UAAP Players Cover "Call Me Maybe"

    Source: http://www.tmrhoops.com/uaap-players...call-me-maybe/

ABS-CBN Sports released its version of the viral video of the hit song Call me maybe on Thursday.

It features UAAP players goofing around to the song in front of the camera.

    Video can be viewed here.

Some of the notable players in the video include Joshua Webb and Jeron Teng of La Salle, Keifer Ravena and Nico Salva of Ateneo, Emmanuel Mbe and Bobby Ray Parks of NU, Mike Silungan of UP, Jeric Fortuna of UST and Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia of FEU.

So how did the players do? Like basketball players.

Props to the players who made an effort to entertain but it was obvious that most of them are not used to trying to be cute while dancing to a bubble gum pop song in front of the camera.

While players like Webb, Ravena, Mbe, Romeo and the entire Red Warriors team were natural in front of the camera, I would bet that other players like Silungan, Parks, Teng, Garcia and Fortuna would rather be playing in a pressure-packed Final Four game.

Either way, ABS-CBN just had to do something pop in its attempt to thwart Aksyon TV in the ratings game.

For years, ABS-CBN controlled the collegiate basketball space but the entry of Aksyon TV presents a legitimate challenge.

The latter already introduced several innovations to their coverage of the NCAA, which include the addition of PBA players and coaches in their broadcast panels and the integration of social media content.

The battle between the two network giants has become more interesting with the NCAA’s decision to go head-to-head with the UAAP.

The NCAA, which used to hold games on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to avoid conflict with the UAAP, are now playing Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which means Thursdays and Saturdays are now a battle for viewership between the two leagues.

The 10 Best 'Call Me Maybe' Covers

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez & Ashley Tisdale

Few cover videos ever beat the original, that is until Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez get involved. Carly Rae Jepsen might not have climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 if it weren't for The Biebs and Co. endorsing her catchy single. Their video, which sparked the "Call Me" craze, raked in a million views during the first 24 hours. The power couple of pop danced with fake mustaches and banana telephones alongside pals Ashley Tisdale, Big Time Rush, Boys Like Girls and more.

    Katy Perry & Friends

Inflatable monkeys, iPhones and mixed drinks are all heavily featured in Katy Perry and friends' version of "Call Me Maybe." No stranger to being goofy, a purple-haired Perry bounces across the screen while lip-syncing, then plays director, shouting out stage directions to her pals. Shot during Coachella weekend, the video was a response to the Biebs' version, with Perry giving him a shout-out at the end.

Jimmy Fallon, the Roots & Carly Rae

Jimmy Fallon and the Roots can do no wrong, and when the Carly Rae herself is thrown into the mix -- with a rainbow-bright xylophone -- the "Late Night" crew gets even better. Plus, Carly plays the triangle, while Jimmy tackles the tambourine and lends some impressive background vocals. And the icing on the catchy pop tune cake: Questlove brought out a kazoo at the end. What's not to love?

    The Harvard Baseball Team

Harvard guys can have fun too, as evidenced by the baseball team's choreographed, back-of-the-van lip sync. How's that for a curveball? They could spice up their dance moves a bit -- especially the napping player out in left field -- but all in all we'd say this one was a home run. The entertaining video spawned dozens of replies from university sports teams across the country. Road trip, anyone?

    Fun.

If you want a little indie in your "Call Me Maybe," look no further than Fun. These guys slowed their cover down a teeny bit, focusing on the acoustic guitar and orchestral sounds from the keyboards. Lead singer Nate Ruess' vocals seem to catch a desperation in the lyrics not found in the poppy, catchy original. It's hard to beat Jepsen's version, but these guys sure come close.

    President Barack Obama

You know the internet is doing its job right when a YouTube user (appropriately named Barackdubs) spends countless hours cutting together bits of the president's speeches until we have this masterpiece: Barack Obama singing "Call Me Maybe." Well… sort of. Obama's team should really consider using this as a campaign tool, since he's calling on the American youth to vote for him later this year.

Miss USA Girls, Andy Cohen & Donald Trump

While Donald Trump just sat against a blank wall, eerily staring into the camera, the women of the Miss USA pageant showed off their talents and beauty in their backstage "Call Me Maybe" cover. And, as one would expect, these ladies really know how to work a camera. Bravo's Andy Cohen and E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic both joined in the video, dancing and joking to the pop hit. For a little extra fun, look for the Miss USA tribute-within-a-tribute to the Harvard baseball team.

    The Staples Center Staff

Everybody dance now! No, seriously, it's like they literally got everyone who works in the Staples Center to dance for this clip. We're talking camera guys, concession workers, ushers, cheerleaders, even TNT reporter Craig Sager, all getting down to the "Call Me" chorus. Maybe the Lakers would have made it to the NBA Finals had they had a cameo… but now we'll never know.

    Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders

Somehow, it's only logical "Call Me Maybe" covers would eventually lead to cheerleaders in bikinis. Miami Dolphin cheerleaders, in this case. These scantily-clad women prance around pools, beaches and even take a dive in a ball pit while flirting to the camera on their own version of Jepsen's No. 1 hit. With over 4.5 million views, it's doubtful they have problems getting boys to call them… maybe.

Tay Zonday, The 'Chocolate Rain' Guy

Singing in front of a microphone and camera, Tay Zonday (better known as the "Chocolate Rain" guy) puts his baritone spin on the Carly Rae Jepsen hit. Falling somewhere in between a toad and an opera star, Zonday's version sounds more than a little creepy compared to Jepsen's No. 1. We probably won't be calling him anytime soon.

    And Carly Rae Jepsen's Original...

Like we said, nothing beats the original, and when all the covers are said and done, it's Carly Rae's catchy tune that sent the song to the top of the Hot 100 chart. Her fun video and it's twist ending are the perfect compliment to the song, which has sold 3.3 million downloads to date according to Nielsen SoundScan.

why use the players when they could've used the cheerleaders?

Hahaha, oo!

How times have changed.

Sino ba may pakulo nito? Malamang ABS-CBN / Studio 23 ano?

The first time Studio 23 hosted UAAP, they just couldn't resist being themselves (ABS-CBN, Studio 23). They had Carlos Agassi perform during half-time of the season opening Ateneo La Salle Men's Basketball match. They introduced the poor guy with so much fanfare as the Amir of Rap. What the hell did they think this was? ASAP? To his credit, Agassi finished his performance despite the boos from both green and blue sides.

This cover "may" have been a good idea ("may", meaning it's open to debate), but with the execution as badly performed as it was, this falls flat on its face. If the players weren't up to it, there was no way this would have turned out naturally. Goshdarn, you shouldn't do things just because you can.
