Medical board topnotcher wanted to be a computer w
By Sheila Crisostomo Publish Date: [Friday, August 24, 2001] Information technology’s loss is medicine’s gain. Thadeo "Ted" Catacutan, 26, never dreamed of becoming a doctor. This year’s topnotcher in the medical board was hooked on computers when he was in his teens. "I had my first personal computer when I graduated from elementary school. It was given to me as a gift by my parents because they realized that I was so fond of computers," Ted says. Ted admits that he had set his mind on taking up computer science in college, but was advised by his science teacher Larne Gayatgay to consider science courses upon his graduation from high school at the Don Bosco Technical Institute. "She asked me to take up science instead. Perhaps she thought I was good in it," says Ted. "I knew that medicine is also a good profession so I gave it a try. It is a decision I would never regret." Ted bagged the top place in the Physician Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission, with a rating of 87.92 percent. "I never expected that. Maybe I am above average in science but I am not exemplary," recalls Ted. "Before the board exam I just told myself that I have to do my best. I aimed for the best." Ted is the youngest and the only male in a brood of three. His parents are retired Navy Capt. Rodolfo Catacutan and school guidance counselor Rebecca Garcia. "There was also a time I thought of going to military school but my father discouraged me. He said there are better opportunities in other professions," he said. The new doctor was described by his mom as "a good son." "He never gave us a headache. He also has a good choice of friends ... During school days, all he did was study. But during semestral break, he would do all the household chores. He is a good cook," the mother proudly reveals. For his pre-medicine course, Ted took up Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Santo Tomas where he was a full scholar. He participated and won in various science competitions and later graduated summa cum laude. Last year, Ted graduated magna cum laude with a degree in medicine also at UST. But the young doctor admitted his interest in information technology has not waned. "At present, I am studying computer animation on my own. I could use it, maybe when I make presentations during conferences. Computers and medicine are somehow related to each other," explains Ted. With his achievements, Ted may find his hands full of job offers but he is in no hurry. "I am planning to take up residency training in internal medicine in the United States, probably with my girlfriend," reveals Ted, in reference to Jennifer Uy who also passed this year’s board exams for physicians. The two have been engaged for seven years but have no plans yet to get married. "We’ll come to that .... As of now, what I want is to be able to study in the US. After that, I will go back to the Philippines to work in a hospital here. I will be back," Ted says. Back | Search Again | Printable Version FROM THE PHIL-STAR! AUG 24,2001 |

since binuksan mo na rin yung topic...during the oath taking ng kuya ko for the med board passers about 3 years ago, where an alumnus of UP topped the board, all of the UP grads were acting like gods and goddesses, my kuya nga told me that they're looking at the UST graduates 'mula ulo hanggang paa' because the top 1 was their's...but when the school's performance in terms of passing rates was announced, the Thomasian crowd became the center of attraction. though UP got a 98% passing rate compared to UST's 96%, the commisioner told that topping the board or having a 100% passing rate is not a gauge for the school's quality...true. for example...UP's 98% during that time is seemingly a big feat, but when you try to see their number of examinees compared to the number of passer's, the 98% is kinda tricky...imagine, UP's examinees are only less than 50 while UST sent a full force of it's new grads into the exams...about more than 300 with 2 or three deficient/uneligible takers, wala ni isang bagsak. now that what made UP grad's quiet during that time. in anyway, UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery is the best in the country...no need to elaborate. need i say more...? Congrats to ate jingbee and kuya Jay!!! sana pumasa ako sa entrance ko....!!! |

It's a shame how you people start attacking non-UST people here without basis. I answered someone's question about how many UST are in the top 10 based on facts. I don't understand how that can be miscontrued as UST bashing. Ganoon ba kayo ka-insecure na sinasagot lang ang tanong, naiinsulto na kayo? Am I happy that PGH did well? You bet I am. My boyfriend is from PGH and is one of the August 2001 passers. Bilib ako sa school na yon, dahil I believe that they produce the best doctors. Their performance rates in the boards easily show that. Pero guess what, masaya rin ako na mga kaibigan ko from UST pumasa. Am I from PGH? No, I'm not. I'm from UERM and I'm taking my boards next year. Ang problema sa inyo, any comment lang professing admiration for another school, iniisip niyong insulto na sa inyo eh. Di ako taga-PGH, pero natatanggap ko na magaling sila at bumibilib ako sa kanila. Grow up! Di ganyan klaseng tao ang mga ka-rotate kong mga taga UST sa San Lazaro, kaya mahiya naman kayo sa kanila.
By the way, that argument about not being able to compare the student population because PGH graduated less than 50 and UST graduated more than 300 is invalid. PGH graduates 120 students a year. Kaya kailangan naka-percentage ang passing rate, dahil hindi mo pwedeng i-compare ang # of passers in 120 sa 300. It's basic mathematics. Putting it in percentile makes two numbers comparable. Napaka sensitive niyo sobra. |

no its not that we're being too sensitive..some of us maybe..but definitely not the majority..kaya kami bina bash? or is talagang hilig lang nila yon & most of us are just ignoring them para lang maging masaya sila..anyways we know better.. & sometimes its in the manner of our posts kung flame starter nga siya or whatever.... ih to jerrico & ivy! |

Why does UST keep on saying that they are the best? why are they so insecure with UP-PGH products??? insecurity, perhaps? act like adults please. i guess you people don't have to prove yourselves here.
