read moreWhat about Edward "Poch" Juinio, who, after a stint as a UP Fighting Maroon and around 2 conferences in the PBL, joined the draft and was taken by Alaska? He became a crucial piece in Alaska's nucleus that won the grandslam in 1996. Many felt that Juinio didn't deserve to get drafted, especially because of his so-so performance in both the UAAP and the PBL, but he was able to step up and play a role in Alaska's system.
Conversely, many wouldn't know this but Ato Agustin was more than ripe enough to actually have joined the PBA Draft as early as 1987 alongside Allan Caidic and Al Solis. But he waited, continued to develop his game in the PABL with RFM-Swift, until he decided to join the Draft in 1989. He was chosen in the second round of a very deep draft class. It would have been safe to assume that Agustin would have been picked in the Top 3 in either the 1987 or 1988 Drafts. As such, Agustin had to sit it out in the bench of SMB for a couple of seasons playing back-up to Samboy Lim. He finally found the opportunity he was looking for after another Lim injury and went on to capture Coach Norman Black's complete trust and confidence. Agustin went on to win the MVP plum in 1992.
New PBA draft rule closes door on new Fil-Ams

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan, Philippines – The 2011 PBA Rookie Draft is essentially close to Fil-foreign players, except Smart Gilas Pilipinas mainstays Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter.
This is the major ramification of a recent PBA board resolution opening the coming draft only to homegrown players now playing in the PBA D-League and to players who have served the national men’s team.
Under the league’s new draft policy, Fil-foreign players must have played at least two conferences in the D-League to be eligible for the annual draft.
“What the board wants is for the Fil-foreign players to know the Filipino culture first before being allowed to play in the PBA,” said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.
“And as they take residency in the D-League, Filipino basketball fans get to know them before they play in the pros,” Marcial added.
Among Fil-foreign players who’ve started residency in D-League are Pharex’s Jason Deustchman and N-LEX’s Cody Tesoro, Chris Ellis, Karl Dehasa and Cliff Hodge. Deustchman is a 6-foot-7 multi-position player.
The earliest these players can play in the PBA is 2012.
Same with players like Cebuano hotshot Junmar Fajardo.
The 6-foot-9 behemoth, who is reportedly planning to join the coming draft, must look for a team to play for in the current D-League tourney if he wishes to be accepted in the 2011 draft pool.
Liga Pilipinas players must also play in the D-League to gain eligibility in the draft.
Among top prospects for the coming draft are members of Smart Gilas Pilipinas and D-League aces Paul Lee, Carl Abueva and Eric Salamat.
Still up for discussion are Barako Bull’s draft rights.
Barako Bull’s 2011 first round pick has been traded to Talk n Text. The question is whether Barako Bull would automatically be considered the last placer in the current season and thus given a crack at the top pick via a lottery.
At the moment, Powerade, Air21 and Meralco are the other teams with a shot at the top pick.
The draft order will be finalized at season’s end. The draft is set Aug. 28.
Rabeh Al-Hussaini, the second pick behind teammate Nonoy Baclao in the last draft, is the statistical leader in the Rookie-of-the-Year race.
Like what I have said, This earlier ruling was deferred. If Petron gets that #1 pick. Junmar Fajardo will apply for the Draft. If Alaska Snatches it, then there is a possibility that he won't

@BongParedes SMC does not agree in the d-league system as it is conceptualized now. It's just another coml league. Thats y SMC has no team.

@tagamalangkaw The rule on pure pinoys was deferred.
My Guess is that it will be implemented on the 2013 draft as it is only deferred but for the upcoming 2012 Draft, it is a go for all pure pinoys which includes JunMar Fajardo.

I have been searching the net an article stating that the rule was deferred, but it seems that only Mr Eala tweets are the only one confirming this. Again, I am not questioning the validity of his claim, I just want factual evidence to support his claim.
Going back to the web, I can’t seem to find an article stating that Petron got the 2012 first round pick of Air 21 (formerly Shopinas). What I found was an article that said Petron Got the 2012 pick of Barako Bull (Formerly Air 21) see below :
Petron (former Derby Ace/Purefoods) gives up its 2010 1st round Draft Pick in the upcoming PBA Rookie Draft to Air 21 Express in exchange for the 2012 1st Round Draft Pick. This means Petron will have no Draft Pick in the 2010 PBA Rookie Draft (unless they trade some players for a draft pick) since Air 21 also has their 1st round and 2nd round draft picks from the Marc Pingris trade.
Shopinas only joined the league this Season , The Air 21 the article was referring is the then Air 21 which is now called Barako Bull.
actually i had the same gripe with beau belga. i thought he had the body but didn't have the court sense to stick pero buti na lang mali ako. he is still young at 26 (lutz' age noong pumasok siya sa pba) and while he needs to have a consistent offensive moveset, nabibigay naman niya ang trip ni yeng guiao.
If Alaska can pick up Fajardo (although I doubt especially since Fajardo has stated that he will only play for a SMC team), then they should go for the 6'10 center. My belief has always been - if you own the top pick of the draft, you go for the best available talent. You worry about what to do with him after you have him in your stable. There are several options that can be done - trading him for a team that needs his services and getting a veteran star or stars in return or future draft picks. Or make him a marketable piece of commodity if, assuming rumors are true that the franchise is disbanding, to increase the value of the team when they sell this to interested buyers, etc.
But again, this is under the assumption that they can get the top pick of the draft. Add to this, that Fajardo doesn't back out from Draft Day. If Fajardo remains in the Draft, then Alaska should collar his services - regardless of his preference to play. Same scenario done by Shell in the 1998 Draft when they secured Danny Ildefonso (the best talent available then) as the top pick only to trade him to SMB for the 2nd pick of the draft (Noy Castillo) plus cash considerations since they had Benjie Paras and Chris Jackson in the team anyway. Ultimately, Alaska would stand to benefit more if they draft based on talent and not on need since they can still end up with their player of need plus another player or draft pick.
If Alaska will land as top pick and if there's no Hodge and Ellis, then they should and must get the best available talent in Fajardo. Even if Junmar doesn't want to play with them, at least they have more options and opportunity to land top caliber player/s in trading Fajardo.
That will be interesting since the deadline of the Draft Application is said to be on August 3. I believe we would know the daft order earlier than that. Should Alaska get the number 1 pick, SMC has enough time to negotiate with the Uytengsu. If there will be no prior agreement, expect Fajardo not to apply.
My gut feel is if JunMar Fajardo Applies, SMC is confident they will get his services no matter what.
No doubt about that. A JunMar Fajardo sighting on Draft day would only mean that SMC is secured in acquiring the big man's services, regardless of who gets to draft him first. A non-Fajardo appearance would mean SMC wasn't able to wangle a deal with the Alaska franchise, assuming the latter copped first pick rights.
Which is why Alaska would need to utilize their cards correctly if they get the first pick overall. Not that they need an advice since they're extremely shrewd when it comes to negotiations but they would need to remind themselves that a top pick in the draft is extremely valuable for another team - in this case, the SMC Group. If they play their cards right, negotiate correctly without demanding too much, they might be able to get something more than just Fajardo.
Curiously, these are the two protagonists in the Samigue Eman fiasco of 2010. Eman, then a benchwarmer at San Miguel, was placed in the unprotected reserved list, confident that no team would be interested. Alaska found out, got Eman from the reserve list, and offered a contract which the 6'10 center accepted. SMC officials were incensed with this but couldn't complain to the PBA officials as the Alaska move was completely legitimate and above board. They took it against Eman who didn't have the debt of gratitude of staying with the company that coddled, took care, treated him medically, etc during the past 3 years. Interestingly, Alaska countered by saying that Eman rotted in the SMB bench for two years playing only a total of 20 games. So you know acrimony and animosity aren't exactly lost between these two.
What makes it interesting though is if Fajardo will go the way of Sam Eman's career. Or will he be the next motivated Marlou Aquino? Only time will tell...
if Hodge would come in maybe Alaska will get him if they have 1st pick
