haha. no it has GREAT sentimental value to me. The other day i washed it and I pulled it out, I saw the little sticker that had my name (which was wrongly spelled) and a bar code on the bottom, which they put on in Ft. Knox many many years ago. Lol.

It's like you know how those little kids have their blanket? I wear my gray BCT sweater (once basic is over we never ever use it in the army) all the time, lifting weights, running, crossfit anything. I was 155 when I first got it, so around a medium, but the army always give you 2 sizes so now it's like so big, but I still love it. lol. It's the one uniform the army gave me that I used the most...we've changed uniforms twice since I joined, we're going to change again next couple of years, but I'm sure I'll still be running my sweats till it's torn and old.

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or gazelle - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running."

Run you silly ********! Run, get your fat as ses and run. Get you disgusting fat asses and run, run! Get up, get up get up! Public service announcement from your motivational hero.

This is such a nice thread. I enjoyed reading all the entries and watched all the youtube links which are indeed very inspirational. I'm a huge fun of the Hoyts. There is a comprehensive entry about them in the wiki entry of Boston Marathon. I'm so envious with that last bit of info but at the same time it's my biggest motivation. And yes, like everyone in here, I'm a runner. Never considered myself athletic as I'm just pedestrian in all the sports I played but to my surprise I love running, so much. Started with 5k and 10k races and now in 2 weeks time I will be running my first marathon. I am following Hal Higdon marathon training program and so far my training had improved my timings in my last 5 shorter distance races (5k to HM). Still working on my consistency esp as the program I'm following requires one to run/train 6 days a week which is tough. But I need to try harder if I want results. My dream is to run to run 3 of the 4 major marathons (NY, Chicago and London; Boston is impossible for me realistically). I haven't finished my first marathon yet but now I'm already thinking of bigger things. haha. But you guys know it that when you train properly, your are gaining confidence too.

Just keep it comings guys. 4AM now and I still have some work left to do. No proper muscle recovery today.

Thanks for the link to "THE SPIRIT OF THE MARATHON"! I didnt get a chance to see all of it but will do so later.

I did see one of my all time track idols Emil Zatopek.

Good thing FA_SOLDIER started this topic on running. I mean, it seems to me that some people forget that running is one of the alltime great sports movements.

No offense meant, but its like i hear mostly weight training and variations of it most of the time on quite a few fitness websites with minor regard for endurance training (running in this case).

Its like cardio is relegated to circuit weight training or something similiar. There is for me a classical elegance about running that you wont get from fitness via weight training or something restricted inside a gym environment.

In as much as i was a nationally ranked powerlifter (phil.) in the past, i wholeheartedly must say that i was PRIVILEDGED to have been part of the Track and Field experience (usually considered the centerpiece of the modern olympic games) back in highschool and college (just prior to powerlifting).

^"with little regards" because people work out for looks. it's what really it is. I use to like myself better, because now I'm also influenced a lot by wanting to look good. Before all I wanted to do was: be the baddest mother****er out there. I wanted to be Usain Bolt, I wanted to be able to run forever, I wanted to be able to be the fastest, most agile, kiss my *** attitude guy...but now I'm obsess by how this is shape, etc. I miss my old self sometimes. The young kid that just want to perform, not the guy who wants to look good.

A marathon in two weeks? Wow! You must be excited and nervous at the same time, i would be. Anyway, good luck and I hope you will share your first marathon experience with us. I will probably be crying an ocean once I get to the finish line for the first time. My husband kept teasing me on how i was teary-eyed watching the opening of the NYC marathon just this November. And try to consider running The Avenue of The Giants Marathon (Northern California). Running under those giant redwood trees will surely be phenomenal

Honewst opinion, don't rush as much... at your current level a lot of running will do more harm than good...

    matatagtag joints mo...

what you need is to clean up your diet and be more consistent sa diet mo
As the physically weak man can make himself strong by careful and patient training, so the man of weak thoughts can make them strong by exercising himself in right thinking.

*enjoy it. best thing about running is the sight seeing part. enjoy something you do and the rest is not work at all.

*stretching-- I HATE STRETCHING...one of those things I know is good but I dislike doing. I do heavy stretching via martial arts, but stretching on my own I don't. But it's so good for you, just a minute of stretching your hamstrings will make you run a lot faster.

    * SLEEP---get a good 8 hrs of sleep. you'll not only feel good but run more effectively.

*change your routine--don't run the same thing, vary it. Run long on some days, run fast and short, run sprints, run hills. change it up.

*like blake said eat properly. not only to lose weight, but because depending on the food you eat, you either get a boost or help you run longer. also the percentage of body fat loss, is directly proportional to speed, ie time shaved during races.

    * know your limits---it's better to be short changed today but fight the next day. Be yourself---try things that work for you that you like, don't try to be anotehr person, with his own methods and his own trends. But try other things, be open, but if and if you tried, really tried, to use something and found your own to be better use yours.

    US Military runners

These two guys are featured in Runner's Mag last year, they inspire me on days I feel lazy.

David Goggins-this guy is hardcore, he's an ultramarathon runner veteran Navy SEAL, supposedly he use to weight around 200 plus of muscles and have never ran more than 5 miles...but when he decided to run to benefit military families who lost their fathers fighting overseas, he quickly switched in a short time into an endurance runner. He's run the Badwater Ultramarathon (in Death Valley of all places). Truly a beast.

USMC Major Bill Conner- he trained in Fallujah despite 15 hr work day and no swimming, to compete in the Ironman World Championship...and he did the whole circuit wearing his uniform (yeah in desert combat boots)

Hope they motivate you too. Get up! Run!

running_kat, true, i'm very excited and nervous at the same time. In case you're interested, I bought the book 'Marathon - The Ultimate Training Guide' by Hal Hignon and it's a good read. He covered everything that you should know about running a marathon, from the history of marathon, your very first step, avoiding injuries, mental and physical preparation, achieving the perfect pace, till finishing the race. My 20-milers had been good and I hope I won't screw myself come marathon day. Cut-off time is 7 hours so I think that's doable. I will just enjoy my moment. When is your target date for your first marathon?

Happy Thanksgiving To All! But remember that The best appreciation you can do is to your body. Thank God for my feet, and thank him for my motivation.

Get up Get up, don't get fat! If you're going to binge, run harder! No excuses!

How's everyone? 5 days to go before my first FM. Feeling nervous the past few days. A lot probably because of the pressure I put myself into. I have a target time and was able to hit it on my last LSD, but which wouldn't qualify as slow since I did it on my race pace. I just did 32km (20 miles) so I didn't hit the so called 'wall'. What I'm worried about is if I will still have enough left in the tank on the last 10km and finish the race on my target time. Should I run conservatively, say 10-20 seconds slower than my target pace or run on race pace all the way or until such time I reach the wall and limp/walk the rest of the distance?
