle mass, losing weight.

Is it normal to lose weight while gaining mass? I've noticed that my shirt is tight especially on the delts, shoulder, and chest area but my jeans are very lose and I can't hold it up without a belt. I thought muscle is smaller and denser than fat. Now, I have to buy new shirt sizes.

if you didn't gain a pound but leaned out, be happy.

that means you are doing something right

how much do you weigh now and at what height?
As the physically weak man can make himself strong by careful and patient training, so the man of weak thoughts can make them strong by exercising himself in right thinking.

My height is 5'7.5" and before weight is around 190lbs and after is 174lbs. My shirt is a little tighter now than when I was heavy. My upper body size is the same when I was around 190lbs, but my face is narrower and my waist is smaller (34 vs. 30). Now I have to buy new smaller jeans and larger shirt sizes. Isn't it that I should be smaller (upper body) now due to the weight lost?

I think you lose fat, that's why you lose weight

sorry bro but i didn't get the point of this thread. for bragging? ok you said you lose fat ang gain muscle, its normal so what's the prob there???

I don't think I like my upper body size because I look the same when I was 190, except for face and waistline. I was expecting a smaller upper body frame which was my goal. I thought muscularity gives an illusion of bigger size, but for my case it's actually physical.

Since muscle is heavier than fat, I should be weighing around 185 or even more than 190 not 175 because of the same upper body size.

By the way, if you think asking the science behind this is bragging, you're a certified bunghole.

Let's all behave now guys shall we??

muscle is more dense than fat. Take a look in the mirror and that will be your guide, never the scale

well you might really be big boned, meaning anatomically you have a large upper body.. plus at 5"7" and 174 lbs thats still a little big IMO unless its pure muscle.. as blake said let the mirror be the judge if you like what you see then nevermind the scale

Its good progress by the way

I suggest you wait before buying new clothes. You can grow muscle and lose weight surprisingly fast the first couple of months of training, but both the weight loss and muscle growth tapers off eventually.

It's also possible your clothes aren't actually tight, but just now starting to fit properly. Specially if you were used to buying oversized clothes before. All the more reason to wait a bit before spending on clothes.

Don't forget that bones also get bigger (very slightly) or denser when you stress them with exercises, just like muscles and tendons. So it is possible that you get denser or bigger or stronger bones, and stronger tendons, and stronger and bigger muscles. And don't forget that more than 75% of your weight is water.
