    Maleficent (2014) starring Angelina Jolie

    Maleficent

This is a retelling of the tale of Sleeping Beauty, only we're seeing this in the point of view of Maleficent herself (as played by Jolie)

I think I like this even if I would have to wait really long before it happens

Angelina Jolie's Maleficent Adds A Prince
    3 Comments published: 2012-05-31 09:36:58 Author: Sean O'Connell

What good is a fairy-tale princess story without a Prince Charming? Even Kristen Stewart’s action-charged Snow White needs a Huntsman to lure in the young male demographic. So Disney has wisely added a prince to its pending Maleficent, a fantasy thriller that already has Angelina Jolie in the title role.

Deadline says that the coveted prince part has gone to Brenton Thwaites, a relative newcomer from Australia who has a few television series to his credit including Sea Patrol, Home and Away and the recent TV movie version of Blue Lagoon that aired on the Lifetime Network. Needless to say, this is a major break for Thwaites, who’ll star alongside Jolie in a story centered around the evil queen from the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.

Earlier, we confirmed that Disney had landed Elle Fanning (Super 8, We Bought a Zoo) to the production as Princess Aurora, meaning Maleficent is shaping up tp have a pretty impressive cast. In the same story, we noted that several impressive actors had landed roles in the production, including Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Juno Temple, Sharlto Copley, Miranda Richardson, Sam Riley and Kenneth Cranham, playing the human king aiming to conquer the fairy kingdom.

Now we just have to see if Robert Stromberg can deliver as a director. Up to this point, the two-time Oscar winner largely has served as a set director and production designer on such Disney films as Alice in Wonderland and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The live-action Maleficent marks his directorial debut, but so far, his casting decision have been inspired. We hope the rest of the production follows suit. We’ll see when Maleficent reaches theaters in 2014.

Elle Fanning Confirmed For Maleficent, Large Supporting Cast Added
4 Comments published: 2012-05-08 10:01:46 Author: Katey Rich

The Angelina Jolie-starring Maleficent, which tells the story of Sleeping Beauty with a focus on the wicked queen, is gearing up for production in advance of its March 14, 2014 release, but casting has been remarkably slow. Last week Sharlto Copley entered talks to play the King, and there had been rumors that Elle Fanning might play the sleeping Princess Aurora, but that was pretty much it.

Now, in what looks like a big burst of activity, a huge portion of the cast has been filled out. THR reports that a ton of British actors are joining the proaction, including Imelda Staunton and Lesley Manville as pixies who take care of Princess Aurora, Miranda Richardson as the fairy Queen Ulla who is also Maleficent's aunt, Sam Riley as Maleficent's right-hand man who can transform into a raven, and Kenneth Cranham as the human king aiming to conquer the fairy kingdom. The report also confirms that Fanning will indeed play Aurora, and clarifies that Copley won't be playing a human king, but a half-human, half-fairy ******* son of the king.

That's a whole lot of talent for one movie, and Maleficent could probably use it-- the director is Robert Stromberg, who had worked as a production designer on films like Alice in Wonderland and Avatar before making his directorial debut here. Obviously with Jolie in the lead role the movie will be a force to be reckoned with, but having so many skilled actors-- particularly Mike Leigh veterans Staunton and Maville-- in the supporting roles can only boost its cred.

Now that we have Elle Fanning confirmed as Aurora, are you ready to see her go toe to toe with Jolie? Or do you suspect as I do that, no matter how talented the younger Fanning sister is, she'll be demolished by a screen presence by Jolie? It might not be a fair matchup, but it's one I'm eager to see regardless.

Dolores Umbridge and Rita Skeeter! Also, Elle Fanning is one of the most talented (and among the prettiest also) young actresses today so this could be good. This is still Angelina's movie though.

Angelina Jolie's 'Maleficient' gets release date
    Comments
    By Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY

Evil has a release date. Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as Disney's ultimate villain, is set to be released in theaters March 14, 2014.

The live-action film explores the story of the evil fairy, appropriately named Maleficent, and her role in the curse of Sleeping Beauty. Let's just say she can put people to sleep in a very bad way.

The film will be directed by Robert Stromberg, the two-time Academy Award-winning production designer behind Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.

Jolie has expressed glee about taking on the baddie role when filming begins in June. But she hopes that people see the tale as a complex character portrait.

"I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other (warmer) qualities," she told EW. "You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is."
