There's Something About Marian By JASER A. MARASIGAN
    November 9, 2011

When Marian Rivera arrived at the shoot location, she was glowing with positive vibe. She warmly greeted everyone, and said she couldn't wait to splurge on her favorite ice cream after. It just made her feel like a kid again, she mused.

But Marian insisted she has matured a whole lot since being almost constantly embroiled in some sort of controversy the past few months.

“Dati mahirap tanggapin para sa akin na bakit hindi ako naiintindihan ng mga tao. Maraming mga intriga na hindi ko kinaya.

Hindi ko naman alam na ganito pala ang showbiz. Pero kahit maraming bumabatikos, ipinagpapatuloy ko ito kasi mahal ko ang trabaho ko at marami rin akong mga nakilala na nagmamahal sa akin,” she said.

You can’t please everyone – Marian knows this better than most. More than her stunning mestiza looks, the Filipina-Spanish actress is known for her feisty personality. Her being transparent is what gets her into trouble, she admitted.

Yet no matter what hardships come her way, Marian always manages to come out on top, and a better person.

“Kung ang ordinaryong tao nga may mga ganyang isyu, kahit sa office or sa school pa ‘yan. Nagkataon lang na nasa showbiz ako, nai-interview, nakikita ng mga tao, napapalabas sa TV. I’m very transparent. Alam ng mga fans ko kung sino talaga ako.”

    BLESSED AND GRATEFUL
Marian reveals that her family was against her getting into showbiz because they know her all too well.

“Ayaw nilang lahat. Kasi alam nila ‘yung personality ko na ganito ako. May mga pagkakataong nami-misinterpret ka. Pero dahil napagdaanan ko na ata lahat, ngayon kapag may naririnig akong hindi maganda, hindi na ako apektado kasi alam ko na kung paano i-handle,” she explained.

Her mother wanted her to become a nurse. “Gusto talaga ni mama na mag Nursing ako. Kasi may kakilala siya sa London kung saan pwede sana akong magtrabaho.

Sabi ko sa kanya hindi ko talaga kaya ang Nursing. Unang-una takot ako sa injection. Kapag may mga naaaksidente madali akong mag-panic. Kaya Psychology ang kinuha ko,” related Marian, who hopes to go back again to school one day and take up either a culinary or a baking course.

“Bago ako pumasok sa showbiz, hindi pwedeng hindi ako nakatapos ng pag-aaral. Lahat pwede ko raw gawin kapag nakatapos na ako. Siyempre bilang artista, mas maganda na meron kang ibang maipagmamalaki. Nag-artista ako pero graduate ako ng college,” she continued.

Since shooting to superstardom not a long time ago (her breakout role came in 2007 when she played the title role in the Philippine remake of Mari-Mar), Marian continues to be blessed and she’s more than grateful.

    DIFFERENT SIDES
Marian has gone on to play many roles that showed different sides of her, from a superhero in “Darna” to a mysterious woman in “Ang Babaeng Hinugot Sa Aking Tadyang”, and a number of comedic roles on TV and movies. Now she can be seen playing the title role in “Amaya” on GMA, which continues to be a top-rater on primetime.

Since it is loosely based on early Philippine history, the show has been recommended by some teachers as a nightly viewing habit for the students.

“First time na nagkaroon ng soap about history. Parang naging educational show na siya kasi nirerequire din siya sa mga schools na panoorin. Masarap sa pakiramdam na nakatulong ka sa mga bata, lalo na sa education nila, may natutunan sila,” Marian said, adding that the cast and crew make sure to produce each episode as realistically as possible.

At the same time, Marian has learned a lot from doing the show.

“May mga natututunan akong mga ancient Tagalog words. May mga UP historians kami na kasama sa set para maki-sang-ayon o makapagbigay ng kaalaman tungkol sa mga nangyari noong araw.

May one-onone kami ng director ko at ipinapaliwanang niya ‘yung mga research nila. Kaya kahit ako marami rin akong natutunan,” said Marian, who, apart from “Amaya,” is also busy wrapping up work for the Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Ang Panday 2.”

    FOOD FOR HER SOUL
Before pursuing an acting career, Marian worked at the National Mental Hospital after earning a degree in B.S. Psychology at the De La Salle University- Dasmariñas. She was assigned to attend to kids with depression.

“May isa akong pasyente, na-depress siya kasi hindi siya kayang pag-aralin ng parents niya. Naapektuhan man ako ng problema niya, pero hindi ko pwedeng ipakita. Kinakain niya ang buhok niya. Kaya kung mapapansin mo lahat sa mental hospital maikli lahat ng buhok, babae at lalaki,” she recalled.

Amid the fame and popularity, Marian continues to involve herself in anything that feeds her soul. So aside from helping out long-time boyfriend Dingdong Dantes with his education advocacy through Yes Pinoy Foundation, Marian is now a volunteer for the Philippine Red Cross.

She is currently promoting its Million Volunteer Run program, which will be held simultaneously in Manila and other key cities and municipalities of the country on Dec. 4.

Aside from the fun run, Marian promises to actively support other Red Cross missions, including visiting disaster areas and penitentiaries.

    AT HER HAPPIEST
Marian says she is at her happiest when she is surrounded by family and knowing that she is making people happy through the work that she does.

“Kahit maraming intriga at maraming bumabatikos, mahal ko ang trabaho ko. Ipinagpatuloy ko ito kasi marami rin akong mga nakilala na nagmamahal sa akin.

Kahit na maraming trabaho, kapag mahal mo talaga ang ginagawa mo, walang pagod. Marami pa akong pangarap sa buhay, ‘yun ang nagbibigay ng inspirasyon sa akin. Dahil sa trabaho na meron ako, nae-enjoy ng pamilya ko kung ano ang meron ako ngayon,” she ended, flashing that signature smile that has endeared her to many people.

MARIAN: “No choice siya! Kailangang sundin niya, gusto ko ito. No choice siya.”

MARIAN: "To be honest, hindi na.

JO-ANN: The thing, Marian, kasi, we’ve interviewed you sa YES!. And we all fell in love with you talaga, walang biro. Can you [explain]…?

“Parang lahat, 'Okay, this is me, ‘eto yung gusto n’yong makita.’

Sabi nga, I’m not a robot.”

Sexy Talk with Marian Rivera by Ricky LO

    What is sexy to her?

“Ang sexy para sa akin, kahit anong klase ang isuot mo na wala kang ipinapakitang skin ay sexy ka.”

    With boyfriend Dingdong Dantes:

What do I find sexy in him? His eyes and his eyebrows!

    When does she feel sexy?

“When I’m in heels. You see, I’m fond of wearing flats, wala lang. But if I have to attend an event, I have to wear heels. I stand straight and that’s when I feel sexy.”

What part of her body does she consider the sexiest?

    “My butt, ayyyyy!!!”

And what part of a man’s body…Dingdong’s body…does she consider the sexiest?

“The shoulders. Iba ‘yung dating if a guy has broad shoulders. Macho ang dating para sa akin.”

    Sexiest book?

(Thinks hard) “Hindi ako mahilig magbasa ng books, eh.”

    Okay, sexiest magazine.

    “Siempre Cosmo. Everything is there.”

    Sexiest movie.

“Let me think.” (Thinks hard) “I can’t think of any. I rarely watch movies kasi, eh. If ever I do, I watch mostly cartoons.”

    Sexiest musical instrument.

    “Flute.”

    Sexiest song.

“You Changed My Life In A Moment. I love old love songs. My iPad is loaded with those kinds of songs.”

    Sexiest TV show.

“Amaya, what else? Lahat ng lalaki d’un nakabahag. Sexy sila, di ba?”

    Sexiest food.

    “Chocolate.”

    Sexiest car.

    “Audi, a two-door sports car.”

    Sexiest perfume.

“Baby Cologne. I’m not fond of perfumes. Even for tapings, ginagamit ko baby cologne lang. Gusto ko light lang, amoy-baby. Ayoko ng matapang na amoy.”

    Sexiest clothes.

    “Lingerie.”

    Sexiest concert.

    “The one of Beyoncé.”

    Sexiest time of day.

“Early morning when I wake up. Who do I have in mind at that time? Si Dong! But first, I stand in front of the mirror so the first person I really see is myself, pa-emote-emote na ako n’yan.”

    Sexiest part of the house.

“My bed. Everything is there already — my TV set, my iPad, my laptop, everything. I have a big bed. It’s my comfort zone.”

    Sexiest animal.

“Snake. Like the one that’s with me in Amaya. It’s real! The more you touch it, the more it becomes maamo. It knows me already, kaya sumusunod sa sinasabi ko sa kanya.”

    Sexiest billboard.

“The one of Anne Curtis (for a perfume). Sexy siya d’un.”

    Sexiest face of a man.

“Diyos ko, mayroon pa bang iba…siya na ‘yon!”

So what does she find sexy in Dingdong’s face?

    “His eyes, his eyebrows.”

Sexiest scene she has seen in a movie.

“It usually happens in the ending when the lovers are reunited after a long separation. I find happy endings very sexy.”

Sexiest scene she has ever done.

“Those in (my GMA soap) Marimar. It was my first time to do a love scene underwater (with Dingdong).”

Sexiest thing she has done to herself.

“I do it in the bathroom — always! I’m vain, you know. When I don’t have a shoot or taping, I linger in the bathroom and really pamper myself. I would scrub my hair, my whole body, at nag-a-apply ako ng moisturizer. Gusto ko nagpa-paraffin ng mga kamay at paa. Then, pa-manicure at pa-pedicure. Pampering myself is the sexiest thing that I can think of doing to myself.”

Sexiest thing she has done to or with anybody.

“Ipagluto, ipaghanda ng mga kinakailangan niya.”

    Sexiest fantasy.

    “Secret!”

Name three men that you find the sexiest.

“At the moment, I can think of only one, so tatlong DD, DD at DD.”

    THE BLESSINGS OF AUTHENTICITY
    Posted By Inner Peace

These recent few weeks have given us an overdose of not so good news in the world of entertainment. Broken relationships, startling public revelations, allegations about alcohol addiction, abortion and gender confusion were met with mixed reactions of anger, moral chaos, ridicule, disgust, sympathy and faint cries for understanding. The public is left with mouths agape, fingers pointing every which way and the noise is so loud your own moral convictions could possibly drown if you were not so solidly grounded.

A big part of the noise out there is the crashing sound of “idols” falling from the pedestals people have put them on. They all looked so perfect like the proverbial Ken and Barbie dolls but soon the public discovers that these famous personalities too have feet of clay just like the rest of us. Stars that have captured the hearts and imagination of many have been unmasked and the public is given a glimpse into the realities behind the “image” we were conditioned to respect and appreciate.

Celebrities are not much different than those super heroes popularized by comic books and movies. Behind their public persona and advocacies, the real identities of these beloved characters are very well hidden but even their super powers cannot shield them from the difficult challenges of living compartmentalized lives. Everyone admires and applauds them but nobody really knows the real person behind the public image. Their stories always reveal a conflict between the man within and the champion without. And the sad reality is that super hero or not, people who have to hide behind a mask often have to deal with feelings of loneliness, emptiness, confusion and the absence of real joy.

Masquerading is perhaps to a large extent dictated by the industry and urged by society’s high expectations. A lot of it may also be self-imposed to present an “image” through which the individual hopes to prove his or her worth. But like a really good pair of shoes, the longer one wears a mask, the more comfortable it feels and the mask stays on until it becomes hard to discern where the façade ends and reality begins. The “image” creeps into the personal life and suddenly everything becomes one big charade. Acting becomes a lifestyle instead of just a career. When the unexpected happens, the masks fall off, secrets are revealed, lives are unveiled and careers are forced to hang in the balance. As spectators we end up asking ourselves – is it ever worth all that?

As I reflected on these things my thoughts went to Marian Rivera and her relentless pursuit to keep it real to the point of being maligned and misunderstood. She struggled to defy the norms imposed by the industry to wear a “mask” and present an image that people can accept and love. She refused to dance to the tune of hypocrisy and fought to present her real self to the public, flaws and all, even at the risk of being rejected by a highly-opinionated and oftentimes judgmental audience and a very demanding entertainment press. And we all know how tough she’s had it in her first few years when she didn’t understand why people can’t appreciate her transparency and take her just as she was back then.

Marian paid a high price to keep it real in her life and career but the rewards and blessings that came after were proof that authenticity brings with it tremendous blessings. Not only did Marian achieve phenomenal success in her career, she is presently without doubt the most loved and admired female artist of her generation. The public has accepted her for who she is with all of her weak points, limitations, imperfections and even the foolish mistakes she makes every once in a while. There are no surprises where her personality, character, passions and convictions are concerned. She is loved both as Marian Rivera, the actress and as Marian, the person. Even those who were once critical are now starting to see and appreciate the beautiful heart that lies within. She has proven that one doesn’t have to wear a mask to hide who you really are because people do understand that no one is excused from the struggles of life and that we all fail at one time or another, even those from whom much is expected.

Marian’s struggle to uphold the value of authenticity in show business can be a source of inspiration for us in our ordinary lives. Writing this piece brought me to a fresh realization that authenticity brings with it the inherent joy and freedom to be who we really are without pretense and cover ups to increase our value in people’s eyes. Authenticity frees us from the pressure to impress and compete for people’s approval and acceptance. It enables us to enjoy genuine relationships because we know we are loved for who we are and are able to love the same way in return. But the best realization for me is this – that living an authentic life allows me to embrace my individuality and celebrate my own uniqueness which is God’s way of telling me I am special in His eyes. I don’t have to be some other person I was not created to be and the same is true with you.

Marian Rivera Is The Only Kapuso Star In 2012 TRU Study Favorite Celebs Survey

According to “The Teen Research Unlimited (TRU) Study: 2012 Philippine Edition,” which was presented to the media on Wednesday, the 42-year-old Padilla is the favorite TV/movie star among Filipino teens, ages 12-19 years old.

Padilla is also tops among young Filipino adults, ages 20-24.

Abegail Barcelona, associate research director for the TRU study, noted that during the survey period of June-July 2011, Padilla was starring in the hit ABS-CBN primetime action series “Guns and Roses” with Bea Alonzo.

Award-winning actor Coco Martin, 30, debuted at No. 2 among both teens and young adults in the survey.

Barcelona attributed Martin’s high ranking to his hit ABS-CBN primetime drama series “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin.”

Kapamilya stars dominated the Top 5 favorite stars among Filipino teens and young adults.

Among teens, actress Kim Chiu and Angel Locsin tied for fourth place, while singer-actress Sarah Geronimo was at No. 5. Chiu didn’t place on the survey of young adults.

Butch Francisco Salutes Marian Rivera by Butch Francisco

This is the reason why I salute Marian Rivera. She knows how to say thank you even for the littlest nice thing you say about her.

I’ve been asked a hundred times by people outside of showbiz if she really is difficult as she was often pictured by her detractors. Oh, she definitely had bad press. Why do you think showbiz outsiders never tire asking me if she truly is quarrelsome?

My answer to that? I never experienced anything unpleasant in any of my dealings with her as in never. On the contrary, she is the most approachable and accommodating among the young showbiz stars today.

If ever she got into any fight, I suspect that she had been provoked. Maybe patience is not one of her virtues. But neither is she the type who would allow herself to be trampled on. It is her right to fight back.

My fondness for Marian began when I saw her audition for Marimar. I wrote about it and she in gratitude sent me a token with a little note. I no longer remember what was in that tiny package and what became of it, but I treasure the note that showed not only appreciation, but also respect. In return I also showered her with respect.

I can’t categorically state that we are close friends, but my respect for her will always be there.

It all started with two simple words: Thank you.

A Little Respect For Marian Rivera By Cai Subijano

Show business is a fickle industry, much like the weather we’ve been having lately. Showbiz can rain on any given artista’s parade without warning and turn up the heat when someone’s in the hot seat. Taking in Marian Rivera’s six-year career, complete with the requisite breaks and career milestones, some 25 to 30 lucrative endorsements at any given point and enough Internet and Twitter controversy to bring a bearded Middle Eastern tyrant down, it’s hard to believe that she almost didn’t get her big break. To be more specific: If Angel Locsin didn’t jump the fence from GMA to ABS CBN six years ago, Marian still might be playing supporting roles today. Or working her old job at a mental hospital. Seriously.

Tracing our steps back to 2005, it was the year GMA got the rights to remake the hit early ’90s Mexican telenovela Marimar, and with Angel as the studio’s resident crown jewel at the time, naturally, the title role was hers. While Angel is still a huge star in her own right, when she signed with rival network ABS CBN, GMA wasted no time finding her replacement. To put it mildly: Angel out, Marian in. “Well, everybody knows that Marimar was really for (Angel),” Marian told Star entertainment editor Ricky Lo in 2009, “But I think one of the reasons why the public accepted me as Marimar is that siguro nakita naman nila na talagang pinag-sikapan kong gampanan ‘yung role ng mabuti. I really worked hard for it. Ibinuhos ko ang sarili ko doon sa role. I believe na kung nasaan man ako ngayon, pinag-hirapan ko ‘yon.”

The woman speaks the truth. Her audition tape for Marimar is still on Youtube, if you want to see for yourself. Perhaps the most astounding quality about her in that tape is the lack of rawness. More often than not, if you look up old photos and videos of stars today, you’ll notice something missing. Either their makeup isn’t right, there’s still some weight to be lost or a certain measure of lingering self-doubt. Whatever it is, what industry people call “star quality” isn’t there yet. In Marian’s case, however, she was the complete package: She had the looks, the talent, the moves, and most noticeably, the appeal. Watch as she brings the buxom Thalia’s moves as Marimar back to life and the way she stood her ground while throwing lines with one of the industry’s long-time leading men, her current beau, Dingdong Dantes. There wasn’t a slight instance of inhibition or hesitance; she was ready for stardom.

The woman everyone loves to hate: Marian possesses one of the sweetest faces in the industry, which belies her fieriness when the gossip surrounding her gets ugly.

The very fact that she was hailed as GMA’s newest star in as little as two years in the industry while steadily earning her crown as her studio’s Primetime Queen within the next four years is uncanny. But as quickly her ascendance to fame occurred, so did the onset of haterade. From the beginning of her career, there almost hasn’t been a time when Marian wasn’t entangled in some sort of mess. She could give Gretchen Barretto a run for her money. A number of these controversies include being the called third party in Karylle and Dingdong’s dissolved relationship (but is there an actress who hasn’t been labelled as the “third party”? Anyway, she was absolved by Karylle herself.). Another issue involved having a video uploaded on Youtube of her losing her cool and telling off a male onlooker who was rude to her on the set of Dyesebel (hey, she’s a fiery Caviteña).

Perhaps the worst and most absurd instance was when she supposedly locked actress Bela Padilla in a bathroom because Bela’s romantic scenes with Dingdong in the TV show Endless Love made her jealous (the issue was resolved behind closed doors, but it’s hard to believe that any sane person would do that). The most recent issue is a reported feud between her and co-Temptation Island lead, Heart Evangelista, which supposedly involved Heart’s mom telling Marian to stay away from her daughter. The report is surprising considering the talk that it was Marian who convinced Heart to join the cast in the first place, but with Heart all the way in Brazil now, resolutions might have to wait.

In all the controversy hounding her throughout her entire career, the running theme, curiously, is that Marian is always portrayed as the aggressor. As such, she’s a potential PR nightmare and this type of thing never usually works out for any burgeoning or reigning artista. Yet somehow, her popularity has never diminished and she’s still never given the dreaded boxed-in kontrabida roles. For the most part, she’s untouchable and that’s one niggling fact that must annoy her aggravators most. If anything, these persistent issues keep Marian interesting and most of all, relatable. After all, it gets tiring to see these actresses pretend that they’re perfect human beings who never lose their tempers, never make mistakes (admittedly, that “Isa po akong Psychology” crack never gets old), never feel pangs of jealousy when your boyfriend has to kiss another actress for a scene. Come on.

We may never know the true character of Marian Rivera or if the invectives hurled at her bear any semblance of truth. All we can say is that she stands alone when it comes to her candidness, refreshing honesty, and willingness to speak her mind, even if it means getting misinterpreted and misunderstood. From the start of her extraordinary career, Marian knew exactly what she was getting herself into when she chose this path six years ago and she’s not about to regret her decision over little more than mud slinging. She took control of an industry known for its volatility and for all her faults, that’s a pretty mean feat — one that deserves some respect. And that’s just something that her haters have to deal with.
