It has been announced that unified super-bantamweight boss Nonito Donaire (29(18)-1) is to fight Mexican four-weight world champion Jorge Arce in what can only be described as a big fan friendly fight for later this year. Donaire part-unified the division this weekend, after beating Jeffrey Mathebula on points to capture the IBF title, whilst defending the WBO version. Top Rank have reportedly already agreed to the fight, which is due to take place this October.

Cameron Dunkin, who manages Donaire, said he knew the Filipinos victory over Jeffrey Mathebula Saturday would lead to a collision with Arce. " We knew that this fight (against Mathebula) leads to an Arce fight this fall, and it's a fight that's big on HBO. It's Arce either in October or November. We are committed to fight Arce, we have an agreement, verbal agreement, to fight Arce." Dunkin told Marc Anthony Reyes of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

On possible fights with current WBA king Guillermo Rigondeaux and Toshiaki Nishioka, Dunkin stated that one could happen as early as this year. "We are also in verbal agreement to fight another guy and then we start looking at WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux," Dunkin said. Another name mentioned over the last few weeks was Abner Mares. The list is long, and there are some mouth watering clashes either being negotiated or being put in the pipeline for the near future with he pound-for-pound rated Nonito Donaire.

Meanwhile, Donaire has finally hit the big time after earning his first $1 million fight purse. He reportedly picked up $750,000 as a guaranteed purse for his impressive victory over Jeffrey Mathebula (26(14)-4-2) on Saturday at the Home depot centre in California. In the fight, the Filipino superstar scored a fourth round knockdown, although the South African recovered well and wisely fought the rest of the bout from the outside. Donaire won on cards of 119-108, 118-109 and 117-110 to become a unified super-bantamweight champion.

Toshiaki Nishioka to Face Nonito Donaire Instead of Jorge Arce?

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Arce might be asking for too much money to face Donaire, which is slowly but surely driving the fight further from actuality, and Toshiaki Nishioka might have to be the replacement:

“I think [Arce's team is] getting cold feet. Top Rank president Todd [duBoef] said they're hemming and hawing and asking for a lot more money now, and that things are changing. I just don't have a good feeling," said Cameron Dunkin, Donaire’s manager.

"Arce came up to me after the fight he had with [Jesus] Rojas. Arce speaks broken English, but you can talk to him, and he said, 'I fight, I fight Nonito.' He said he was definitely fighting him, no problem. He said, 'I fight him, I fight him.' I said, 'Well, let's finally get it done.' Over and over again we've wanted to make this fight, and [the Arce side] says it's the next fight and they never show up," continued Dunkin.

As a matter of fact, the Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka (39-4-3) would put up a far more exciting and explosive fight against Donaire than Arce would. I have heard of Donaire and Nishioka mentioned before, right after Donaire knocked out Montiel. Right away I thought that it would make or a great fight and it might actually happen if Arce keeps up his negotiation process.

THE WOUND on the bandaged knuckle in his left hand still needed to fully heal, but Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has already sealed a fourth and last fight this year for Nonito Donaire Jr.

Nonito injured his knuckles two Sundays ago in his fight against Toshiyaki Nishioka of Japan whom he defeated by TKO at the Home Depot in Carson, California.

This is not the first time that the knuckles bled during a fight but Nonito is unperturbed.

"My skin is so thin it easily bruises but it also heals fast," he said during a press conference tendered for him by ABS-CBN yesterday at Annabelle's Restaurant in Tomas Morato.

He said he will be ready for his Dec. 15 fight in Mexico against Mexican Jorge Arce, whom he describes as "tough and matapang."

"It's not as if I will have to start training for the Arce fight," said Nonito who pointed out that he's in shape because his training has been continuous.

Nonito arrived in Manila yesterday morning with wife Rachel to launch a Visayan movie where he co-stars with Gloria Sevilla and another Visayan actress.

"'Palad Ta ang Nagbuot' ( Our Fate Decides) will mark the rebirth of Visayan movies after 10 years," Nonito informed us.

"In this flick you'll see a Donaire dancing, singing, crying and making you laugh," he added.

The Donaires return to the United States after the launch to start his training regimen.
