MANILA, Philippines – A plan to construct a condominium near Luneta Park in Manila is being opposed by a renowned cultural activist.

Carlos Celdran, who is also a professional Manila tour guide, has started an online petition opposing the construction of the Torre de Manila of DMCI Holdings Incorporated.

Celdran said the building will be built in a lot sandwiched behind the former jai-alai lot 40 meters away from Taft Avenue.

He alleged that the building will ruin the view of the Rizal monument.

“Not only is this building offensive to our national hero, our national identity and all things good and true - but it’s also a ridiculous investment,” Celdran wrote in his petition. http://www.change.org/petitions/no-t...manila-project

Celdran, saying he wants to solve the issue with “some sensitivity and creativity,” and that he plans to discuss the project with city officials of Manila.

“I implore fellow Filipinos to speak up about this and have DMCI rethink this project. Not only are we on to them but we refuse to have anything that they build ruin the sanctity of the Rizal sight line forever,” wrote Celdran.

In a text message to ANC, DMCI marketing manager Jan Venturanza said they will release a statement if deemed necessary.

In 2010, Celdran was apprehended for interrupting a homily at the Manila Cathedral. He criticized the church for opposing the Reproductive Health Bill. -- Report from ANC

Everytime you'll take a picture of Luneta, there will be that ugly fat guy in the background who won't go away.

If you take a picture of Rizal Park from the left side there are 3 buildings looming over it.

    So what's the issue?

    Much ado over nothing.

"DMCI's Torre de Manila is "gonna have the honor of being the 1st skyscraper to ruin the Rizal Monument's clear skies view from the front."

“Not only is this building offensive to our national hero..."

Wow. Na-offend si Dr. Rizal from the afterlife.

    "our national identity..."

Multi-story buildings are offensive to the national identity.

“...and all things good and true"

It's going to offend Imelda Marcos?

    " - but it’s also a ridiculous investment,”

Now that is highly debateable. Your address will be right behind the Rizal monument is always a good investment. Remember...location, location, location.

"It is outside but it impedes on the sanctity of the heritage landscape. You think any mayor or developer in Paris would allow an ugly private condo to be built right behind the Eiffel Tower?? I'm sorry. But they should find a new lot. This looks like an interesting legal battle for the new NHI law," Celdran wrote in his Facebook page.

"That law protects heritage landscapes like the sunset of Roxas Boulevard and the sightlines of Luneta Park. Seriously, Consunji Family, find another lot," Celdran said.

So much fuss and over reaction. Progress should be a top priority rather than an opinion of a person who thinks only of his beloved statue of Rizal. Nobody really cares who the heck is Rizal nowadays. As far as I am concerned, he is history.

    Build the damn structure.

    Wow.

sanctity of the Rizal sight line

Banahaw.

It's going to be lonely, uphill battle for him.

Mukhang malayo naman yung location nung building. From his description, it might not even be facing Taft Ave. (baka San Marcelino?). Kailangan ng City of Manila ng mga investments na ganyan, even just to add to its urban renewal.

Manila needs to review its zoning. If the view of the Rizal monument is to be preserved, construction in nearby areas should be prohibited or regulated such that a maximum height is followed. It's similar to the requirement in Intramuros to have designs of buildings blending with the area's theme.

again pass the national land use act which is still languishing in the senate.

It is like putting a towering building at the back of Washington Monument.

No sense of respect naman yun mga nasa goberyno pagdating sa mga heritage site natin. Just look what happen sa ancestral house ng Ina ni Rizal sa Binan, Laguna. Ginawang part ng palengke.

    http://www.ivanhenares.com/2010/06/l...-in-binan.html

    http://www.thepoc.net/thepoc-feature...d-present.html

Siguradong no pansin lang yan.

Who's gonna build a building higher than the Eiffel Tower and the Washington Monument? Also, the building and zoning laws in Paris and Washington DC may be different from that of Manila.

Intramuros can regulate the height and architecture of the buildings within its walls not around it.

    you're not concern
sa hong kong most city parks are lined by tall buildings at the background and it looks rather bongga sa gabi with the lights draped over buildings.

and aren't parks in other countries lined by shopping malls even? like yung union square in san francisco.

Putting up residential buildings will make the park have more visitors where it will be nice to spend weekends.
