    Do you think Dolphy should get the National Artist award?

    Sure, Dolphy deserves some kind of award or recognition but one that is appropriate to what he has achieved and contributed, but I am not sure if he should be given the national artist award since the criteria for granting one are those that relate to creative/serious art and of artists with a clear and conscious advocacy that uses a medium not only to please the senses but to make us re-think or critically examine our culture, politics and history in a way that somehow makes us evolve as Filipinos. Dolphy's products was made only for pure entertainment, more than anything else, which many times deteriorated into toilet or slapstick humor. Nonetheless, Mr. Bombilya, you made me LAUGH a lot of times, for which I dearly thank you very much and will never forget them funny episodes and scenes. And all those women, well, how lucky can you get!

    So, what about you?

    (I'm re-posting my/above comment, which essentially and originally was from another thread.)

    Pasok pa rin sa banga si Pidol, pero siguro hindi sa panahong 'to. Naisip gawing National Artist kung kailan may sakit o pumanaw ang tao? Hindi funeral tribute ang pagiging National Artist at hindi yan dagliang binibigay. Kailangan pa rin irepaso ang contribution niya although I'm positive na deserving siya gawaran ng parangal na yan tulad ng iba.

    kung body of works ang paguusapan, why not? pero I wouldn't dare say his is not a serious art. In my opinion his nature as an artist is a cut above the rest.

    Serious art? What exactly is serious art? If I drew comedic comic strips (like Charles Schulz) that's internationally renowned or if I painted comedic scenes it's not 'serious art'? Dolphy was a singer and stage performer as well. Genre shouldn't be a distinguishing factor.

    Here are the imperatives:

    Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last ten years prior to nomination as well as those who have died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their death;
    Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of nationhood through the content and form of their works;
    Artists who have distinguished themselves by pioneering in a mode of creative expression or style, making an impact on succeeding generations of artists;
    Artists who have created a significant body of works and/or have consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their art form, enriching artistic expression or style; and
    Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through prestigious national and/or international recognition, awards in prestigious national and/or international events, critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works, and/or respect and esteem from peers within an artistic discipline.

    I've seen the criteria for the award and sadly I don't think Dolphy have met it.

    No, if your definition of art is the boring artsy-fartsy-fancy stuff in museums, created by angst-filled intellectual-kuno artists with tall ivory towers.

    Otherwise, yes.
