    Mad Max: Fury Road

Starring: Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough

    Director: George Miller

The fourth film in the Mad Max franchise with Tom Hardy taking on the role of Max Rockatansky, a hardened ex-cop in a future beset by gas shortages and marauding gangs. The role was made iconic by Mel Gibson in the original films.

This fourth film is said to the take place a short while after the story detailed after 1985's Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which keeps Mad Max relatively young. This time around the story centers on Max (Hardy) and the "Five Wives," a group of women Max must protect from the bad guys.

Mad Max (directed by George Miller, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron)

Tom Hardy Is the New Max Rockatansky in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD; Charlize Theron to Co-Star
    by Matt Goldberg Posted:October 29th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

It turns out the rumor last week that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy may star in George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” turned out to be true. Hardy will play “Mad” Max Rockatansky, the role made popular by Mel Gibson in Miller’s 1979 post-apocalyptic action-flick, “Mad Max”. Hardy is getting big name recognition for his performance in “Bronson” and he’ll next be seen in Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated film, “Inception”. As for Charlize Theron, she’s Charlize Theron and since she’s both attractive and can act, she doesn’t have a tough time getting offered roles. Grab all the gasoline you can and hit the jump for more details.

According to Heat Vision Blog, Theron will play the female lead opposite Hardy. However, the script is tightly under wraps and there’s no word on whose costume will have more studs and spikes. HVB also reports that they’re aiming to start shooting in summer 2010 which coincides with last week’s report concerning the details of when filming would begin. However, HVB’s story about Hardy and Theron’s casting makes no mention of the $100 million+ budget nor does it say anything about the plan to shoot for 30 weeks. However, I would not be surprised if those details also turn out to be true.

While I have a very tough time envisioning someone as pretty as Theron (that Alieen Wuornos make-up only works once) wandering around an apocalyptic wasteland, it looks like Miller’s planning to resurrect the character with his biggest action adventure yet. It is not known if interesting the film will extend beyond a sigh of relief that Mel Gibson is not returning.

Tom Hardy Says MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Starts Filming April 2012
    by Adam Chitwood Posted:August 19th, 2011 at 4:44 pm

George Miller’s Mad Max follow-up Fury Road has had a bit of a storied history. The film was originally set to start production in August 2010 with stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, but after massive sets had been built and intense pre-production work was underway, torrential rains flooded the Australian desert that was set to be the film’s backdrop for the duration of the shoot.

Flash forward to this past March, when Miller gave an update on the project saying that they would restart pre-production later this year and commence filming early next year, with the film fully funded and ready to go. Now we have a solid start date, as Hardy revealed to Steve at today’s Warrior press day that the film will begin production next April. He said:
“we’re going to have to find somewhere else to shoot it, but it looks like it’s going in April.”
Hit the jump for more on Mad Max: Fury Road.

While Hardy wasn’t exactly a huge star when he was first cast in Fury Road, it’s safe to say that he’s going to be a ginormous draw for audiences when the film eventually hits theaters. Warrior is picking up some great buzz, and he’s currently filming his role as Bane in Christopher Nolan’s indie drama The Dark Knight Rises.

On the Fury Road front, all seems to be going according to plan. Miller went ahead and made Happy Feet Two following the delay in production, and last we heard Theron was still attached to the project. Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) and Riley Kileough, who was just cast in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, were also said to be starring in the film, but their current status is unknown at this point.

Fury Road will be a relaunch of the Mad Max franchise that rocketed Mel Gibson to stardom in 1979. The story takes place in a dystopian future, and Miller has been hard at work designing new vehicles and such for the update.

    Mad Max 4: Fury Road

Charlize Theron Talks ‘Mad Max 4: Fury Road’

Charlize Theron is no stranger to characters who dwell in grand and fantastical worlds. She will bring her bloody reign in theaters this weekend as the Evil Queen in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman and is hard at work in London prepping for the premiere of Ridley Scott’s epic return to sci-fi Prometheus where she plays (possibly) nefarious company woman Meredith Vickers.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Theron in a roundtable discussion at the London press event for the film and were able to gather a few tidbits about her upcoming re-imagining (rather than a sequel or prequel as some have assumed) of Mad Max with Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) as the titular character. The film marks the return of the franchise, after a 27-year absence, which has suffered a series of fits and starts as it made its way into active production.

Theron: Mad Max won't be a sequel
    (UKPA) – 3 days ago
Charlize Theron has revealed that Mad Max 4: Fury Road will not be a prequel or sequel to the previous films.
The Oscar-winning South African actress is set to star alongside Tom Hardy as Mad Max in the fourth instalment, which comes 27 years since the last movie, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
"Like with Snow White And The Huntsman, there is so much potential to re-imagine that world. It's such an interesting world and how much it still resonates today after 20 years or whatever it's been. We're going back to that world but this is not a prequel or sequel or anything like that," she said.
Charlize - who stars as evil queen Ravenna in Snow White And The Huntsman - is excited to see what Tom has up his sleeve for his upcoming performance, which sees him stepping into Mel Gibson's shoes.
"Tom Hardy will be playing Mad Max but this is not the Mad Max that we know from that [film]. Only Tom Hardy can do this Mad Max and my character is a brand new character as well," she added.
The 36-year-old also revealed that being a mother to son Jackson, who she announced she adopted in March, is her number one priority from now on.
"I'm sure later on, when he has to go to school and so on, it will definitely [affect me]," she said.
"I'm in the wonderful stage right now where he can go with me anywhere and he loves it. I'll just have to wait and see but there's no doubt in my mind that he will always be my priority for sure," she added.

Theron Says Mad Max Shoots Next Month
Are we finally taking the Fury Road?

01 June 2012 | Written by Owen Williams | Source: Shock Till You Drop

When we spoke to Tom Hardy at Cannes a couple of weeks ago, he claimed not to know anything about when George Miller's long-awaited and much-beleaguered fourth Mad Max film would finally start shooting. "Who knows?" he said. "It's cool to be elusive with dates." Either that has changed very quickly, or he was being deliberately sneaky, since Charlize Theron has just told Shock that she leaves for Nambia in three weeks, and shooting on Fury Road is set for mid-July.

"I'm very excited about it; I'm ****ing dying!" enthuses Theron. "It's been three years; its time to skin this cat already!"

For those who've not been following the story, Mad Max: Fury Road was all set to go in its usual Broken Hill locations in Australia some time ago until extraordinary rains and floods turned the desert into a verdant flower garden; not quite the blasted wasteland the production was counting on.

"It was a huge problem," says Theron now. "The desert never recovered. Well, it did recover in a beautiful way, just not the way we needed!" The huge number of vehicles that had already been built for the film ended up parked, unused, for more than a year, until the relocation to Africa.

We still don't know much about Theron's role in the film. She might be called Furiosa, and she might have part of one arm missing, but none of that's officially confirmed intel. She's been described as "the main chick", but whether that means an Auntie Entity-type antagonist or some sort of ally for Hardy's Max remains to be seen. But the character is, says Theron, nothing like anything she's ever read. "I'm scared shitless," she confides. "It's a really challenging piece of material. It's not the original Mad Max, it's the revamped Mad Max. The whole thing is just very, very exciting."

Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Adelaide Clemens and Zoe Kravitz were all also in the cast, last we heard. George Miller is directing as always, and his producing partner Doug Mitchell has intimated that a whole new trilogy is afoot. They'll need to finally get the first one in the can before any more can happen though. We'll keep you posted on whether that actually starts happening next month.

"‘Transformers’ Star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Cast In ‘Mad Max: Road Fury’"

    ^^Gosh Tom Hardy

Rosie Huntington-Whitely Added To Mad Max: Fury Road
Transformers 3 star will play one of the "five wives".
With Mad Max: Fury Road set to start filming soon, the cast has been filling out further. In addition to the impressive castings of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, THR reports that the post-apocalyptic reboot has added Transformers: Dark of the Moon actress/model Rose Huntington-Whiteley.

Huntington-Whiteley drew some pretty derisive comments for her performance in the third entry in the Transformers franchise – some of which seemed a little bloodthirsty when you consider that she had ZERO prior acting experience, and had no place headlining a multi-million dollar blockbuster. That said, she was pretty poor, but then throw in the fact that the script for Transformers 3 didn’t exactly give her the new Ellen Ripley to have a run at, and it is little surprise that she has dropped off the acting radar since that film.

For Mad Max, Huntington-Whiteley is set to play one of the “five wives”, characters that we’ve not really been introduced to yet, other than the news that three of the other four will be played by Zoe Kravitx, Riley Keough and Adelaide Clemens. Without wanting to sound too patronising, a smaller role would seem ideal, after flailing so desperately in the deep end on her debut, and we are kind of pulling for Huntingdon-Whiteley to quieten down a few snarky haters.

Tom Hardy: Mad Max Fury Road Shoots In 2012
Flood-hit project set to be revived

Collider have revealed the exciting news that Mad Max: Fury Road is set to be filmed in spring 2012.

Speaking to Collider, Hardy tells them that the project, on which filming was halted at a late stage when the sets in Australia were flooded, will be revived in around April. George Miller is set to continue directing the series, and it seems that Charlize Theron is still attached to the fourth installment in the trilogy.

Although we are as a rule fairly down on the string of remakes and reboots that come pouring out of Hollywood these days, this is one which we have a good feeling about. If these personnel all remain involved in the production, with George Miller himself still presiding over his brainchild, the Mad Max universe could easily fit a modern production, with all the bells and whistles that come with it. Watch this space for more news as we get it.

    Namibia Times (article translation)

According to the Namib Times, Mad Max 4 production has started and Tom and Charlize are in Namibia.
“News that Charlize Theron landed in Namibia yesterday morning spread like wildfire through the departure lounge of the airport Rooikop, pulling people to gather along the fence for a glimpse of the popular Hollywood star.”
“The man starring in the film, Tom Hardy, has already arrived in Swakopmund, and has apparently been seen regularly between his hotel and the production offices of the movie in the old Municipal building.” link

Mad Max: Fury Road Set Photos Prove It's In Production

It seems that Charlize Theron wasn't lying when she said George Miller's long delayed fourth Mad Max movie would start shooting sometime this summer. In anticipation for Mad Max: Fury Road, the project that caused her to bow out of the Elizabeth Shaw role in Prometheus, Theron has recently been spotted sporting a rather short hairdo, but that's still not the real proof that Miller's return to the dystopian landscape has actually started rolling. These set photos provide the pudding.

After being cast in the project primarily to look pretty in a cage (no wonder Teresa Palmer backed out), Australian supermodel Alley Lee (Kershaw) recently uploaded a few behind-the-scenes images as a tumblr post with the caption "Abbey Lee pictured in costume on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road currently filming in Namibia." Here are two images from the set (via Collider) and head over to our sister site Giant Freakin Robot for more.

The first photo shows what seems to be the lovely Abbey Lee in one of Mad Max' signature suped-up automobiles accompanied by a few of her equally lovely cast mates. Seriously, Fury Road is full of beautiful people with a cast that includes Lee, Theron, Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Zoe Kravitz and Adelaide Clemens. And it looks like it could be any (or all) of her female co-stars sitting with Lee.

The second image is a beautiful wide-shot that shows off never ending horizon of the Namibian location. It also gives a much clearer picture of what is going on in the previous shot, with the girls' muscle car being hitched to, or more likely harassed by, what looks like a giant steamroller. The road does seem furious. Even with a cup of cocoa (or whatever it is that Lee is sipping). What do you think? About the pics, not what she's sipping.

Mad Max: Fury Road will be a re-imagining of, not sequel or a prequel to, George Miller's own 1979 cult classic with Hardy taking over the titular role made famous by Mel Gibson. I find it fascinating when filmmakers remake their own work (Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much or Haneke's Funny Games to name a few), so I'm looking forward to see what Miller does with his old material, especially since it has been over 30 years since his first film with Max.
