ABS-CBN Sports released its version of the viral video of the hit song Call me maybe on Thursday.
It features UAAP players goofing around to the song in front of the camera.
Video can be viewed here.
Some of the notable players in the video include Joshua Webb and Jeron Teng of La Salle, Keifer Ravena and Nico Salva of Ateneo, Emmanuel Mbe and Bobby Ray Parks of NU, Mike Silungan of UP, Jeric Fortuna of UST and Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia of FEU.
So how did the players do? Like basketball players.
Props to the players who made an effort to entertain but it was obvious that most of them are not used to trying to be cute while dancing to a bubble gum pop song in front of the camera.
While players like Webb, Ravena, Mbe, Romeo and the entire Red Warriors team were natural in front of the camera, I would bet that other players like Silungan, Parks, Teng, Garcia and Fortuna would rather be playing in a pressure-packed Final Four game.
Either way, ABS-CBN just had to do something pop in its attempt to thwart Aksyon TV in the ratings game.
For years, ABS-CBN controlled the collegiate basketball space but the entry of Aksyon TV presents a legitimate challenge.
The latter already introduced several innovations to their coverage of the NCAA, which include the addition of PBA players and coaches in their broadcast panels and the integration of social media content.
The battle between the two network giants has become more interesting with the NCAA’s decision to go head-to-head with the UAAP.
The NCAA, which used to hold games on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to avoid conflict with the UAAP, are now playing Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which means Thursdays and Saturdays are now a battle for viewership between the two leagues.
