MANILA, Philippines - Wondering which university to apply in? PhilStar.com compiled a list of higher educational institutions all over the country to see which universities made it to the list of schools that offer the best tertiary education.

Data have been sourced from the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) list of higher educational institutions which are considered centers of excellence and development. These schools "have demonstrated the highest degree or level of standard along the areas of instruction, research and extension," according to the commission.

CHED added that these schools "provide institutional leadership in all aspects of development in specific areas of discipline in the various regions by providing networking arrangements to help ensure the accelerated development of higher educational institutions in their respective service areas."

Latest data available was dated October 4, 2010, the last time the commission awarded these titles to higher educational institutions all over the country.

And the nine best universities are:
1.) UP Diliman
2.) UP Los Banos
3.) De La Salle University
4.) Ateneo De Manila University
5.) University of Santo Tomas
6.) Central Luzon State University
7.) Mindanao State University - IIT
8.) Central Mindanao University
9.) University of the Cordilleras

Number of CODs/COEs and basehan, so if you have less CODs/COEs, which is a good way of gauging an educational institution's excellence, then you will certainly rank lower here.

UP Los Banos? I highly doubt this, baka UP Manila pwede pa, but then again, the BS Public Health of UPM course is dragging them down (look na lang kayo sa statistics ng prc, epic fail ang curse este course na ito)!

UP los banos deserves the spot. but then i still claim the inaccuracy of the study. blames to either Philstar or Ched. that why so happened UP manila isn't included?

UPLB deserves the spot. They are really active in research due to the Univ's active involvement and connection with international orgs like IRRI and so on. At saka malakas ang ENG at Agri dept ng LB.

among mindanao schools, i think MSU-IIT with most nos. of COEs/CODs, followed by XU, MSU-Main and ADDU.

not sure about CMU.

about Univ of Cordilleras? i think, having bar topnotcher lang yata best recognition nila.

i beg to disagree. the PRC is not a good indicator of bsph's performance. though they can take the med tech boards their curriculum is not that inclined for the licensure exam as compared to institutional med tech programs. and you have to give their curriculum credits as a good premed course with inclusions of most vital subjects in med school. i have known a lot of bsph grad who are doing good in med school and so i can't agree to your claims.

Hi, I was the one who collated the data for this compilation. As mentioned in the article, we based the ranking solely on the number of centers of excellence (COE) and development (COD) per university as recognized by CHED (as of 2010, when they last awarded these distinctions). That is why even if UP Manila is a top university, it only has two centers of excellence- Medicine and Nursing- so it didn't make the cut.
