    Weird Company Culture

I've been in this company for a few months and I noticed one thing about my co-workers. We are paid every 2 weeks (bi-monthly) and we don't have time card or something like that. As long as you come to work before 8am, flexible 1 hour lunch(if you want to take lunch at 1:35, then you can back to work at 2:35). We are expected to work 8 hours a day (8am to 5pm).

I'm in the IT department, and we are really close with graphics and marketing department. So here's the weird part,

my co-workers (including graphics guy and marketing guys) comes to work so early, around 7:30am, that's understandable. but they never leave work at 5pm. not 5:10, not 5:15, they leave work around or before 6pm! Isn't that weird? They work overtime all the time. I mean, I can understand it if its not everyday or if there's a deadline, but no, it's just a regular office day. They don't even take the full hour lunch. They just eat and go back to work!

I'm wondering "WHY?". I mean, I'm not lazy and I like working, but I'm pretty sure 8 hours in a day is enough, and I'm really good at what I do so I don't need overtime to finish a task. I want to take my full hour lunch to take a break and I think you will be more productive if you have enough of rest (some study says overtime makes worker less productive cause they dont get enough rest for the next day). I have a life and I have things to do after work. I just don't understand.

    Anyone experienced similar situation?

You can also share here different weird company culture.

^is this your first job TS? You're in the IT Department, you ain't seen nothin yet lol

and I'm really good at what I do so I don't need overtime to finish a task.
    I'm sure you are

On a serious note, in IT Industry, OTs are not uncommon. Rendering extra work hours because you have to either have to finish something or you just don't want to break your train of thoughts is never weird.

Yep To the TS: I don't find it weird. I also find it common in our work. If you can finish your work within 8 hours, then good. But sometimes, 8hours isn't enough to finish your work. There is nothing wrong with your practice and so does your co-workers. For me, it's just a matter of what way works for you.

or maybe they are waiting for a friend/family who works 9am-6pm...

6PM is too early for an IT person. I hope you won't experience a 9AM-11PM average hours of work. Nope, no OT there.

Nope. It's not my first job. I mean, I'll understand it if its like a busy day or you are trying to meet a deadline, but my point is my coworkers are always like that, every single day.

The answer for that is no, they are not waiting for a friend or family.

    9am - 11pm? Srsly?

And thanks for the reply, FYI, for an IT person like me, if I really need to work overtime, I can just go home and continue it at my place. Maybe they just like working after 5pm cause they got nothing to do after work.

Don't mind them, just mind your time.

I also believe that 8 hours of work in a day is more than enough. If they don't want life outside work then it's their choice.

In our team we never render OT unless it's life and death situation for the company.

    There's always a tomorrow, kid.

Yeah, I want to ignore them but what if I leave exactly at 5pm everyday, would they think that I'm lazy? How about the impression of my supervisor?

i usually come in early (before 7am) but leave the office at exactly 5pm while most of my team mates stay late until way past 7pm. initially they got bothered with my time but my boss aren't so eventually they stopped minding.

I work as an IT too, General monitoring.
    I work from 9am to 9pm, no OT's

but it happens just 2-3 times a week.
    my regular hrs is 9am - 6pm

Tell him/her that your teammates don't know how to manage their time well.

Sabihin mo, I go home early because I'm done with my work today.

At the end of the day, if they rate you based on the time you rendered and not because of your output.

Then umalis ka dyan, wlang kwentang company yan

6pm damn!! that is too early for an IT employee..
you must feel lucky not weird..

i wish i could be out of the office by 6pm..
i worked 9 hours a day, that is 1 hour mandatory OT..

  15. #15
i think you are the one who is weird.. lol

  16. #16
not related pero I used to work sa bank and we work from 830am to 8pm ( yes Thank you OT siya) dumarating ako sa office 730 am kasi umaalis ako sa house ng 530 am para iwas trapik then darating ako sa house ng 10pm then tulog ng 1030pm at gising ng 430am at alis ng 530 am (ganun ang buhay ko everyday) so based on your question, I think its not weird

disadvantage lang sa culture ng banking/finance: hindi updated sa mga showbiz happenings/news/media/trends etc. hihi kaya after two years umalis na ako sa bank at mas magaan ang workload ko ngayon sa hotel
