We use our cellphones for light and I stumbled a couple of times. I think I was more scared of being attacked by mountain lions though lol. Good luck on your shoulder.
Don't worry about it - I have zero pain except when I start lifting heavy, and the therapist said it was very mild. I'm just being overly cautious about the risks of re-injury. The good thing is that I can focus on my lower body movements, even if running is an issue with the flooded roads out here. And yes, drinking soy is perfectly fine.

Wow, mountain lions, and in the dark to boot! Yeah, another one of the reasons I never run late, along with my fear of getting lost. This is why we usually brought along my other friend's mountain dog on unfamiliar trails. She (I think) always finds the safest trail anywhere, plus she's really quick!

Ramon....I'm sorry about your injuries. That is my biggest fear. I hope you get well soon. I now seldom wear stilettos for the fear of breaking/injuring my ankles, which s.u.c.k.s because I really like wearing high heels.

Best of luck on your fast twitch activity and you quest for red muscle fiber , may I say, perfection.

Injuries sucks. I love pushing myself to the limit but sometimes I fear the damage to my body. Right now I'm young and I feel indestructible...but it takes only one thing. My knees and joints are what I'm worried about, I don't want rheumatism later. Right now I'm dealing with plantar fasciitis, thought about buying a Dr. Scholls, but I don't know if it will help much.

to krayong, yeah dude it's not safe at all. I usually bring my Camel Bak with me and I bring some meals in my pack, but I forgot my flashlight of all things. What I'm scared of the most is rolling my ankle, cuz it would suck coming down. It's great that you have someone to run with. I do, but most of my runs are alone. The best thing about it is your training, it always click on when you need it. It's like BCT again during night ambush missions lol.

Yes i agree that trail running has its dangers (the criminally minded and uneven terrain).

I`ve only done a trail maybe several times in my life. The most exciting/memorable one was in 1981 (i was just a freshman athlete in college) when me, my dad and a friend took a plane to davao and hiked up to mt. apo. We had a couple of natives from the manobo tribe as our guides. At some points one of the guides would go ahead and run to check out stuff, an informal race then ensued between us...

He i believe just wore sandals, whereas i was wearing heavier hiking shoes. Thank god for my training-conditioning under my mentor CHRIS UY (you probably know chris ramon). I was young and agressive, so i wasnt about to have a mountain native put a city boy like me to shame. We ended up having mini races where we were usually neck to neck. Nice memories...

On one of my old posts i did mention how to at least minimize the possibility of injuries on trail running.

In addition to the usual strengthening of the muscles, especially lower extremities, it is very important not to take for granted the muscles involved in moving the FOOT in ALL its movement planes (do plantar flexion, dorsi flexion, inversion, eversion, pronation, supination , and a combination of all those movements).

Of course lets not take the upper body for granted, especially core muscles, since ones torso (as well as lower body) can take quite a beating from all the abrupt changes in body movements (typical on trail runs, what with all the jumping, leaping, sudden braking, not limited to forward movements, but backwards and sideways movements too, etc..) and the corresponding physical shock on ones body!

Ideally you would combine wgt training and some plyometrics and doing front-rear and lateral movements and a combination of all these movements. F-A SOLDIER i`m sure already naturally trains all these movements via the army`s confidence course.

Of course be aware of where you stand on the ladder of fitness in order to see what form and intensity of exercises you can do to help improve not only your resilience to injury, but also improve your performance.

For instance, Plyometrics has different levels of intensity and difficulty, when in doubt start with low intensity (low impact) plyo. Start with EASY trails first, you get the picture.

So as far as possible future injuries, we just have to all learn as much as we can from other people`s experiences and scientific studies and hope for the best, the decision is YOURS of course. I guess you just have to weigh the pros and cons of it all. At 46 yrs old i still like to do full squats, at 46 yrs old Fred Hatfield did a legal world record 1000+ lbs squat in competition.

FA_SOLDIER is army, i`m former airforce (medic squadron), so i`ve seen the Blue Angel on several airshows at our base. And this is funny (for me anyway), i worked on airshows pushing an icecream cart, we of course were wearing our old school green uniform, but i just thought, it would have been funny if i wore my "whites" instead so i woulda looked more like the icecream man "Quest for red muscle fiber?, perfection?" I gotta say you are a 110% running (jedi) knight, "the force is strong in this one".

    RAMON BARRIOS-
I believe they have or will have masters level track competitions, i`l check with one of the BANZON runners. Sprint events are EXCITING!!!

haha, i'm a medic in the army. i'm planning to do OCS, my buddies from old and now persuaded me "are you stupid? you have two degrees and you work here as that, you could be making more, don't waste your time here" lol. I'm hoping for Ranger School, and maybe CROSS MY FINGERS SF someday.

i envy you. hiking Apo ? that's gotta be memorable. There's so many places I want to go to the Philippines, maybe run or just hike,...it's sad I feel like a stranger to my own homeland.

F-A Soldier, i like running in the Sagada, Mt Province. Good and reasonable food and accomodations, friendly folk and fantastic scenery. You could also run in the Lake Caliraya area, 2 hours south of manila in the Sierra Madres. Clean air, no traffic and decent resorts.

Salamat pare. You don't know how much I want to see the rest of the Philippines. Growing up I've seen only southern Bulacan, Northern NCR...farthest I've been was Pampanga a couple of times. We couldn't really afford a lot of outings growing up. I remember my dad, grandpops, and their friends use to bike from Malabon up to Norzagaray.

That's near the Rice Terraces right? Man I'm excited. I want to do it when I have time.

    Hi!

Sinong sasali sa Adidas King of the Road next week. This will be my 3rd time joining a run, kaso lang na confuse ako sa map.

From The Fort hanggang Mapua Makati yung run? That means lalabas kami ng The Fort, di ba usually umiikot lang sa isang place yung mga 5K-10K runs? So paano yun? Di ba ako maligaw dun or paano kung di ko na kaya (just in case) na bumalik sa pinanggalingan ko?

    Please advise.

^most races I know have route markers and volunteers. If not maybe call the organizers or come in early so that they can explain before the race.

    FA_SOLDIER-
speaking of air shows, i vaguely recall watching the Army send a bunch of paratroopers that also participate in air shows, cant recall their name (fort Dix was just a few mins away from my old base).

The Golden Knights...they're the ones who jump with the older Bush.

yeah the army don't have 'airshows' lol, we have precision helicopters demos. but although we don't mess with fixed wings too much, when it comes to the "birds", jumping, flying, loading, destroying, rappelling, from and to a helicopter, we're still the best.

i heard it's good. i think it's like gatorade, electros, but it doesn't fill you up to make you vomit. i mean we've all done that right? drank too much and had to **** it out after a hard work out.

to pat, haha. we all have our own. I mean if you ask a Marine who's the best...lol.

^WOW! I've heard people collapse in marathons, the full marathon, and in half marathons, esp. on bad weather, but this is either something wrong or just a bad coincidence.

  19. #39
well coz marathons are for seasoned runners and not for day joggers so if you are a bambi? don't dare!!!

  20. #40
I believe that if a person does not have any medical condition and is reasonably fit, and acclimatized to the weather, and keeps sufficiently hydrated, then i dont think there should be any real problems.

I have had lots of experience doing relatively long as well as intermittent high intensity training under the 12 noon sun, as well as indoors, and never had any major problems (well, not major-major ones, suffered heat exhaustion a few times in my sports life). I never took electrolyte drinks either (couldnt afford it back then).

Of course i was very attuned to my body, something you develop over years of doing the right AND wrong things. This goes without saying of course that my fitness level was about as high as my genetics would allow for the period of time i was training anyway.

Anyway, when in doubt, DONT RISK IT!!!

Better to "loose" now and live to fight another day, rather than be DEAD and never getting a chance!!!
