A painting courtesy of the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design has been turned over to the management of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), and is on display at the North Avenue station, northbound side, of MRT 3 along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue near the TriNoma mall.

The artwork resulted from a memorandum of agreement between UE and the DOTC-MRT3 signed by University President Ester A. Garcia, UE CFAD Dean Celino B. Santiago and the DOTC-MRT3 General Manager, Atty. Al S. Vitangcol III. This initiative is UE’s contribution to the DOTC’s efforts at placing works of art in commercial spaces, particularly in bringing art to the commuting public by utilizing spaces in MRT stations.

Entitled “Bridges,” the abstract artwork is a quadriptych with metallic acrylic paints on canvas and measures 5’4” high and 10’ 2.5” long. Per Mr. Amorsolo, grandson of National Artist Fernando, his abstract painting signifies the metal qualities of trains and station structures: structure integrity, vibrancy and energy. The painting is also meant to attract train passengers’ gazes without their having to come to a full stop or intensively focus to appreciate, and can serve as a therapeutic respite after what is often a crowded and bustling train ride.
MRT personnel assist in mounting the framed painting.
The unveiling took place with Dean Santiago formally turning over the painting to Atty. Vitangcol in simple rites at the North Avenue Station as passengers passed by and glanced at the proceedings and the painting.
