Red face Brazil Novela & why it is a must see!?

*The reason why we like Brazilian telenovelas is that they’re more realistic and yet more dream like at the same time, I know that doesn’t sound like it makes sense, but if you ever watched a telenovela from Brazil, you’ll understand why it does and why they’re so popular. The telenovelas from Brazil usually feature Brazilian themes, cultures, characters, historical and contemporary events and glossy on-location scenery. The TV Globo telenovelas have the biggest budgets, and the production values show through.

    * Rede Globo (which is according to Guiness 2000 edition the Producer of Biggest & Expensive Soap Opera in the World)

*Besides the convoluted plots, Brazilian telenovelas also approach sensitive social issues and try to present a bit of the country's actual culture, sometimes in an idealized way.
i highly recommend it 12 midnight for studio 23, Qtv, tv5 or Rpn 9

In the diamond mining town of Tijuco in Brazil, the commendador--appointed by the king of Portugal--is the ultimate authority. Having grown up in the relative security of his house, the young and beautiful Xica da Silva finds her world threatened when he decides to sell her to a whorehouse in town, refusing to recognize that a black slave girl could be his daughter. In a desperate bid to save herself, Xica steals the diamonds collected by the commendador for the king, intending to use them to escape. The king's army arrives to collect the diamonds the very next day, however, and when the loot turns up missing, the commendador is led away in chains, his family dispossessed and thrown out in the street with only the clothes on their backs. Martin, the commendador's son, swears vengeance. Xica and the other slaves, however, are sold at auction, and Xica ends up in the home of the Sergeant Major, an old man who bought her solely to slake his lust. To the town of Tijuco, however, comes the new commendador, the elegant and ruthless Joao Fernandes. Immediately struck by Xica's beauty, he manipulates the Sergeant Major into selling her to him. And thus begins a love story, filled with danger, intrigue and passion, between a willful nobleman and a crafty slave girl who rises to one day become queen.

based from the life of Francisca da Silva, one of the most famous women in Brazil, which was a freed slave who lived in the middle of the eighteenth century Tijuco village (Minas Gerais), was mistress of the Commander of the moment with whom he had thirteen children and became the richest and most powerful person in the region.

When the men go to war, the women also battle. This tale takes place in the XIX century, during a terrible civil war. Italy's revolutionary leader Garibaldi must choose between two loves: a sweet aristocratic lady or a brave woman who leaves her husband to accompany him into battle. This super-production recounts the saga of women who do not go to war but must bear pain, solitude and new passions while their husbands and fathers fight the battles.

A CASA DAS SETE MULHERES (The House of the Seven Women) is a mini-series loosely based on a part of Brazilian history (the Farroupilha War) and some very dynamic historical characters. The Farroupilha War began when the Gaúchos, people who lived in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil wanted independence from the Portugal Empire. They were unhappy with the Portuguese rule (Imperials) and started a revolt that lasted ten years, from 1835 to 1845.
While the men are away fighting, the women move into one house (Dona Ana Joaquina's house) on a ranch for safety reasons. Each woman has a different personality and absorbing storyline of love, grief, courage, desire, hate, despair, hope, bitterness, and determination. a splendid story,The actors give a strong performance. The scenery of the southern part of Brazil is breathtaking. The music, directed by Marcus Viana, is moving.

The action, drama, and romance will keep you glued to your T.V.This is a MUST SEE. It is very well written & the scenery was beautiful. There was beautiful acting. All in all, A beautiful war story.

A huge success in Brazil, The Enchanted Tale is an epic telenovela encircled by castles, kings and outlaws that tells a majestic love story between Azucena and Jesuino: two noble spirited young people who are unaware of their true origins. Beautiful Azucena and her hero Jesuíno go through many adventures in their determination to stay together.

In a faraway imaginary land the kingdoms of South Serafia and North Serafia have lived in conflict for hundreds of years. After a terrible battle, the imminent death of King Teobaldo of South Serafia and the birth of Aurora, the daughter of King Augusto of North Serafia, prompt a truce between the two kingdoms. In name of this truce the kings’ firstborns are sworn in marriage once they become of age to be the future King Felipe and Queen Aurora of a unified Serafia.

But in an expedition to find a treasure in the Brazilian backcountry King Augusto’s court is attacked by outlaws. In a desperate attempt to protect her daughter, Queen Cristina asks a couple of farmers to take care of Aurora. After the battle King Augusto goes back home devastated thinking he has lost Aurora and Cristina, who dies due to Ursula’s plan, the king’s sister-in-law and the most dangerous villain in the kingdom.

Unknowingly to the king, the princess survived and now lives in Brazil with her adoptive parents. They have named her Azucena and she grows up next to Jesuíno; they share not only an ignorance of their own and each other’s past but a childhood love that grows with them. Jesuíno lives with his mother but is unaware that his father is the city’s biggest outlaw and intends to make him follow in his footsteps when he becomes of age. Azucena has no idea she is a princess from a faraway kingdom.

Their love will be tried in many different ways. The colonel’s cruel son, Timóteo, is obsessed with Azucena and will do anything in his power to be with her. Duchess Ursula still plots against the king and his daughter in order to take over the power and wealth of the throne at any cost. There’s also sweet Doralice, who is in love with Jesuíno and makes her feelings known even though she respects his love for Azucena. And once the king discovers Aurora is alive, he goes to Brazil to enforce the marriage of his daughter to the future King Felipe.

With high quality shooting at 24 frames per second, excellent performances and cutting-edge photography, The Enchanted Tale is an innovative, timeless story about love, power, greed and secrets.

The Clone had shootings in Morocco; Family ties in Japan; Celebrity in France and An angel has fallen in the Czech Republic. They have started shooting Bellissima in Greece and Chile. They also include actors from different countries in the casting. They license series and miniseries, children’s programs, musicals and special products like the coverage of the Carnival in Rio.

During the last 30 years, Globo has commercialized over 300 productions in more than 130 countries, with a marked presence in Latin American, European, Asian and African markets.
Helena Bernardi is Globo’s Marketing and International Sales Director, and she says that the products they sell the most are, for sure, telenovelas.

What do you think is the reason for this?
“Our telenovelas combine fiction characteristics with society topics through universal subjects and emotional conflicts. They are produced with a high quality and cutting-edge technology and many of them have shootings abroad so they are more universal and appealing to the international audience.

What has been your experience in the sales of formats?
“Voce Decide has been sold as a format in 53 countries. Some of them bought the show exactly as it was aired in Brazil. Others, such as Angola, broadcasted it with a local showman but they kept the interactivity of the original program,” explains the executive.
However, in other countries, the format was adapted completely with local actors and showmen. Among the countries that bought the format, it is worth mentioning China, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Israel, Germany and Mexico.

What other products do you commercialize?
“We license series and miniseries, children’s programs, musical shows and special products, like the coverage of the Carnival in Rio. As it represents an important cultural manifestation of our country, it is appealing to the international world market. They have been bought by France, Russia, Argentina, Indonesia and many countries in Latin America.”

Helena Bernardi adds that their main objective is to strengthen the presence of their productions in Eastern Europe –a market that has grown rapidly– and Asia, which represents a potential territory for their products. The quality of technology: an ally to success

Which where the most sold telenovelas at Globo?
“I could mention The clone, for which we sold the broadcasting rights to more than 62 countries; Family ties –sold to 66 countries– and Terra nostra –sold to 84. Historically, we could also list The slave Isaura, which was broadcasted in 79 countries and Little Missy, broadcasted in 62.”

What is Globo’s challenge at the moment?
“To satisfy the needs of a sophisticated audience that has developed an expert eye to appreciate a good story when they see it.”
In view of the fact that local productions have increased in many countries –especially in the telenovela genre– Bernardi thinks it is a great opportunity for Globo: “We can develop international productions or co-productions with our partners, both in Hispanic and European markets. We have a very competitive standard since we supply the market with telenovelas that deal with universal subjects and are produced with the highest quality and cutting-edge technology,” she assures.

This is a story filled with a many other stories. Hidden in our childhood memories, these stories still stay with us secretly, awaiting only the right moment to reappear. That‘s the substance of Maria‘s journey through the world, like a small Ulysses trying to get home to her parents.
Shot in HD entirely inside a very large dome, this inspiring visually impressive miniseries about childhood targets primarily adults.
Based on the book by Carlos Alberto Soffredini and inspired by the universe of Brazilian folklore, the eight episodes of this series premiered on TV Globo in 2005. Right from the star, Director Luiz Fernando Carvalho wanted to tell this story in a different way, as though it were not reality as such, but rather an emotion representation of the real world, like a dream.
Teasing our imaginations, Hoje é Dia de Maria (Today is Maria‘s Day) offers a journey through the universal world of folklore. Are you ready to ligh up your heart?

"Hoje é Dia De Maria" (something like "Today is Mary's Day") is an outstanding fantasy, a fairy-tale about life and feelings, seen from the eyes of a little girl, Maria(Carolina Oliveira, as a child, and Leticia Sabatella, adult - who played Natasha Henstridge's maid in the movie "Bella Donna"). However, besides such an unreal atmosphere, it's not made for children.

The cast of this magnificent mini-series also includes Fernanda Montenegro (Academy Award nominee best actress in 1998 for "Central Station"), a "primadonna" of Brazilian theater, cinema and TV, among other great actors, like brilliant Osmar Prado (Maria's father) and Stênio Garcia (Asmodeu), in one of their best appearances ever. By the way, Asmodeu, the devil, is played by seven different actors. What a finding!

Rodrigo Santoro (from "Charlie's Angels, "Love Actually") plays a sad "birdman", a young man who lives imprisoned in a body of a bird, in a place where the night never comes out, and everybody lives under a permanent sunset. In Maria's childhood, Rodrigo is the tinplate bird who protects the little girl Maria (Carolina, magnificent in her debut as an actress),when she decides, in her sweet innocence, wander round and round through the streets.

Rodrigo's character will fall in love with the adult and beautiful Maria (Leticia), since the day she finds him wounded and saves the bird of dying with an arrow in his chest.

The story reminds us the movie "Ladyhawke" (with Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer) a bit, but you probably have never watched anything so beautiful as this story. The music is wonderful and the sceneries are all built with paintings! Creative, outstanding!!! The plot mixes some elements of the traditional fairy-tales and others of the richest Brazilian popular culture of the countryside. That's a finding and works it out very well. All the characters talk like the country-people of the Northeast, what demonstrates the careful work of the director and cast with this production and makes of "Hoje é Dia De Maria" something special.

Director Luiz Fernando Carvalho has done once more a brilliant work in "Hoje É Dia De Maria". This mini-series would be compared to his debut as a movie director ("Lavoura Arcaica"). The sensibility of his directing can be seen in both productions, what is a warranty of quality for the audience.

Definitely, this mini-series is a must-see, a small masterpiece which deserves to be found out, as well as little Maria's discoveries in her imaginary journey.

soaps whereby 50% is real and the other 50% is more glamourous and fictional.everyone likes different things and some people enjoy the escapism that tv provides whilst others enjoy seeing harsh reality portrayed in fictional circumstances. soaps are about real people's lives, and how to improve them! Their soaps touch such topics as RELIGION, NATURE, GENDER, SEX, RACISM, MUSIC, ART, DANCING, CARNIVALS, POOR, RICH, FROM FISHER MEN TO SENATES AND SO ON. I also like Brazilian soaps cuz the film lots of outdoors. YOU CAN ACTUALLY VISUALIZE BRAZIL through their soaps! They give hope to people, they call upon peace, love, unity, compassion, and so on. Brazilian soaps are also VERY COLORFUL and VERY FAST MOVING. There isnt going to be an episode that one misses and does not regret later on. IF YOU'VE MISSED AN EPISODE, YOU MIGHT GET CUT UP IN MISSING SOME PLOTS.

AS OF THE SOUNDRACKS PLAYING FOR EACH CHARACTER, I JUST LOVE IT!!!! Everytime a cirtain song starts playing, I already know next scene will be about cirtain character. You get so attached to these characters, that even after the soap is over, every time you listen to their songs, you remember of the characters, their actions, their stories... It's lovely! You just have to expiriance it to fall in love with it. Brazilian soaps only last for 9 months each. But that's the beauty of it! You can watch a soap following its story everyday, like reading a book! In fact, all Brazilian soaps are written by writers as novels. First they were published in news papers, then on radios, and now on TVs! Brazilian actors are outstanding!!! REAL!!!! ALIVE!!!! Stories will capture your heart forever. You will come back to watch soaps over and over. Each with different story style, actors, music, depending on who writes them. There are some people who only like sirtain writers and only watch their soaps. I love all of them! I love brazil. Also, it is not true that Brazilian soaps only show the good side of Brazil. Through Brazilian soaps i've learned the low economy problems, politics, poor people's lives, their suffering. And that only made me love Brazil even more!!! So how can you not like Brazilian soaps when they are pure reflection of the country itself? To not like Brazilian Soaps is to not like Brazil! Even guys watch soaps in Brazil! And i'm not saying some, all who have time do!!!Also, Brazilian soaps teach something, each have a lesson about life.

Little Missy is the story of a heroic young woman who represents the generation who fought against the injustice of slavery with their ideals of freedom and equality.

The story begins when Little Missy, the Baron of Araruna‘s daughter, and Rodolfo, the son of the family‘s lawyer, return from the provincial capital having completed their studies. This is exactly two years before the "Golden Law" when Republican ideals made abolition a near certainty.

The movement has already been victorious in most cities, but the town of Araruna is one of the last bastions of slavery. Here, the Baron of Araruna imposes his will on the entire population to prevent the spread of abolitionist ideas. That is, until Little Missy returns, bringing with her anti-slavery notions of her own; and becomes the great political and ideological adversary of her own father.

Little Missy falls in love with Rodolfo when she discovers that he is not only an abolitionist but an activist, who, in the still of the night, enters the slave compounds, opens the gates and releases the slaves, later handing them over to organizations that help them on their way to freedom. Problems arise when her father discovers that Rodolfo is on the opposing side.

The Presence Of Anita is a miniseries written by Manoel Carlos (Anything For Love/Family Ties). An amazing story about love, passion and the traps of destiny. Anita is an angel faced teenager who seduces a writer, destroying his family and his life. According to her, nothing is coincidence. Destiny is already written and she cannot change her fate...

Telenovela ‘Passione’ wins prize in South Korea.

Telenovela “Passione” won the Silver Trophy at the Seoul International Drama Awards in the Drama Series Category. The award was presented today, August 31, to writer Silvio de Abreu and director Denise Saraceni in Seoul, South Korea. ‘Passione‘ ran against other productions from Korea, China, Australia, Canada, Argentina, and Romania. Thrilled, Sivio de Abreu thanked everyone, “We are very proud of this award and we thank the committee of the Seoul Drama Awards for this great honor. Hopefully in the near future, other Brazilian telenovelas will be able to feel the same emotion. This award will help to bring our countries and passions together more and more.”

Besides the award, the telenovela received another nomination: Tony Ramos competed in the category for Best Actor. Since 2006 the award has been given annually by the Seoul Drama Organizing Committee, and is considered to be the most important awards in the region. It is the second time that a production from TV Globo competes. In 2007, the telenovela “Little Missy” was among the finalists.

It is a great honor for the Brazilian distributor to win a prize in Asia, where the drama production is extensive, especially in South Korea. “We know the importance of this award and one of the winners will be proud. It is good to know that the products we offer to the international market are recognized for their distinctive and high quality content production”, said Raphael Corrêa Netto, director of International Sales at TV Globo.

Globo TV International has shown a growth trend in the region. Since 2009 in South Korea, Telenovelas, miniseries, series, and documentaries have been televised daily from TV Globo. Last year, productions had been sold to markets such as China, Thailand, Taiwan, Mongolia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The growth is sustainable with this year´s sale of “City of Men” to New Zealand, Channel 5 of MediaCorp, the largest media source in Singapore broadcasts “India-A Love Story”, while in China, the “Woman” series is broadcast on the CCTV8 channel.

‘Passione’ was aired during primetime TV Globo between May 2010 and January 2011. In its last chapter, the plot reached an audience of 52 points with 77% share and 31.5 million viewers. The plot has been sold to over 14 countries. Written by Silvio de Abreu and directed by Denise Saraceni, both from the telenovela “Belissima”, the story is based on family relationships and the secrets of four central characters who live in Brazil and in Italy. The cast features stars such as Fernanda Montenegro (Nominated for an Oscar in the film “Central do Brazil”), Tony Ramos, who also competed for an award for his character in the telenovela, Rodrigo Lombardi (“India-A Love Story”), and Marina Ximenes (“The Favorite”).

Filmed and distributed in HD format, ‘Passione’ is set in one of the largest metropolis in the world, São Paulo, and around one of the most internationally recognized beauties of Rome such as Castle Sant’Angelo, Colosseum, and the Vatican. Both the writer and director also chose to record the majority of the scenes in the center of Italy, in Florence and in Siena, Tuscany.

Blood Ties wins the best Telenovela at the International Emmy Awards

‘Blood Ties’ was chosen as Best Telenovela for the 39th International Emmy Awards. The Globo TV’s director of international entertainment Guilherme Bokel and the SIC’s General Director Luís Marques accepted the award on Monday 21st in New York. The award ceremony took place at the Hilton Hotel, during the gala dinner. With the supervision of the Brazilian author, Aguinaldo Silva, this was the first coproduction realized in partnership with Rede Globo and the Portuguese network SIC.

‘Blood Ties’ competed with three other finalists: ‘Araguaia’ from Rede Globo, “Contra las Cuerdas” from Argentina and “Precious Hearts” from the Philippines. All in all, there were 1000 programs entered from 61 countries, to dispute the titles in the 10 different categories that were analyzed by more than 800 judges from 67 countries.

The award ceremony, announced by the actors Danny Pino e Blanca Soto, was enthusiastically celebrated by Bokel. “This award is the crowning glory in the short history of the internationalization of Rede Globo productions. This is the third co-production international and the first in which we were involved from the text supervision with Aguinaldo Silva, to the final cut of each episode. The Emmy symbolizes the recognition of the Globo brand of quality and makes us believe that we’re on the right track”, said Bokel. The statuette won by the actress represents the most important award in the television industry.

With script direction by Pedro Lopes from SP Televisão, supervision by Aguinaldo Silva and directed by Patrícia Sequeira, ‘Blood Ties’ was shown between September 2009 and October 2010 by SIC in Portugal. The telenovela is a story rooted in the Portuguese reality, with dramas and conflicts of modern society. The plot of love and hate is between two sisters separated by destiny, where love prevails. Filmed in quintessentially Portuguese scenes Viana do Castelo, Lago do Alqueva and the Mercado da Ribeira in Lisbon, the story of ‘Blood Ties’ also had scenes shot in Rio de Janeiro and set in the Amazon. The actress Susana Vieira played a special role in ten episodes and relived the character Lara Romero from the miniseries ‘Fifties Club’.

This was the second International Emmy won by Rede Globo in 2011, and the seventh in the company’s history. In September this year, ‘Jornal Nacional’ won a statuette for the coverage of the Complexo do Alemão invasion. In 1981, the winner was ‘A Arca de Noé’ and a year later it was ‘Morte e Vida Severina’. In 1983, Roberto Marinho won the prize in the direction category and in 2009 the telenovela ‘India: A Love Story’ won the honor. Rede Globo continues to be the only Brazilian TV network to win an Emmy.

This year, five other productions were finalists and competed for the award: ‘All My Life’ for Best Arts Programming; ‘Under the Law’, for Best Drama; ‘Breaking Up’ for Best Comedy; and ‘Destiny River’ for the Best Telenovela category. Adriana Esteves and Fábio Assunção also competed for the Best Actor and Actress award, for their work in ‘Songs of Betrayal’.

The story is set in the 1920’s and presents a spontaneous and sensual woman, foreign to the customs at the time, who will put human feelings and moral issues to the test: love, betrayal, hate, resentment and forgiveness. ‘Gabriela’ was also a great success in Brazil and worldwide in the 70’s, with Sônia Braga in the main role.
In the first episode of the storyline, Gabriela and her uncle retreat in the direction of Ilhéus seeking a better life. This chapter also includes the encounter between Gabriela and the Syrian man Nacib (Humberto Martins, ‘India – A Love Story’). The scene was recorded in the historical center of Canavieiras, Bahia, and had the participation of 150 extras in costume.
The remake of ‘Gabriela’ was written by Walcyr Carrasco (‘Watercolors of Love). The storyline counts on well-known actors such as Antonio Fagundes (‘Irrational Heart’) and Marcelo Serrado (‘Looks & Essence’) and special participation by the singer Ivete Sangalo.

A man whose determination and can-do spirit changed not only his own life, but also the course of an entire nation. Torn between his two passions, Toni must surmount many difficulties as he strives to make his dreams come true. A period super-production.
