Say if Kobe's gone from the Lakers, how can you still be a fan? Now I can understand big market teams like LA or Boston. Kaya naman nilang kumuha ng ibang magaling. But teams like Portland for example. How did you become a fan of that if you're not FROM Portland? Mystery din sa akin to. No hate, legit question.

Personally I follow a player's career. Kahit saan sya mapunta, dun ako. When I was a kid I was a die-hard MJ fan. Still am. Also when Kobe was drafted. Kasi larong MJ sya. It all changed when Lakers faced the Sixers sa '01 Finals. I instantly became an AI fanatic. I rooted for him w/ a passion.

Now I'm a Lebron fan. At first nung na-draft sya, I thought he was overrated & over-hyped. I was still an Iverson die-hard fan, kaya hindi ko sya masyadong pinapanood. He caught my attention nung nka-Finals sya against the Spurs. I thought, "uy, parang si AI to a, dinala yung team na walang kwenta"! I saw his talent. Sure the last several years medyo questionable yung character/mentality nya, but now all of that has been laid to rest. Feelsgoodman.jpg

Sana lang si AI naka-isa din..
You answered your own question. Teams change players. We just chose not to root for players, but for the team/franchise as a whole. For most of us maybe it started by cheering for players and got attached to the team/franchise/city in the process. In my case, I was a huge Clyde Drexler fan; hence my being a fan of Portland. When he transferred to Houston, I rooted for him and the Rockets.. but I still rooted for the Blazers as well.

Sure we still get attached to players (eg. Brandon Roy), pero para sakin naman baligtad - I don't understand how people can switch teams just because their favorite player switched teams also. To me it's so... trivial.

In the context of local basketball, those who rooted for Jawo didn't just drop their affinity for Ginebra when he retired (at least most of them). Same for those who rooted for Patrimonio and Purefoods. They're still the two most popular PBA teams today because of fans who became loyal to them at the heydey of their star players.

MJ fanatic noong nagsimula sila ng 2nd three-peat nila sa CHI...then I still follow him kahit naglaro siya sa Wizards and not the same MJ during his Bulls days.

then became LBJ fan....I believe in his talents especially his all-around plays. doon talaga ako humanga sa kanya. noong nasa Cavs pa siya, I root for the cavs. noong lumipat naman sa Heat, I root for the Heat.

if LBJ and his team are eliminated, I still watch the NBA until the last game of the season. I just love talaga the game.

Grew up watching Magic Johnson, Cooper, Byron Scott & Jabbar. Daming nagsasabi ang Lakers daw ngayon ang Ginebra tulad nung Jaworski Days. I don't like Ginebra and I also don't like Jordan and the Bulls. I HATE media hyped players. "What a pass by Jordan" I mean come on. Magaling na si Jordan pero I'm always against the media and superstar treatment dahil I grew up watching how Magic Johnson made basketball a team game. I know it's a complete opposite of what Kobe is doing but you can see his hard work, determination na maski bali bali na buto nya productive at dedicated pa din sya. I will be a Laker fan even ipalit ang buong team ng Bobcats sa kanila.

And yes don't get me started on Lebron powder toss and the decision. Plus the crappiest dunk of Blake over Kia. Puhleese

im a fan of players first then team second. Every draft nga may "favorite" akong rookie(this year barnes and PJ3).

I watch basketball because of my favorite players, not because of my loyalty to a team or franchise.

I've only been loyal to a single basketball franchise. And that team never played in the NBA. My loyalty belongs to Crispa.

But since were in the NBA forum, I've always been cheering for the Eastern Conference teams.

    Sixers- DR J (and Barkley)
    Celtics- Bird
    Bulls- Jordan

But Michael Jordan became my obsession. From his NCAA days in NC, to USA basketball in '84... until he got drafted by the Bulls. I saw how critics ganged up against him saying that he couldn't shoot jumpers, he didn't play defense, and a scoring champ won't win a championship. I hated how the Pistons physical abused him. And it was amazing how he overcame all these challenges and became the greatest player of all time.

Jordan was the ultimate basketball player, nobody can play basketball like he did. He was electrifying. He was graceful and fierce at the same time. He always played with intensity, and yet, you can really see that he was really having a great time playing basketball. He loved playing basketball.

Jordan brought basketball to new heights.
    He changed the basketball landscape.
Basketball culture evolved because of Jordan.
Before him, everybody wore Adidas and Converse.
I became a Nike fanboy because of the Air Jordan.
LOL. Without him, everybody would still be looking like John Stockton and his skimpy basketball shorts.

I couldn't find any other basketball player who could be more athletic, more graceful and more competitive than His Airness. Like Mars Blackmon said... "Nobody in the world can cover my main man".

That was why I started liking players who played differently from Jordan's style. Chris Mullin and Jason Kidd were nowhere near Jordan's level, but I started liking their brand of basketball.

Chris Mullin was the unassuming, non-athletic player from Golden State. But he played smart basketball and could shoot the lights out. He was the poor man's Larry Bird. Too bad, he belonged in Jordan's era.

And there was this young point guard sensation who can handle the ball and dish out sensational assists and Jason Kidd didn't care if he didn't score any point at all.

    Jordan had already won championships.
    He retired.
... came back and won 3 more championships.
    And retired again.

I had to find someone new to cheer for.

    I like smart players.

And Jason Kidd was the player first player that made me become a fan of a Western Conference team. I began following his career when he was traded to Phoenix. I watched how he was able to bring the lowly NJ Nets to the finals. And I'm glad that he finally won a championship in Dallas.

Now, Jason Kidd's game is on a decline.

I better find a new player to cheer for...

Nung nawala yung Bulls and nawala din si Penny dahil sa injury naging T-Mac fan and Kings fan ako (para kasi silang Ginebra ).. then naging Manu Ginobili fan ako.. 2003 LeBron hater ako then 2005 turned into a LeBron die hard.. ngayon nagiging big fan na din ako ni Rondo (not Boston).. pero gusto ko din sila Rose and Melo kasi they are playing for their hometown..

Sa NBA - player fan ako unlike in the PBA - PF / BMEG fan ako since Kap days.

Nung bata ako I'm a Pippen fan more than Bulls fan. Then nung HS, I'm a KG fan more than Minny then nung nalipat si KG sa Boston sinundan ko din sya. Nadagdag sa mga idol ko si Rondo so most likely I would still root for Boston even if KG retires or transfer to another team.

I would admit bandwagon fan ako ng Nash-Dirk Mavs era.

Nba pex bandwagon fans don't really care what they are or what they are being called. They just troll to try to get some reaction from anyone who gives them attention. Papampam lang. That's what they are - ksp. They are not really rooting for any team but looks for posts or targets people that they can troll about.

  17. #57
Dude, advise ko sayo on people who laugh at your posts and just feel it doesn't have any bite anymore since Lebron already won.

    Suck it up.

    Ano ba definition ng bandwagon?

Sa Urban dictionary.. "In sports, someone who shamelessly cheers for a particular team not because he likes them or follows them faithfully, but only because that particular team is the "popular" choice or has been or is the top team in their specific sport recently. When that team which bandwagoners follow falls from grace, they gleefully jump on the next teams bandwagon and cheer for that team." - http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...rm=bandwagoner

Sa NBA, I followed the Kings of the Webber-Stoja-Bibby era. Was heartbroken with the Horry 3 and their eventual loss in the WCF. Seldom Kings' wins bring a smile to my face though. Then I became a fan of the Suns' offense with Nash-Marion-Amare. Then when OKC started doing well with unexpected wins against top teams during the 2010 season, I started liking them. I started using them in 2K11 and 2K12 in every offline and online game I play and admire how the team was built, check NBA.com everyday for boxscore and highlights of their games and was very sad when they lost to Dallas last WCF and to the Heat this Finals. And yes, I joined the bandwagon first until masasabi kong naging naging fan at naging attach ako sa team.

  19. #59
The thing about bandwagon for me and why I don't think it is such a dreaded phenomenon is the idea we are basketball fans first. It is a sport that we love. Agree? If yes, then why do you have to contain yourself in cheering for another team or player? Is it really bad to appreciate Phoenix's SSOL or Boston's tenacity and hard play at the same time? Can't we just marvel at the next great rivalry (Kobe/Lebron, Durant/Lebron, Deron/Rose/Rondo/Paul)?

Admit it. You probably didn't cheer for Manny Pacquiao when he was fighting his first 10 bouts. When you heard this little Filipino winning you wanted to cheer for him and watch almost all his fights. My point is, being a fan has to start somewhere. So there is no reason why you can't cheer for a winning team/individual AND look bad because of it.
