Angelica Panganiban plays her first dual role in ‘Apoy Ng Dagat’

After the success of their Star Cinema film Every Breathe U Take, Angelica Panganiban said she was excited to find out that that her next teleserye would have her working again with Piolo Pascual. “Parang hindi ako makapaniwala na sa isang malaking project, part ako ng isang sobrang laking project tapos grabe yung mga makakatrabaho ko, mga makakasama ko na hindi lang mga artista kundi yung buong proyekto. Ang sarap, ang saya, sobrang heaven yung pakiramdam,” she shared. The new series titled Apoy Ng Dagat which will also star Diether Ocampo and Angel Aquino, is set to start taping by next week.

In this new drama, Angel will be bringing to life two characters just like what Coco Martin did in Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin. This dual role is admittedly an added acting challenge for Angel. “Siyempre sobra yung challenging dahil dalawang characters gagampanan ko so dun pa lang kaabang-abang na,” she shared during the Apoy Ng Dagat storycon held last July 5 at the ABS-CBN compound.

Angel said that she is lucky to have a leading man who is very easy to work with. “Si Papa P kasi sobra akong kumportableng makasama siya, maka-trabaho, parang hindi ako nahihiya sa kanya, sobrang kapal na nga ng mukha ko pag kasama ko siya. Well may ganun siyang personality eh, sa kahit na sinong nakakatrabaho niya. Napapansin ko lang naman parang sobra kang magiging relaxed, hindi ka kakabahan,” she explained.

Since Apoy Ng Dagat has a water element, Angel and Piolo are also going to undergo swim training next week in preparation for their roles. Aside from having heavy drama, Angel said their characters will showcase their more daring side as well. “Well basically kasi nasa dagat kami so parang dun pa lang, parang given na siya (laughs). Talagang mamalat-malat ito (laughs),” she said.

When prodded by the press if there is a chance that Piolo might develop feelings for her or vice versa, Angel brushes off the comment with a joke. “Basta ang alam ko kasi approve sa akin si Iñigo (Piolo’s son). Saan na ba siya? (laughs). Si Papa P busy kasi siya, wala siyang time sa akin. Kasi kakatapos pa lang ng Dahil Sa Pag-ibig tapos heto na siya, tapos hindi siya magbabakasyon. Ayaw na ayaw niya (laughs),” she said.

Piolo Pascual is content with the 16-week run of Dahil Sa Pag-ibig, his last teleserye, which he topbilled with Jericho Rosales, Cristine Reyes, and Maricar Reyes. The primetime soap which started airing on March 12 and ended on June 29 this year did not see an extended airing time.

“It was really meant for it,” Piolo initially explained in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last night, July 7, at an ASAP rehearsal at Studio 10, ELJ Building, ABS-CBN network, Quezon City.

“Honestly, I wanted it to end right away because we didn't want it to drag. The concept of the story is really going to run for a certain period of time.

Piolo thought it was best that the soap “ended on a high note.”

“Masaya ako kasi everything was resolved and at the same time, lahat nabigyan ng highlight. So, happy ako. Happy ako sa outcome.”

APOY SA DAGAT. Piolo is busy yet again with an upcoming teleserye which he began working on early this month. A romantic-drama, Apoy sa Dagat stars the 35-year-old heartthrob with Angelica Panganiban, Diether Ocampo, and Angel Aquino. It will be directed by Eric Reyes who was also behind the primetime soaps Lobo and Maging Sino Ka Man.

“I’m already training for Apoy sa Dagat with Angelica, Diether, and Angel,” said Piolo.

“So, it’s going to start taping next week. We’re going to be airing within the year, that’s why they’re rushing everything. Yesterday we had a story conference… On Monday, we’re going to start training naman.”

Apoy sa Dagat is another love story, but according to Piolo, the soap has a “water” element to it.

“Just the same, ABS[-CBN] always comes up with fresh ideas…

“It involves the sea, kaya nga Apoy sa Dagat.”

ANGELICA PANGANIBAN. It was only in May this year that Piolo and Angelica’s romantic-comedy, Every Breath You Take, hit the cinemas nationwide. As their on-screen romantic pairing leaps to Apoy sa Dagat, Piolo, by now has grown comfortable around the sexy actress.

“We’re so excited,” he said.

“We worked for one year for Every Breath You Take and this time around, after Mangarap Ka, I think, para kaming nag-full circle kasi she was 17 [years old] then when we did Mangarap Ka.”

Piolo and Angelica acted alongside each other in the 2004 soap, Mangarap Ka.

“We’re doing another show after almost ten years,” he said.

“We’re both excited because so many things have changed. We both matured as artists, as performers. I know marami pa kaming puwede ibigay.”

Asked what's the best thing about working with Angelica, Piolo quipped, “She’s a natural. She brings out the funny side of me.

“Yesterday, when we were doing the look test, para kaming mga loko-loko, kami lang yung tawa nang tawa.

“Sabi niya, nakakatawa pala ako. Sabi ko, I’m only like that when I’m with you.

“Feeling ko ‘pag siya yung kasama ko, lumalabas yung pagka-kulit ko.
