Ford to close Philippine assembly plant

MANILA: US auto giant Ford said on Wednesday it is to close its vehicle assembly plant in the Philippines by the end of the year, with the loss of 360 jobs, as part of an ongoing restructuring across Asia.

The decision will leave the country without a motor vehicle exporter, Ford Group Philippines president Randy Krieger said in a statement.

"This is a very difficult decision. The company studied every possible scenario and opportunity, but we could not make a strong enough business case for future manufacturing," he added.

The company said it had exported more than 80,000 vehicles worth $1 billion over to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia since 2002.

Ford invested $270 million in the 36,000 vehicles per year factory in Santa Rosa, south of Manila that opened in 1999.

Ford is concentrating its manufacturing activities at its Rayong, Thailand facility. mas makakatipid sila by moving everything to Thailand bukod sa mas foreign direct investment-friendly ang Thailand kumpara sa Pilipinas.

Expect more huge international corporations to pack up if the DoF and the President continue to ignore their clamor for fairer and more transparent tax system.

A classic case of noynoying is happening right now and could cost this government embarrassment in international business community and huge revenue loss.

the oligarchs will be very happy that foreign companies are slowly but surely leaving the Philippines for countries like Thailand and Vietnam. gusto nila yan para wala silang kaagaw sa pag-control ng yaman ng Pilipinas.

umm.. do we even have a local car company directly competing with ford? must someone always connect this oligarch conspiracy to every bad thing that ever happens in the country...

Unhappy President Aquino was directly at fault.

Sometimes this guy (the President) is the one that makes it hard for citizens to support him.

The $400-per-unit fiscal incentive the Philippine government gave to the company expired two years ago. The company asked the Aquino administration to reinstate this fiscal perk to keep local production of the Escape to no avail.
Like President Cory, he chose not to implement a GMA project.

Ford was one of the local car assemblers that had lobbied for a new motor vehicle development program, aimed at sustaining domestic manufacturing. The Aquino administration however had opted not to pursue the program.
Update Today (I forgot to include this link earlier...):
Ford to shut down Philippine assembly operations

Ford to Build Plant in China to Bolster Global Sales
    By KEITH BRADSHER
    Published: April 19, 2012

BEIJING, CHINA — Ford Motor has chosen China for its largest factory expansion program in a half century, announcing on Thursday that it would build a $760 million assembly plant in Hangzhou, two weeks after announcing another $600 million plan to expand an assembly plant in Chongqing and less than six weeks after completing a third assembly plant in Chongqing.

Ford is late to China’s party, and its new factories will open in a slowing, increasingly competitive Chinese market. Rapid factory construction in China is a throwback to the company’s last big factory building campaign in the 1950s, when models like the Thunderbird captured the hearts and wallets of young Americans and when Ford was racing to increase capacity in postwar Europe, Australia and South Africa.

Auto sales in China rose just 2.5 percent last year, after a decade of double-digit annual growth. Sales were down 1.3 percent in the first quarter of this year from a year earlier, the first quarter to show a decline in seven years, according to official figures.

Ford’s ambitious investment plans in China, where it holds a little over 2 percent of the market, represent “a sharp contrast to the old Ford in China, which was tentative, thin on products and short on money for investment,” said Michael Dunne, a longtime auto consultant in China.

Ford’s planned expansion comes as a long list of Japanese, European and American automakers are also building more factories and face competition from fast-growing, low-cost Chinese manufacturers.

And some still think that Pinas ang kakampihan ng ibang bansa sa pambu-bully ng China. Takot lang nila malugi investments nila dun.

Magkita-kita na lang kayo sa kangkungan ni Pnoy.
